Social Work Internships in India

What I enjoyed most about this internship is the opportunity to contribute to work that has a clear and meaningful social impact. This made the work feel purposeful rather than purely task-driven. I especially valued the collaborative discussions with my supervisor. Knowing that the materials we create could directly support and empower women in difficult situations made the experience particularly rewarding. This internship strengthened my empathy and cultural awareness. I became more aware of how social, cultural, and economic factors influence personal decision-making, especially regarding sensitive topics like marriage and financial independence. This helped me grow in emotional intelligence and adaptability. Professionally, I gained experience in program design and curriculum brainstorming, improved my ability to communicate clearly in a remote environment, and developed stronger critical thinking skills when tailoring ideas to specific communities. I am also learning the importance of patience and long-term thinking in nonprofit and educational work, where impact is not always immediate but requires strategic planning and collaboration.

The remote Developmental Psychology internship shaped me greatly in my personal and career development, giving me ample opportunities to develop my skills in communication, efficiency in an online environment, and professionalism. I became more knowledgable in my future career field, and made meaningful connections throughout my time with my host organization.

Working with my supervisor was a wonderful experience despite the timezone difference. I am very grateful to have been able to spend my time researching on the topic of youth mental health and helping combat mindsets of domestic abuse from a young age. I am sure the experience has tremendously prepared me for my future career in Psychology where similar working ethics and research styles will come in handy.

The remote Introduction to Counseling Skills internship (hosted out of India) was much more comfortable than I thought as I can start my day whenever I'd like - this helps it feel less school-like with attendance. It's all about getting your tasks in, which I prefer to have my own schedule every week. I love seeing the different counseling techniques and alternative therapies used within counseling to help clients. Another thing I will highlight is the research requirement through all my case reports, I find it rewarding to find myself a topic to research on and write about in my case reports. I am proud to say that I will enter my Master's program this coming spring readily and more eager to deep dive into counseling better than before. The remote internship really helped to motivate me to improve my personal and professional development as a person and as an aspiring counsellor. I really enjoyed doing my own research through the case reports; personally finding something to research through each case report has helped me learn about the subject and the techniques involved.

My experience with Child Family Health International (CFHI) was nothing short of life-changing. As a Ugandan medical officer with a strong interest in global health, I joined CFHI’s Global Health in India program to deepen my understanding of healthcare systems in a diverse cultural context. The CFHI team, led by Mrs. Hema Pandey, provided unparalleled support throughout the application and travel processes, making me feel welcomed and prepared. The program featured enlightening visits to organizations such as Sulabh International, where I learned about groundbreaking sanitation initiatives, and CanSupport, which focuses on holistic care for cancer patients, among others. Observerships at Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital and Landou Community Hospital were particularly impactful to me, as I gained valuable insights into India's clinical care and public health practices. Additionally, the cultural experiences, including visits to the Taj Mahal and other iconic sites, as well as partaking in Diwali, enriched my appreciation for India’s heritage. CFHI’s dedication to cultural sensitivity and global collaboration in medicine is truly commendable. I returned home inspired and equipped with knowledge that will inform my advocacy for equitable healthcare in Uganda and beyond. I highly recommend CFHI to anyone seeking to broaden their horizons and make a meaningful difference in global health. Thank you, CFHI, for this incredible journey!

What I enjoyed most about the remote Clinical Psychology internship was how it became a meaningful part of my weekly routine. Every Saturday morning, watching the sunrise and joining the sessions provided both mental stimulation and a sense of purpose. The structure—from introductions to ongoing check-ins and the final review—made learning feel natural and engaging. The content was extremely useful, generously shared, and covered updated and practical topics applicable to future work in psychology. I learned to integrate knowledge into practice, consider multiple perspectives, respect cultural differences, and work effectively with patients as well as their families or support systems. The internship strengthened my professionalism, empathy, confidentiality, organisational skills, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability, contributing significantly to my personal and professional growth. What made this experience truly exceptional was my supervisor. She is not only incredibly knowledgeable and detail-oriented but also genuinely passionate about teaching and supporting her students. Her positive attitude, warmth, and encouragement created a judgment-free environment where I always felt comfortable asking questions and exploring new ideas. My supervisor challenged my inner blockages, inspired me to push beyond my limits, and made learning enjoyable even during intense or serious work. Over time, I came to see her as both a mentor and a friend, whose guidance and energy profoundly shaped my growth and deepened my passion for psychology.

My favorite part about this internship was getting to meet and work with new people from across the world. It was great to have their input as we worked, because they brought up points that I hadn't thought about.

I was grateful that I was able to observe real client-counsellor interactions and sessions, this gave me knowledge on the structure and communication style of counseling sessions and helped me learn to observe behavior. Learning about autism and women's empowerment in particular, will help me with my future career as well as all of the relevant skills I developed along the way. I found the Intern Abroad HQ portal very useful as it contained all of the information I needed to know about the internship in one place. It prepared me well and gave me insight into what I should expect. When I started my internship, any queries that I had, I was able to contact my supervisor and these were resolved almost immediately.

