Huay Pakoot is pure magic.

March 01, 2025by: Martha CashProgram: Conservation Internship with Elephants in Thailand

Huay Pakoot is pure magic. After spending six months here as an apprentice in wildlife conservation, I can honestly say it has become my second home. From the moment I arrived, I was embraced with open arms, and the connections I've made here will last a lifetime. The kindness and warmth of the people make it impossible to feel lonely in Huay Pakoot. Working with elephants in a sustainable and ethical manner has been an incredibly rewarding experience, solidifying my passion for pursuing a career in conservation. I will truly miss being surrounded by stunning mountains and immersed in the beauty of nature. This internship has provided invaluable insights, broadening my understanding of global conservation challenges. However, the most memorable aspect of my time here has been the community. My homestay family made me feel completely at home, caring for me in every way'from preparing delicious meals to even making me broth when I wasn't feeling well. There's never a dull moment in Huay Pakoot, with activities like teaching English and learning about Karen culture, all of which keep you engaged and connected. I highly recommend this experience to anyone looking to pursue a career in conservation'it's a challenging but incredibly rewarding path! It's also a unique opportunity to step out of your comfort zone, immerse yourself in a different culture, and make a meaningful impact in both conservation and the local community. The staff team has been wonderfully supportive throughout my volunteering and work placement, and I am deeply grateful for their guidance and encouragement. Words can't fully capture the magic of this place. Thank you so much for everything!
