Tropical Field Research

During the Seeds of Change Tropical Rainforest Research Program, students are immersed in a hands-on field research program that takes advantage of the immense biodiversity of the tropical rainforest. They learn how to apply the scientific method while collaborating with team members to establish their original research question as well as the experimental design for their project. Students work together to implement their research and learn how to work as a team to overcome challenges and rebound from failures within resource and time constraints, just as in any real-world project. They use statistics to validate the results of their experiments and give presentations showing the results of their work, just like any research scientist would! The Tropical Field Research program prepares students for university-level science. Students learn how to work as a team, handle differences, and take advantage of the ways others communicate best. Students use TypeCoach to help navigate team-member differences. They learn and apply the most appropriate experimental designs, apply key statistical analysis techniques, and present their research in Costa Rica and their community at home.

Guatemala Semester: Spanish & Activism (Gap Year)

A narrow strip of mountains, jungles, and fiery volcanoes unites North and South America and splits the world's largest oceans. Central America has been a focal point for flourishing cultures, biodiversity, migration, and trade for thousands of years. The modern-day inhabitants of this isthmus are the descendants of the Mayan and Aztec empires, in addition to descendants of the Spanish invaders of the 1500s and the enslaved Africans brought with them. For centuries, these diverse peoples and their cultures have interacted and mixed to shape modern-day Central America's distinct and vibrant nations. Today, the communities sharing this unique heritage continue their legacy of adaptation, responding to rapid environmental and social challenges with innovative communal strategies. This gap year semester takes a hands-in-the-dirt approach to interacting with Indigenous culture and collective life in Guatemala and Nicaragua through extended rural homestays, one-on-one language study, work on communal farms, and a participatory examination of land use and grassroots activism.

A Guide to Gap Years in Central America

Best Countries

Like nearly 10% of the world’s species, you could visit all seven countries on the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor that put the “Central” in Central America...but slowing down to take it all in will ensure you sound really smart when you talk about them.

Belize. Don’t let your mouth gape while snorkeling the Belize Barrier Reef or diving the mysterious sinkhole that is the Great Blue Hole in Caye Caulker during Central America gap years. Need a water break? Visit Punta Gorda to admire the ruins of ancient Mayan city Lubaantun.

Guatemala. Architecture buff? Stroll down the colorful streets of Antigua, Guatemala, and admire its Spanish colonial houses. The view of Volcán de Fuego ain’t too shabby either. For more volcano views and endless indigenous villages, Lago de Atitlán won’t disappoint during your gap year in Central America. A visit to the capital, Guatemala City, will have your mouth watering for tamales.

Costa Rica. Wanna join the ranks of the world’s most adventurous surfers, or just lazily lust after them? The Guanacaste province of Costa Rica is perfect for either sport. Artsy-er gappers should visit capitol San Jose to catch a show at the National Theater during gap year programs in Central America. Off the beaten path is Barrio Amón, a neighborhood constructed atop a coffee plantation, boasting the best galleries in the city.

Everything is part of the experience. Learning how to go with the flow is an essential part of staying here. I’ve made so many new friends, locally and from around the world. The workers are fantastic and super accommodating, as long as you’re reachable and communicating. I’ve enjoyed working with kids and every new day brings about something new to learn. I love my Spanish classes and we’ve been correcting things I learned in school and building off of it. I’m really excited for the rest of my time here. ¡Pura vida!
