Heart & Heritage: Volunteer in Ghana, West Africa

I've volunteered through other programs and this is probably one of the best. I was originally set to volunteer as a Health Outreach and Education Worker in April, but my plans were delayed because of COVID-19. Thankfully, I was able to go as soon as Ghana re-opened, and I'm so glad that I did. I was the only volunteer because of the current situation, but I don't regret a minute of it. Edward, the Founder of Volunteer Corps, IVHQ's in country partner, as well as the rest of the team, made sure that I was taken care of and followed safety measures due to COVID-19. There was no reason for me to fear or be nervous. I was already in country and Benedict, a Program Manager, made sure that my transportation to the volunteer house in Accra was in place. When I arrived at the volunteer house, I was warmly greeted by the team there. The next day, I had orientation (language, customs, health outreach/education program overview, discussion about excursions) and commuted with the Purple Program team to the Eastern Region, about 3 hours away from Accra, and stayed in the village of Frankadua which was the central location to the villages where work took place. The volunteer house was clean and I felt safe because of the security guard. The food was great and Mary, the chef, can make food based on your diet. The team went above and beyond to make sure that I was taken care of. When I arrived, I was even greeted by respected community members The night before volunteering, Joe, the Purple Team Manager, led the team meeting where we discussed more details about the work that I would be doing. Because I was the only volunteer due to COVID, I was asked to do blood pressure screenings (I brought my own monitor), teach on health topics based on my knowledge, conduct malaria tests, and provide first aid (I do have American Red Cross First Aid training, but it is not a must if you are not comfortable). The malaria tests are easy to perform especially if you already have lab experience. It is advisable to bring at least 3 - 4 boxes of your own gloves. So many people would show up (at least 75 per village) to learn and receive testing and care that the staff stepped up to assist in reading malaria test results, educate about malaria treatment, conduct blood pressure screenings, and assist with the flow of the day. They constantly made sure that I had everything I needed, inquired if I needed to take a break, and made sure that my overall health and wellbeing were taken care of. During my time in the Eastern Region, I was able to provide health outreach in different villages near the volunteer house in Frankadua. The other villages are about a 20 minute ride from the volunteer house. The team is organized, worked well together, and made me feel like family. There's so much that a volunteer can do. Overall, I was also able to teach about hygiene at a secondary school, teach a community about COVID-19, conduct over 200 malaria tests where treatment was provided (the tests and medication are covered in the program fee), conduct blood pressure screenings and education, and provide first aid care to people who aren't able to access a clinic. Safety measures were taken because of COVID-19 like wearing face masks, using hand sanitizer, and sanitizing equipment (tables, chairs, etc.). The need for volunteers is great and there's so much work to do. I will return again.

My experience traveling through IVHQ was something I will never forget. I was blown away right from the beginning by the support from all the staff. My phone was stolen during the beginning of my trip and Evans immediately guided me to get a police report and new phone. If anything ever goes wrong on your trip, you will surely be assisted. Evans is especially helpful and comforting to all volunteers when any problem arises. The programs are very flexible so if you decide you want to change, it will be very easy for you to do so. The people in Ghana are so welcoming and kind. There are also trips that they organize for the volunteers to experience things such as cape coast, the monkey sanctuary, waterfalls, and more. It is an overall wonderful experience of helping others and exploring the world!

This was my first international volunteering assignment. IVHQ and Volunteer Corp people did a great job in making this trip memorable. Evans in particular was very helpful and supportive through out..

I spent two weeks in Frankadua, Volta Region, Ghana. Everything, from accommodation, food, safety was really good. Evans Nkansah, project coordinator in Turquoise did a great job organizing weekend trips where everybody could enjoy free time without any worries about food drinks or something else. Planning done well. And he made Malaria testings possible for which I can't thank him enough, great experience for me. Overall, I am really happy with my experience and I suggest everyone to try something like this.

