Biomedical Scientist/Medical Laboratory Technician

by: Our Generation Voluntary Organisation

5 (1)Since 2004

Ghana is often considered the top destination in Africa for volunteering in laboratory and diagnostic research. Located in West Africa, Ghana offers a relatively peaceful environment and well-distributed health facilities across the country. Many of these facilities include laboratories or diagnostic centers that play a crucial role in delivering reliable healthcare services. Volunteering or interning in a community laboratory in Ghana allows you to apply empirical observation and precise measurements to study common tropical diseases such as malaria, anemia, and typhoid. You will also gain insights into how HIV/AIDS can be addressed through stigma-free community interventions aimed at reducing its spread. The laboratory you’ll work with is small to medium in size, community-based, and dedicated to supporting both clinicians and patients by providing essential diagnostic services. It serves a hospital that offers general medical care, and all departments refer their patients to this single lab. As a result, the lab experiences a significantly high workload, offering a hands-on, fast-paced learning environment.

Fantastic Program!!!

My trip with OGVO was by far my favorite experience yet. The program did a fantastic job of taking care of every single need and want, always working to make my experience even better. My internship in a diagnostic lab was well organized and adaptable to my interests, and the members of OGVO were incredibly flexible in working around different hours based on what I wanted to work on. Communication was easy and reliable. My host family stay was extremely welcoming and fun, and I had the chance to befriend wonderful roommates. Everyone within the organization, and within Ghana in general, was extremely kind, and I made excellent connections with many different people. Accommodations were great, and every need was met and solved quickly. The weekend excursions were also a wonderful break from the week and a chance to get the tourist side of Ghana. While it took a moment to adjust after all the travel, I was, in the end, well cared for, entertained, and able to engage closely with what I was passionate about. I had a life-changing trip with OGVO, and I do not think it would have ever been the same with a different organization. Thank you, OGVO!!
