Volunteering in South Africa was a dream come true!

December 29, 2024by: Maria Villalvazo - Mexico

I am beyond grateful for my 1-month volunteer experience with African Impact in Cape Town. From the moment I arrived, the warmth and professionalism of the team made it unforgettable. When I first arrived at the airport, Thulani, the program manager, was already waiting, and ready to give us an engaging introduction to the history and scenery of Cape Town. After a 20+ min drive we arrived at The Lenox hostel. The Lenox became my home for the month, and the staff made sure it felt that way. Everyone was very kind and welcoming at all time. I got a bunk bed in a shared room with four amazing fellow volunteers from different countries. The room was very spacious and comfortable. The facilities were bright and welcoming, with breathtaking views of Lion’s Head and Table Mountain from the lounge balcony. I joined the Early Education program, which I highly recommend if you love working with children and creating engaging learning experiences. Through this program I worked with four different nonprofits located in Khayelitsha, their work is centered around fostering children and youth development. Our schedule was almost the same every day; breakfast with all the volunteers, then going out to support an org. in the morning, coming back to the Lenox for lunch (amazing fresh and delicious food by the way) and then going back to support another org. in the afternoon. Our day concluded around 5 pm, after documenting our experiences, and preparing for the next day. Then dinner time, a great time to get to know the other volunteers and share stories. The rest of the afternoon was free time for us to unwind and enjoy visiting places around Cape Town or do a sightseeing activity planned by the staff. The most rewarding part was getting to work directly with nonprofits like Ikasi Soccer School and foster care homes like Fikelele. My favorite task while on project was to sing and play with the kids. Witnessing the impact of our efforts and the joy on the children’s faces are core memories from this experience. I don’t think I can put into words how fulfilling this experience was for me. This experience taught me so much about collaboration, creativity, and the joy of giving back. Volunteering with African Impact was life changing. It’s a core memory filled with friendships, personal growth, and unforgettable moments. I wholeheartedly recommend this experience to anyone looking to make a difference while exploring the vibrant culture of Cape Town.

My time in Livingstone, Zambia was unforgettable! I volunteered at the teaching project during school holidays. African Impact organised a holiday club for the children in Libuyu for keeping them busy during school holidays and keeping them off the streets. The children were divided in two groups: 1-4th grade and 5-7th grade. However, the groups were very big (40 children each) it was really fun to work with the children. Annie, the teaching and sports coordinator, did such a good job! During the first days you can choose to assist her to get introduced and used to the teaching methods, and if you're ready for it you can take up more responsibilities. There is also the opportunity to switch between teaching and sports. The sports project is organised together with a local staff memeber, Chiza, who is doing an amazing job with the children. Everyday there is another subject, for instance history, geography, maths, english, eco-art, etc. In the afternoon, there is a wide range of community projects and Sjeel, the project manager, makes sure that you can get a taste of each of them. If you have any preferences you can just let her know. I really enjoyed reading club, art club and the stretching exercises we've implemented at the old people's home. During the weekends you're free to do some travelling or activities. The staff of the hostel will give you the information you need and will help you by booking these activities as well. A visit to Victoria Falls is obviously a must do, and they arrange a free shuttle every morning. The volunteering staff as well as the hostel staff are such lovely people and I'm so glad I got the chance to get in touch with them all. Same for the volunteers! Everyone comes with the same goal and mindset, so you will definitely make some friends from all around the world. This is definitely a life-changing experience!

2 weeks on the community project

I was on the community project for two weeks at Antelope Park. It was my second time here at Antelope Park, last year I was on the lion project but this time I wanted to try something different. The community project was amazing and I got to do so many different things, teaching at Julena, a remote school in a rural area was without a doubt my favourite! Interacting with the children, cooking traditional foods when on home visits, helping out at the orphanage, just a few examples of the everyday life on the project. I loved meeting people from around the world and especially the community staff members were so nice and made the whole experience even more fun! I really enjoyed my time here on the project and I really look forward to coming back once more!

We had an amazing two week stay in Antelope Park, volunteering on the Community and Lion project. Early starts and long days but it was a once in a lifetime experience. Our community work was a huge reality check, and I have learned so much from that.

To day is my last day and I want to tell you how much I am grateful for what I learned here and for the kindness and involvement of the managers and the community. THANK YOU

In the two weeks I was here on the teaching project i had formed such A Close bond with the kids and wish i had stayed for longer as time flies so fast. The staff at the backpackers are so kind and the food tastes amazing. Would definitely recommend the teaching project as it so diverse and amazing.

It was my first time in Zanzibar and also my first time volunteering. I did not know what to expect from this experience before leaving. When I arrived I immediately had an amazing impression of the group (staff and volunteer). It has been a fantastic experience, and I'm looking forward to come back next year. I always felt very involved in teaching and I definitely loved it. My students have always been so interested in learning. This experience gave me the possibility to give a lot, but I strongly think that you receive more than you give.

My time in Tanzania and on project has been amazing. I was a little apprehensive before I arrived as to how easy it would be to settle into the projects, but after the first day, with people helping me out, I felt right at home. The people, the accommodation and the experience have all been fantastic.

A life changing experience.