Before arrival the online team were helpful and made me feel at ease that my trip would be as smooth as possible, and once I arrived I was made to feel comfortable in the volunteer accommodation. The day before starting our volunteering we had orientation. It thoroughly covered what everyone would be doing and included a language lesson. The accommodation at my program was comfortable, clean, the food was delicious and in a really beautiful location. There was plenty on offer and we ended up doing quite a few malaria outreaches (where we go to schools and test children for malaria and give out medication to those with it) which was arranged and overlooked by Evans. He ensured that everyone was ready for it and knew what to do. He did a wonderful job and made the experience really enjoyable while giving us the chance to learn new skills. He was also the person that came with us on trips, along with Elvis. Both made the experience better- as they engaged with us as friends while also ensuring our safety and well-being- and had arranged trips that were interesting and fun. Not once throughout my whole experience did I feel unsafe or unsupported. There are so many amazing opportunities that are offered with flexibility and everyone’s best intentions at the root of it. I would highly recommend it.

When we arrived, we were met at the airport by a staff member from IVHQ brought to the volunteer house. The next morning orientation, Evans our coordinator took us through each program explained where it was the staff at each location and what we could expect. Throughout our stay Elvis as Evans arranged weekend trips and made us feel very safe. The women were escorted at all times by a staff member, there seemed to be little actual safety risk except the occasional proposal. During my stay in Frankadua, I lost my phone. The last time I saw it was in a cab several village's away. I had given it up as lost, all my information, photos etc. When I told Evans, he volunteered to go look for it. With only the size of the taxi and location we were dropped off, before catching a Trotro, He took a motor bike and actually found my phone in the cab and returned it too me. He organized several school outreach for Malaria testing. Our last day there he arranged for Marco and myself to go to the HIV clinic in Accra, as I had brought medications to donate, and they could not be used in Frankadua. The staff at IVHQ was phenomenal they took amazing care of all of us and ensured not only our safety but our experience in Ghana was amazing. I would like to personally thank Evans for going above and beyond too help not only myself but others who were struggling to ensure our time in Ghana was a rewarding. Teresa

Wonderful experience! Evans was super helpful and friendly— the best!! Really enjoyed getting to know the kids and experiencing a new way of life. The weekend trips were a great chance to see different parts of the country and interact with fellow volunteers. Highly recommend:)

When first landing, I was scared. This was my first time travelling and I was doing it alone, I had certainly gone all out for my first time. However, when the team picked me up I was soon completely at ease. In fact by the end of the first day I felt like I was home. My stay was amazing here. The accommodation was nice and shopping was done twice a week and volunteers could do up a list to plan meals. The Dog shelter that I was working was well maintained and there was always someone there if you needed help or didn't know what to do next. The night after returning home, I found myself missing this place. I wanted to go back and stay longer. I highly recommend this place for new and old volunteers as it bow holds some of the best moments in my life.

I spent a week in Ghana on the Pink Childcare Program. My life had taken on new meaning! Thank you IVHQ for providing this platform for us to make a difference, where it's much needed.I'll be back again!

I have just returned from a 6 week trip to Ghana teaching which was fantastic. I loved getting to know both my school kids and the local children as well as the locals. Evans was our ‘go to’ guy if we ever needed help. This could have been whilst we were at the placement or preparing a weekend trip or any other reason you may need help, support or advise. For example; I went for a weekend to Mole National Park and without Evans it would have been nearly impossible and far more expensive. He was always there and I always felt I could rely on him for anything I needed. My overall experience in Ghana on the purple program was fantastic thanks to the people and the support from Evans I felt safe and supported the entire time!

I spent 3 months on the purple teaching program. Really got to know my students and the locals that lived in my town, Frankadua. Evans couldn't be a better volunteer co-ordinator. Anything you want to do in the country, just let Evans know and he'll make some calls and find you deals you would never have been able to get yourself. He'll call the volunteers every often if he doesn't get a chance to visit the program for a week or so and he'll always want everyone to pass off the phone to the next volunteer so he can make sure everyone is doing well and enjoying themselves. He's a really nice guy and the volunteers being happy is his number one concern. Everyone loves him and it's always a great time when he's around. If he wasn't working in Ghana for IVHQ during my stay, my whole experience would have been different. I'm really thankful for his dedication and hard work.

