Prepare to Intern Abroad
Set goals
A great idea for any intern heading abroad is to make some goals! Here are a few to help you get started for your internship abroad in England.
- Learn practical skills or techniques. Spend intentional time, like working alongside a mentor or signing up for a class covering the material, on it to refine, grow, or expand your skills.
- Be aware and develop soft skills. A new environment can help jump-start one of those skills if you're in a rut.
- Find a community outside of a professional setting. Find your place in England outside of work by signing up for a class, recreation organization, or group.
Understand the benefits
There are plenty of perks for interning in England, here are just a few highlights.
- International market. England has, and continues to have, one of the greatest variety of career fields to work in. From arts and tourism to business and tech, the country has plenty of leads for all!
- Great location. The island is a spectacular jumping-off point if you’re looking to explore the Republic of Ireland, Europe, and even Northern Europe.
- Professionally regarded. An internship here can unlock a lot of future job opportunities and showcase some great qualities before you ever sit down for an interview.
Things to know
Wherever you head off to in England, know, any intern should be aware of the following.
- Accommodations. The included living arrangements are typically in homestays with a local British family, apartments, or residence halls with other interns. You can also opt for a homestay and find out if afternoon tea lives up to all the hype.
- Visa and paper requirements. Non-EU citizens seeking internships in England will need to acquire a Tier 5 visa. Consult GoAbroad’s Embassy Directory for the latest info on visas required for internships in England.
- Cost and logistics. England’s cost of living is moderately expensive, especially in London. Consider roommates, budgeting, and finding a student or young traveler passes for public transportation and social outings to save money. The countryside towns are less expensive than London.
- Cultural and social etiquette. England is a pretty casual country in terms of general social norms. Drinking is a part of the casual social fabric of England, a drink is fair game after work or something more formal.
Choose a location
There’s so much opportunity throughout the country, it can be a big choice to choose! Here are some popular places to pick.
London
As the most populated and central city of England, London offers interns a quintessentially British experience with its well-known touristy sites, red phone booths, and double-decker buses. Home to the London Stock Exchange, the West End Theatre, and ranked as the most visited city in the world, London has opportunities for interns in any field.
Bristol
Nestled on the western coast of England is Bristol, a city known for its long maritime history and established industries in electronics and aerospace — a solid choice for internships in England. Kick back with your fellow interns at a pub with the city’s famous cider, next to the Suspension Bridge, then get some built-in exercise navigating the city’s hilly landscape.
Manchester
Manchester is England’s second largest city after London, built on the foundations of the Industrial Revolution and still an important economic center. With no end to the diversity of cuisines and pubs, your palette and appetite will leave Manchester completely satisfied.
Choose a field
England is no stranger to large, multinational brands, and boasts many recognizable big names like Burberry, Shell, BP, and the accounting giant Deloitte.
Communications
The city’s professional field was built by people in communications by building relationships, connecting people, and being able to showcase the highlights of a company. Interns will gain some incredible and advanced international knowledge in one of the most highly regarded markets there are.
Graphic Design
Graphic Design is a field that has grown exponentially more important with the development of technology and the internet. What’s great about the field is that, for the most part, the principles are uniform so an internship anywhere in the world is a great choice. England’s offerings do have a leg up just by the fact of how robust the reputation of the market is.
Fashion Industry
You may be thinking, why work in the fashion industry in England when France isn’t that far away? The English market is one of the largest in the world, that’s why! It has a workforce of about over one million and is a billion-dollar industry. Not to mention, England is quite a fashionable place, giving birth to the ‘Modernist’ trend in fashion.

Its time to get out of my bubble
August 14, 2026by: Adya J - IndiaLondon was the most unrealistic experience for me! The work-life balance culture, dressing, food, lifestyle, people everything seemed like a fantasy. These 2 months are something I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Never did I think I would get to meet such great people, eat all this food, and party as I've never done before! The experience coordinators were the absolute best. They ensured we had a great time, did not make us feel like we were away from home, and most importantly, they were our friends! We talked, ate, and went out together like we've known each other since forever. Honestly, I wasn't sure about this entire experience, but once I got here, oh boy, I would give my heart and soul for this to just be my reality. My opinion, be unsure, dream unrealistically, spend that money, overthink it, but take that step and go for it, because what's the worst that could happen?

