This project gives participants the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with a variety of animal-related issues from African wildlife in game reserves to local livestock on farms. The project offers a professional experience for volunteers in the context of animal welfare, management, and veterinary science. The three main focuses of the project are African wildlife, agricultural livestock, and domestic animals. Each section will offer new knowledge for about working with animals. For example, when studying African wildlife, volunteers will hear lectures about animal health and nutrition, tranquilization of animals, and game capture. While working under the agricultural livestock, the issues you will be dealing with are related to cattle, goats, and pigs. Lastly, while working with domestic animals you can help contribute to improving their poor living conditions and their basic healthcare.

Life in South Africa is full of contrasts—modern cities, rural villages, rugged coastlines, and some of the most breathtaking wildlife on earth. Through African Impact’s internship programs, you can step into this dynamic setting and contribute to projects that create lasting change. From the Western Cape to Limpopo, each placement is designed to offer real-world learning while supporting conservation and community needs. Internships typically run from 2 to 12 weeks, with start dates available throughout the year. Depending on your chosen focus, you could be based near Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, or the bushveld regions close to Kruger National Park. Alongside project work, you’ll enjoy evenings and weekends free to explore the country’s rich cultural traditions, game reserves, and scenic coastlines. This balance of structured work and adventure makes interning in South Africa both meaningful and unforgettable.

Situated on a Big 5 Game Reserve, this programme allows budding vets to get authentic experience with some of the most loved species on the planet. Volunteers will work alongside real vets and wildlife experts and learn first-hand how they help to look after the animals on the reserve. Volunteers will gain practical and theoretical knowledge, giving them a well-rounded view of life as a wildlife vet. Typical activities include assisting with minor operations, helping with the application of vitamin boosters, monitoring the behavior of the animals, and treating parasites - to name a few. In addition to hands-on veterinary care, participants learn about the life of a vet on a game reserve, including wildlife management and conservation. The programme is looking for pro-active and enthusiastic volunteers with a real drive and desire to help. Based close to Port Elizabeth, volunteers will get to enjoy the sea and surf on their weekends. A perfect way to relax after all the hard work! Accommodation is located on-site and three meals are provided per day.