I spent two weeks at the Olive Program,I could only commit to two weeks but I can honestly say that it was a truly humbling and incredible experience.I was made to feel so welcome and at weekends we joined other volunteers to go to excursions which were truly Amazing.Our guide Evans was really lovely and ensured that we all felt safe and made the most of our experience.Only thing I regret is that I couldn't stay longer.

Four months in Ghana has flown by! And it has been a blast! So many good times, with so many nice people. Whether it is the other volunteers or the locals, you will soon find yourself having a new family, built up of people that once used to be strangers. You will meet people that are way different from you, and realize how much you can learn from them. You will be in crazy, weird and surreal situations that will take you far outside your comfort zone. But use these to learn about yourself, and grow as a person. Try to experience as much as possible. Don’t hold back. Because hey, you are in Africa! Going with IVHQ has been a very good experience! I always felt safe, and cared for. The food was of high quality. The accommodation was absolutely fantastic. The staff was nice, welcoming and helpful. All in all, I’m very happy with my stay in Ghana! And I’m sure you will be aswell!

I had an amazing time in Ghana, it made me think a lot differently than I have before in my life. I got to see a whole different side of the world that I would never have though I would see. The people are very nice for the most part, the only thing I wish I would have done is split my volunteering time between two countries.

I am so glad I to went through IVHQ Ghana to volunteer. It was an amazing experience. All the staff, especially Evans, were very helpful. The staff and the locals made me feel so welcome. The four weeks went by so fast. If you're looking for a country to volunteer at, I would recommend Ghana.

When you embark for the first time on an international experience, you will certainly feel a wide range of emotions, from fear to enthusiasm. Well, do not be scared or hesitate on enrolling for a Volunteer Program in Ghana and here is why: First, from the moment I got out of my plane, I felt always welcomed by the community and I must say that throughout my time there the staff and locals always helped me out when needed. Second, there is no better way to know a country and its people than having the opportunity to spend time with them and live as they do. In Ghana, I guess I can say that everyone likes to talk and get to know new people and volunteers. Both kids and adults, you will love to have a word with you and show you around, show you how things are done there. As such, you will surely learn a lot with them! Third, there´s no better way to live life than with a smile in your face! The tough conditions they live in might stun you, but their charisma, personality, energy, smile will certainly astonish you, because that is the way lie should be lived. That´s the way they live it, by being 100% alive! Now I would like to introduce to you my experience more in details as well as give you some tips in case you are really considering going to Ghana. I´ve spent a simple month (4weeks) on the Purple Program that is running in the Frankadua and I must say that if it was today and if I could I would have enrolled for certainly more time. I was on the Sports Teaching Program, but I ended up doing several other things like marking exams, helping local teachers, teaching in the mornings during summer break and giving training/practice to the FC Bright Star team for 2hours every weekday. So it is up to you to just do what you have enrolled for or participate in as many things as you can. In case you are unsure about what supplies you should bring, I would suggest you bringing notebooks, pencils, pens, erasers and some reading and coloring books (Teaching); footballs (soccer balls for the Americans), football boots (Sports Teaching); and then medical supplies such as bandages, oxygen peroxide, and other first aid supplies are always needed. There´s more to do and to know in Ghana, so in case you are wondering IVHQ staff organizes weekend trips – Cape Coast, Wli Waterfalls, etc. - and you could also arrange them independently with other volunteers as I did when I went to Ada Foah. I have enjoyed every single moment while in Ghana and words cannot describe the experience that I had that without a doubt changed by life. I would like to thank IVHQ for such an opportunity!

I just came back from a week long volunteer adventure with the medical program at IVHQ. I was in the village of Senya, about 3 hours outside Accra. I cannot say enough good things about this program. I had never traveled overseas before, and this was also my first time volunteering. I was alone and a little nervous about it, but IVHQ was so wonderful. The entire staff was so helpful and guided me along the way in preparing me before I left. Once I was in Ghana the local team took over and made sure I was well taken care of. I was always very safe and provided for. The staff checked in on the volunteers everyday, many times more than once a day, to make sure we were ok and to help us with whatever we needed. The volunteer house was clean and the meals were good. The clinic that I volunteered with was very welcoming with the volunteers and were very patient with us. They seemed to be happy that we were there and I felt like I was really helping them. Everything about my trip ran so smoothly and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I would recommend the IVHQ program to anyone who was thinking about taking this kind of adventure!

