CIEE Summer Intern and Study Abroad are 6 to 7-credit, 6-week programs with a part-time internship (approximately 20 hours weekly), a seminar, and a 3-credit academic course. CIEE Semester Internships CIEE Semester Global Internships are 9 to 13-credit, 12-week programs that feature a full-time internship (approximately 30 hours weekly), a seminar, and an optional 3 to 4-credit academic course online. CIEE Semester Intern and Study Abroad Programs are 12 to 14-credit, 12-week programs that feature a part-time internship​ (approximately 20 hours weekly), a seminar, and two academic courses.

Program participants will gain a global perspective on the overall Ghanaian healthcare system delivery services, various socioeconomic factors, and the structural and financial healthcare challenges medical professionals deal with. They will be able to address public health topics like family planning, adoption, teen pregnancy, sex education, and endemic tropical diseases. They will gain an understanding of how some of the issues are viewed culturally in this day and age. Participants will rotate in various departments at the hospital, and will work alongside medical professionals, medical students, and specialists. They will also explore community health centers connected to the hospital.

Volunteers will be based in a hospital that provides services in general medicine: ophthalmology, ECG, venereology, dermatology, x-ray, laboratory tests, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, medicine, ultrasound, and mother and child healthcare. There is only one laboratory in the whole hospital, which focuses on blood, urine, and feces, so volunteers will never be short of work to do! This is a fantastic project for anyone with an interest in laboratory work as volunteers will gain an insight into local diseases. Volunteers are highly valued by the local staff and encourage cross-cultural awareness and the development of making global citizens. In connection to COVID-19, Ghana has put in place some precautionary measures for the locals' and visitors' safety. Volunteers need to be fully vaccinated to participate in the program. You will also be required to take a PCR test at the airport upon arrival in Ghana. You will be spending ​the first three nights in a hotel arranged by the ground team before joining your homestay.

Screening / Medical Check-Up We will take weight, height, BMI, temperature, cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure measurements for both children and adults. About 3,000 patients are expected to receive medical attention, each receiving prescriptions to collect needed medicines at our dispensary. Public Education The outreach includes public health education and one-on-one counselling sessions for patients who need extra guidance. Dispensary Medicines for common conditions—such as cough, headaches, colds, malaria, hypertension, and arthritis—will be provided upon prescription. Freebies A stand at the venue will offer free toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, sanitary pads, and sweets to beneficiaries. Why This Project Matters We aim to make healthcare accessible to communities that cannot afford regular medical visits. The outreach provides health education, basic screening, first-hand treatment, and referrals for complicated cases to the regional hospital.