A Valuable and Eye-Opening Internship Experience
August 10, 2026by: Delfin Aksu - TurkeyMy internship with The Intern Group was a very valuable experience for me, both personally and professionally. As this was my first experience working in the industry, I wasn’t completely sure what to expect, but I was able to adapt to the working environment much more easily than I thought. One of the most valuable parts of this experience was that it made me think more seriously about the career path I would like to follow in the future. There are so many different areas and opportunities within computer science and technology, and having the chance to gain real work experience helped me better understand what kind of work I enjoy, what I am good at, and what might suit me best in the future. I also had the opportunity to meet new people, experience a different working environment, and learn many things outside of my university studies. I am especially grateful to my workplace mentors, who were incredibly patient, supportive, and welcoming throughout my internship. They always took the time to help me whenever I had questions or was unsure about something. Everything was explained to me in great detail, and I was guided through unfamiliar tasks in a way that helped me genuinely understand what I was doing. Having such supportive mentors made it much easier for me to learn, build my confidence, and feel comfortable in my first professional working environment. I also really appreciated all the events and activities organised by The Intern Group. I genuinely enjoyed every event I attended, and they made the whole experience even more memorable and enjoyable. They were also a great opportunity to meet and spend time with people from different backgrounds and make new connections. I am very thankful to The Intern Group team for organising them and for always being so supportive throughout my time here. Overall, I am very grateful for this experience and for everyone who contributed to it. I feel like I am leaving with a clearer idea of my future career, new experiences, new connections, and great memories. Thank you to everyone who made this experience so positive!

I enjoyed exploring its museums, theatres, parks, and vibrant neighbourhoods. The public transport is convenient, and there is always something new to discover. Although the cost of living is very high, the experience of living and working here has been unforgettable. My internship gave me valuable insight into the UK healthcare system and helped me improve my communication skills. Interning in Film & TV in London
May 07, 2026by: Eva Matzinger - SwitzerlandI had the incredible opportunity to intern in Film & TV production in London. During my internship, I assisted the production company with administrative tasks and supported the overall post-production process of a feature film that they are planning to release soon. It was amazing to be surrounded by such a welcoming and talented team, and they taught me so much about what goes into making a film and how it is successfully marketed and sold within the industry. Overall, the internship programme was a fantastic experience. The intern group also organised great social events, including a theatre visit that I absolutely enjoyed. More Than an Internship
April 01, 2026by: Anna Tran - CanadaMy internship experience with Beyond Academy was incredibly valuable, both professionally and personally. From the beginning, the program was well-structured and supportive, making the transition into a new work environment feel smooth and exciting rather than overwhelming. One of the standout aspects of Beyond Academy is the level of guidance and mentorship provided. The team consistently checked in, offered advice, and created a strong sense of community among interns. This made a huge difference, especially being in a new city and navigating a new industry. Their workshops and career coaching sessions were particularly helpful in building confidence, refining my professional skills, and thinking more intentionally about my career path. Through my placement, I was able to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, creative environment. I developed practical skills, learned how to collaborate effectively within a team, and gained insight into the realities of working in my field. The exposure to real projects and responsibilities helped me grow quickly and feel more prepared for future opportunities. Beyond the professional side, the cultural and social aspects of the program were just as rewarding. Meeting other interns from around the world, exploring the city together, and sharing experiences made the internship even more memorable. Overall, I would highly recommend Beyond Academy to anyone looking to gain meaningful work experience while also growing personally. It’s a great balance of professional development, support, and adventure, and it has definitely been a defining experience in my journey so far.

We're also delighted that your placement gave you the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects, develop new skills, and gain valuable insight into your chosen field. Experiences like these are exactly what we hope our interns take away from their time on the program. One of the best parts of an international internship is the people you meet along the way, so we're glad you were able to connect with fellow interns and explore London together. Those friendships and memories often end up being just as impactful as the professional experience itself. Thank you again for your kind words and recommendation. We loved being part of your journey and can't wait to see where your career takes you next. Wishing you all the best for the future!