What made my trip to Ghana so incredible was the help and support from the volunteer coordinators, particularly Evans. He was more than available to us at any time. He was really concerned with our safety, and he wanted all of us to have a good experience. He went above and beyond with all of us, even though the programs were spread out all across the country. I knew that Evans would be available to talk to me at any time if I had any questions, issues, or needed advice. In addition, he planned a very memorable trip to Accra that allowed all of the volunteers to learn more about the country, while also bringing us together as a group. Evans did a great job of making everyone's trip amazing, and I highly recommend going to Ghana because of him.

Disclaimer: This is not for anyone. I found that most volunteers who enjoyed themselves the most and who got the most out of volunteering abroad are open-minded individuals who can adjust quickly to a completely different environment than whatever they have known. This will be a challenge but those who are up for the experience will not doubt grow as a person. I am writing about my experience in Ghana of February 2017. I went there to do Agriculture. Keep in mind, when you travel to a third world country, the best thing to arrive with is no expectations as I did. I had really little to no clue what I was getting myself into other than doing agriculture in a place I had yet to discover. When I arrived I was warmly welcomed by the IVHQ Ghana program. While the conditions of my living were not as expected, I had fellow volunteers to help me adjust and my favorite coordinator called Evans, who was a local and part of IVHQ. We spent a day in Acra and then went to our placements in a van where we are individually dropped off or with a small group. As the days continued it took me a week in total to really adjust to the culture, people, and climate. While it was an immensely different environment, I was happy and comfortable because I was looking for a very different way of life. I had all the support I could need from Evans who I had direct contact with as well as my fellow volunteers who were from all over the world. All in all, I loved my trip and forever grateful to IVHQ, Evans, the friends I made in Frankadua, and my peers. I recommend this to anyone looking to have an experience like no other and who are will to make a small but impactful difference in a community. As well as everything that I have learned about myself.

This May I co-led a course of 10 students in Ghana. We worked with IVHQ to make all of the arrangements ahead of time, and I must say that teaming up with Kirsty was the best choice we've made! From the start she told us that IVHQ would take on all of the logistics, and that is exactly what happened. She listened carefully to the kind of experience we wished to create, and that is just what she designed--from the accommodation to the excursions to our host (the amazing Evans!). We arrived in Accra and spent two nights in the volunteer house in Madina. This allowed us to spend a full day touring the city, with Evans as our guide, and to have our orientation before heading to the Gold program in Asempanye. Accra is crowded and hot, but also includes wonderful historical and cultural sites, including the beautiful University of Ghana, Legon. Spending time there is also an important reminder of Ghana as a modern, growing country. Then we headed to Asempanye--our home for three weeks. The compound is fairly primitive and remote, a couple miles down a dirt road from the nearest junction town, and we loved that. It forced everyone to focus and adapt and stretch--we all learned to walk the 1/4 mile to the well and bring back our bucket of water for our showers, to do laundry, and to help others. We put down all of our regular access to the world. The village is small, but we regularly walked to other small villages for our service projects. We loved the staff at our compound, and worked especially closely with Tina and Giles. Tina led whichever students selected childcare, while Giles led both construction and teaching. My students all had the opportunity to try any of the three projects, which was something I really liked about this placement (thanks, Kirsty!). Our excursions to Cape Coast and Volta were also fantastic, but I will let the students write about those! From my perspective as a professor, the great thing about those was getting to see and learn more about the diversity of Ghana's environment, languages, and cultures. Evans was our touchstone throughout our time in Ghana. He was our trusted host from arriving at the airport to making sure we were settled in Asempanye to our amazing weekend excursions. Evans was quick to jump in to help around with any tasks in Accra, in Asempanye, on our excursions, and in-between. The transition from host to host+friend deepened the connections we all made during our stay. He anticipated our needs and always made sure we had whatever we wanted/needed, he answered our many, many questions, and his warm smile assured us that we also had a lifelong friend and trusted partner. Without a doubt I would work with IVHQ again to arrange the plans for a service-learning course. In fact, I plan to keep in touch with both Kirsty and Evans, and head back to Ghana in the future.

