Widows Encouragement & HIV/AIDS Foundation (WEHAF) is an NGO based in Arusha, Tanzania, working to uplift vulnerable women, widows, and children affected by HIV/AIDS and poverty. This is an empowerment program based in Tanzania. In this program, volunteers with good hearts and an open mind are needed. Empowering Women and Girls is a program designed to strengthen groups who come from a truly heartbreaking background; from being shamed for being HIV positive to abandonment due to assault, and a level of poverty that will be hard for most people from the Western world to imagine. The goals are to help women become self-sufficient and to recruit and help more. Some of the volunteer opportunities are community work, counseling for HIV victims and home victims, palliative care, and youth programs such as healthcare training in schools and communities. This project also involves teaching women skills such as gardening, crafts, English, entrepreneurship, business, IT, and finance. Participation in any of these activities depends on how comfortable you are with tending to the task provided. If you feel uncomfortable with a task, it is okay to be substituted by a member of staff. To volunteer, you need to directly give a $100 contribution to the center.

This program gives you the chance to take real action by educating communities about family planning, HIV prevention, and female rights—especially in rural Maasai areas. You'll work directly with safe homes for girls who have escaped forced marriages, rape, or other forms of violence. Through outreach in schools and villages, you’ll help raise awareness and empower local women and girls to claim their rights and live free from harm. Most volunteers join Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., leaving you plenty of time to explore Tanzania.
