What inspired you to travel abroad?

What inspired me to go abroad was my desire for adventure and to see different cultures. I went to Italy in 2016 when my sister studied abroad there and it really ignited my passion for exploring foreign environments and learning what life is like in other places.

Why did you choose CAPA The Global Education Network?

I chose my specific program because I spoke with the University of Pittsburgh's study abroad office and was advised by another student that London would be a great place to explore, especially for my marketing major. Another student at the PittBusiness Career Fair told me that doing an internship abroad would be a life-changing experience and she was right.

What was your favorite part about London?

My favorite part about London is that there's something new to see and do everyday. With all of the diverse boroughs and neighborhoods there is something different and new everyday. I was able to see where different immigrants went and their different cultures within London which was also a really amazing perk to the incredible city.

What made your experience abroad extraordinary?

What made my experience abroad extraordinary was being able to see so many different cultures and environments around me. Not only in London, but I was also fortunate enough to be able to travel to a good amount of different countries within Europe and I was able to see their different cultures and the beautiful views that took my breath away.

How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?

Local staff was extremely helpful with anything I needed. They helped me with any questions I had regarding the area, traveling, medical, academics and my internship. They were always very helpful, supportive, and kind.

What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?

The thing that I wish I had done differently is that I wish I branched out more to people when I first got there because I started to get to know some really awesome people towards the end of my trip and I wish I had gotten more time with them.

Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.

A typical day abroad was either walking to CAPA in the morning, completing classes and then going home to make dinner and do homework, or I would get on the tube the days of my internship and go to Wimbledon at Engage Research, work, get back on the tube and go home for dinner. On weekends is when I primarily did my traveling and excursions because it was often already dark when I got home during the week.

What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?

During my free time I really enjoyed just walking around different areas and exploring. It was fun to try food and experiences that I couldn't get back in the States.

What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?

I lived in a Studio Apartment in West Kensington. My favorite part about it is that it was only a 20-minute walk from CAPA and the route was very scenic.

What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?

Make sure that if you're doing the internship to be very descriptive on what you want so you can get the best fit for you. If you're vague there's a possibility that you won't be placed where you're truly interested.

Would you recommend CAPA The Global Education Network to others? Why?

I would definitely recommend GBI London with CAPA to others because it was an amazing experience. The CAPA program gives you lots of opportunities to see the city and go around England. They give you support when needed and an academic program that gives you global perspectives while adding to your major or general education requirements.

What do you feel is the biggest benefit of traveling abroad?

I think the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is being more aware of your surroundings and it makes you reflect on how people all around the world live and conduct their lives. It's an eye-opening experience and it's beautiful to embrace the different cultures and environments.

Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?

I think my time abroad impacted my life because it sparked a desire for adventure and has made me more fearless with exploring new places where my University is located and even around my hometown. It has also inspired me to make a bucket list to visit every continent at least once in my lifetime.

What does meaningful travel mean to you?

Meaningful travel means to me that you get something out of traveling that was able to touch you or touch other people. The travel has made a difference that you will be able to reflect on throughout your life.