He helped us with the language, safety advice, acquiring cellphone service and even tourist guidance during our spare time. He simply was the focal point for any type of question. Internet service on my phone was good and not expensive. Local food was excellent. Drinking water (sold in 500ml sachets) was very cheap, easy to find and available everywhere. Public transportation (Trotro/Minivans) was quick and cheap. In the streets, there are small goats and chickens all around! On the other hand, local vendors in the streets and craft markets can be annoying to some people (I had no problem and didn't mind them) not leaving you alone. Some kids in the streets ask for money. There’s also a huge number of churches and religious ads. Visiting Cape Coast was awesome. Ghana is a beautiful country and Ghanaian people are extremely friendly. Ghana is also really safe. I recommend Ghana for first time travelers. Just have an open mind, an open heart and you will have the time of your life!

I started out in childcare on silver, where i met some truly beautiful people and I was welcomed into life in Ghana. Later, I moved to the agriculture program on the purple placement which was also fantastic. Facilities at both programs exceeded expectations, the food was delicious and the staff were exceptional. The staff at VCO/IVHQ were incredibly supportive and helpful. They responded efficiently and effectively to the few issues that I had whilst I was there and I'm so grateful for the support that they consistently provided! I have to say a massive thank you to Evans for organising a terrific weekend trip to Cape Coast for all the volunteers - it was so much fun and a great way to get to know the other volunteers, and for always being available to help us out no matter the time or day. Volunteering with IVHQ in Ghana was one of the greatest decisions I've ever made! Travelling by myself to Ghana I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, however the six weeks i spent there turned out to be the best time of my life and i needn't have worried at all! By volunteering with this company I felt that I was able to gain a really unique and special take on life in Ghana. The community were so welcoming and accepting, they seemed to really appreciate that we were not just tourists but also giving back to the people and the town that we were living in. Alongside the staff, they would go above and beyond to make sure that we were safe and happy! In both programs I felt that I was making a worthwhile difference, even if it was just to put a smile on a kid's face for the day by giving them an extra hug in the morning or shearing down grass out on the farm with a machete! It was truly rewarding. There was always something to get involved with, everyone was encouraged to have a go at whatever they felt comfortable trying. Living with other volunteers was a great experience and I met some incredible people who i'll never forget! There was plenty of help to try and sort out weekend travel if we wanted to do any and there were always people around to join in with, so you never felt alone. Ultimately, my time in Ghana was phenomenal and if anyone is looking for a great volunteer abroad experience I couldn't recommend IVHQ Ghana highly enough! My only regret is that six weeks was not long enough and I didn't want to leave!

I volunteered on the Gold program doing childcare, and it was the greatest experience of my life! As soon as a I arrived, I felt incredibly welcomed by everyone. The community and people and children we worked with were the most amazing people I have ever met. Everyone was excellent at their job including the program coordinator Benjamin, Tina who cooked for us, Prince, and Evans. I didn't work directly with Godfred because I was not on the construction program, but all of the volunteers who did spoke very highly of him. Our meals were incredibly delicious! Weekend travel was made very easy with the help of staff, Evans, who accompanied us on many excursions, and had experience with the places which we traveled. If you are thinking about going to Ghana, and want to meet the most amazing children and people, this is the program for you.

I just returned last week from volunteering at The Potter's Village in Dodowa, Ghana. It's about a 45 minute drive from Accra. I spent 2 weeks working with the children and enjoying getting to know others involved in the program as well and I'm already trying to figure out when I can go back! IVHQ provided transportation from the airport, orientation to help us settle in, and tours of other cities on the weekends. I fell in love with the kids I got to work with and I'm also happy to say I am staying connected to other volunteers and the IVHQ program coordinators now that I'm back. I really value the relationships I formed while I was there. If you are thinking about volunteering in Ghana, just do it!