I enjoyed the variety of tasks I did during the internship. This internship contributed to my personal and professional development by giving me experience in the field I am interested in, along with boosting my confidence in my abilities to work in new environments.

The guidance and support I received was very encouraging. This internship provided me with a treasure trove of knowledge concerning mental health issues that are going on around the world and all the different ways they can be approached. It introduced me to an environment where not only am I dealing with another person's mental health but individuals who are also so young and impressionable. This experience prepared me for my future career as a mental health therapist in so many different ways and I am so thankful for that.

Spending a month in New Delhi through CFHI’s Global Health Program was truly one of the most transformative experiences of my medical and public health journey. The program offered a rare blend of clinical exposure, public health education, and cultural immersion allowing me to grow both professionally and personally. Through rotations with major hospitals and nonprofit organizations, I saw firsthand how healthcare is delivered in resource-limited settings with innovation, empathy, and deep community involvement. I was especially moved by the home-based palliative care model, where patients and families are cared for with dignity and compassion. I also engaged with programs addressing infectious diseases, substance use, and sanitation gaining a more nuanced understanding of social determinants of health and systems-level interventions. Equally impactful were the cultural experiences that gave me insight into the rich history and diversity of India. In Delhi, I explored landmarks like Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar, and the Lotus and Akshardham Temples. On weekends, I traveled to Jaipur to see the Amber Fort and Hawa Mahal, visited the majestic Taj Mahal in Agra, experienced spiritual serenity at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, and found peace in Rishikesh with yoga and a traditional aarti ceremony on the Ganges River. This program helped me become a more reflective, culturally sensitive future physician. It challenged me to think beyond clinical care and consider how public health, community context, and culture intersect in healing. I highly recommend CFHI to anyone passionate about global health, equity, and personal growth. The lessons and memories from India will stay with me for a lifetime.

I enjoyed the engagement my instructor had when hearing about my ideas and theories. The support was amazing. I would love my future career to involve research, and being a part of this program propelled me towards that career goal. This internship built my research skills by using real world studies to apply to real world issues. It allowed me to research various psychology articles and methods to reduce violence and aggression amongst children, providing a comprehensive report on the effectiveness of child centered play therapy in educational settings.

I enjoyed the flexibility and the positive atmosphere of this internship. This internship has helped me expand my knowledge about a different culture and has helped my strengthen skills, such as organization and time management.

During my remote Clinical Psychology internship, I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to analyze real counseling cases and collaborate with my supervisor to identify client goals. This hands-on experience deepened my understanding of cultural differences in therapeutic approaches, particularly between India and the U.S., enhancing my cultural competence—a skill vital for effective counseling. The experience also strengthened my ability to navigate communication challenges, adapt to diverse perspectives, and practice patience in a professional setting. These insights have significantly contributed to my personal growth and professional development, reinforcing my passion for mental health counseling and equipping me with practical tools for my future career.

My #1 favorite memory from the internship was when I successfully facilitated a presentation to caregivers about how to create positive relationships with infants. The program actively involves the community through outreach and education, ensuring that mental health services are not only accessible but also culturally aligned with the needs of different groups within the community, especially for the program that I had.

Intern Abroad was very patient and supportive, and that made me determined to perform to the best of my abilities. Going into the details of anxiety and depression made me gain a whole new understanding of these mental health issues. Therefore, if I encounter anyone who seems to have anxiety and/or depression, I will be more confident in helping them get their lives back on track so that they can be physically and mentally fit.

I enjoyed working with a flexible, remote schedule while learning about cultural differences in Spain. I also enjoyed learning about my supervisors day-to-day life at work looks and about all the different types of patients they work with. It allowed me to learn about different people, different techniques and which patients I preferred working with so that I may pursue a career in that field. For example, I really enjoyed working with child patients, so I may pursue a masters in developmental psychology.

This internship opened my perspective and prior knowledge about different cultures. I really enjoyed being able to apply my knowledge of psychology to the real world and to see how important this career path is globally.This will be my second internship with Inter Abroad HQ and I am so glad that I was able to pursue this experience. Mental health is a global issue. Psychologists are needed globally, and every person around the world should have access to a psychologist, whether that be a counselor or a therapist. I want to continue to gain more information about mental health and find ways to help those around the world who may be suffering.

I learned a lot about Clinical Psychology, but also the culture of another country as well. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to participate in the remote Clinical Psychology (hosted out of India).

I enjoyed meeting my supervisor. She was very nice and gave me plenty new insights to the inequality and inequity still presence in the world. I gained a lot of new perspectives from this internship on the world that would help me in my future personal and professional development