I was in the pink program in Dodowa and it was the most challenging but rewarding thing I've ever done. I loved every second of my experience and I'm planning on going back for 2 months in June 2017. Not only were the kids incredible and humbling, but the other volunteers I met will be friends for life. The only thing I would change is how much money IVHQ told us to bring. I had no problem spending it, but I wish I would have known beforehand so I could have raised more for the kids. Otherwise, it was LIFE CHANGING and everyone should do it.

I was in the Purple Medical program for a week in Frankadua. When I first arrived in Accra the staff was very accommodating and I met great friends there that I would go to Cape Coast with. The living conditions in Frankadua were good, only no plumbing or running water. That was the only downfall. Going to Cape Coast with Evans and all of my friends I had made was hands down THE best experience of my life to date. So safe and fun, we were really able to enjoy ourselves and explore after a hard week at our programs. The staff at IVHQ is phenomenal and Evans is hands down one of my favorites! Such a nice guy and I'm happy to call him a friend. He really helped make our trip to Cape Coast great and I can speak for all of us when I say he was awesome and fun to hang out with. Benedict, Maggie and Evans - thank you guys! :) I can't wait to come back and volunteer again!

I and my two friends have placed in the silver program (teaching & childcare) for 2 weeks. Children in the orphanage were adorable, friendly and respectful. Most of the children approached us without any constraint since the first moment we met. Of course the volunteer duties were tough (Bathing, Dishing, Meal Servings...) but it should be because that was the purpose of this trip from the start. ^^ Food was great!!!!. Mama Pat (homestay host in our placement) was amazing cook. I LOVE her food. (I still think of her food here in Canada and trying to reproduce that taste but its pretty hard TT) It was OK for me but living condition can be challenging to someone at the first time. Just deal with that you will adapt to it anyways. IVHQ local team have provided great care throughout the entire trip. More than enough informations, advices, transportations etc. (thanks Evans) All volunteers have chance to travel to Cape Coast for 3 days in Ghana. During the vacation, I felt safe and being protected. The beach and food were great. Historical heritages and activities were unforgettable. All new environments became a nice and fresh shock to me. Overall, this volunteer trip was full of eye opening experience. I recommend this program to anyone who's ready to go abroad for volunteer

For several years I had anticipated serving as a global volunteer. During those years, I did my due diligence and soon realized that there are many volunteer organizations to choose from. Some charge steep fees to participate and others require a two week minimum commitment . After my beloved husband unexpectedly passed away last year, I decided to honor him by volunteering at an orphanage in Ghana during the first anniversary of his death. Since I have several responsibilities at home in the USA, I chose a one week Child Care Program with International Volunteer HQ. As a grandmother of three, I was led to believe that whatever I experienced in Ghana would be inspiring enough to further promote a spirit of serving others and giving-forward. My journey began in Accra, the capitol of Ghana. High rise buildings, shopping centers and bill boards lined the busy streets while local women carrying huge objects on their heads were an eye-catching divergence. Extremely impressive! As my journey continued, soon our group was driven to a rural town called Dodowa. It is where the orphanage, The Potter's Village is located. Dodowa is home to numerous goats, hens, chicks, roosters and a few random dogs here and there. The people are beautiful, friendly and smart. Most speak English along with their native tongue Twee. The children at the orphanage greeted my co-workers and myself with so much love and affection that by the time I said my good-byes on my last day, I literally sobbed. My departure left me with an overwhelming feeling of joy and a sense of purpose. The Potter's Village needs volunteers to assist them daily and they also need monetary support. One thing they have plenty of is unconditional love. My Ghana experience truly changed my life.

Going through IVHQ was a great way for me to volunteer and see a new country. Having someone take care of your food, housing, transportation, and placement was a huge relief while adjusting to a completely new and unfamiliar place. They also provided a step by step process and check list to prepare you. It saved me a lot of time and uncertainty.