My time with African Impact in Moshi has been so amazing. Everyday i'm here, it gets better and better!! The people I have met, and the friendships I have made, will stay with me for a long time. This is the first volunteering placement that I have ever done, I therefore was unsure on what to expect when coming here. My expectations have been surpassed so much, and the way the project is managed is so effective. All staff are so personable, and make you feel like part of the family (A really super cool one!). I have been in Moshi for 1 month, and it will be so hard to leave. All projects that I have worked with have been so inspiring. African Impact's work is appreciated by all recipients so much, and is so much part of the local community. - leading to some amazing friendships. I would recommend coming to Moshi so much, it has really changed my outlook on so many things and I shall certainly be returning!! Thank you to the amazing staff and team, I will miss you all.

African Impact is such a wonderful organization. I feel so at home here and am incredibly fortunate to have been a part of yalls family for the past few weeks. I would like to say thank you for your patience, friendliness, and humble nature. Every morning, I was greeted with warm smiles and "Mambo's" which made the Tanzanian Community feel like family. I cannot express how grateful I feel for having been given this opportunity. Ahsante Sana

Those past 4 weeks flew by. I loved the flexibility, because it enabled me to also try the home based-care and to see more than one school. The teaching experience opened my eyes. You can see everywhere sand, holes and trash, but the mentality is nonetheless so much more positive, more free and more gentle than where I come from. The people i worked with were amazing. The children I thought were amazing. The trips in the weekend were amazing. The food was amazing.

My time on project w completely eye opening and breathtaking. We start our mornings being greeted with "Teacher! Teacher! Teacher!" And it really reinforces how important the work that African Impact does and how important learning is to the students. They hang on to and treasure every word you say because they do want to learn and it makes you feel so appreciated. The children's beautiful smiles are enough to turn your day around and fill you with happiness. Teaching adults has had a huge impact on me also. They too are so willing to learn and it is so important for them because they are nurturing their futures. As much as they want to hear volunteers teach, I also wanted to hear their stories. They are such strong, resilient and happy people. Their smiles are infectious and their reasons for wanting to learn English touch your heart. Coming home from teaching, everyone in the Jambiani village greets you with "karibu sana" and it becomes a home away from home very easily. On top of everything, the gorgeous ocean and beautiful nature of this town is stunning, and I feel so lucky to live in a world where places like this exist. I will never forget everything that I have done here, thanks to my students and locals, African Impact staff and my fellow volunteers.

My stay at Antelope Park

I have had the great opportunity to experienced both the lion project for four weeks, but also the community project for four weeks. To wake up every morning and either go on a lion walk or an elephant herding before breakfast is a feeling I will never be able to explain. It's something that must be experienced. Even when I got to help with the everyday duties, that must be done, like cleaning, snaresweep, fixing the roads etc I still had a great time and experience new and amazing things everyday. During my stay I've met 66 volunteers from 14 different countries and an amazing team of staff that all have played a big part of my stay being as good as it was. I'm so happy that I chose to combine the two projects because I feel that it gave me the chance to see and learn as much as possible during my stay. To get the opportunity to come so close to the animals and learn so much about them and at the same time get to spend time with the community. During my time at community project I've done both home visits, teaching at two different schools, been part of educating about conservation of african wildlife, assisting at the clinics, done two nightshifts at the clinic, spending time with the boys at the drop-in, visited a church, helped in the process of building a new school, visited the orphanage several times and also spent time at a support group for people that are HIV positive. Thanks to this I've gotten to see a lot of the community and the culture of the people living here, which I am forever thankful for.

This has been the best 3 weeks of my life, and I am definitely coming back. Everything was very structured and planned, from I ordered via GoXplore to now that I am leaving. The staff and all the people are very nice, and you are very welcomed. There are also so many social activities you can join, and you really get friends for life. The only thing which could be improved is the showers, because only 1/3 shower worked. And it was several times there were no toilet paper.

What a beautiful group of people.

A chance to go closer to Africa I did tree volunteer projects during the last half year. I was one week volunteering in Mozambique on a marine foundation as a diver, I was one month teaching on Bali. Both projects were NGOs too. But to compare I have tos ay, the project in Livingstone was the best one. For different reasons: I appreciate the good working administration, the friendly contact which Africa Impact has with the schools, farm and old people home. It's a good sign. I also like to stay at the Backpackers home. It's nice, friendly, cool and clean ( I mean for Africa). Okay, the food could be better, more African style. I really liked the social part in Backpackers (movie night, evening at the river...) maybe you could offer more. I loved the holiday week - I'm happy I was there in January, although it was to often raining. But this week was really fun. The weeks with teaching were sometimes a bit boring and I felt so so useful. Because it's so different to teach there (big classes, noch computer, no books, no beamer, NOTHING). I was not surprised about that and it's not a complaint, it's Africa ... but it's takes time to go familiar with it. In the second week it was already just a little bit easier to handle. The most of the teacher are very friendly and support the volunteers. The kids are just wonderful! Great time with them. I'm also happy that Africa Impact is working with The Happy Africa Foundation - that's a wise and useful teamwork. I love the Victoria Falls and the lot of activities I did, even they are very expensive. To compare to my time in Bali I missed the option to explore Livingstone area for myself. No biking or motorbike for renting. So I felt sometimes I had to stuck on the Backpackers home.

Zanzibar teaching and community project

I spent 3 weeks in the Zanzibar teaching and community project and really enjoyed the time here. You are located in a nice house directly at the stunning beautiful beach of Jambiani. We had to teach adults as well as nursery school children. It was so nice to see their willingness to learn. It it the perfect teaching situation: Both, teachers and students, voluntarily spend their time to learn respectively to teach. You can imagine that this is a very fruitful combination. All people in the town are very respectful. They treat you as your teacher not as a tourist. Children as shouting "teacher, teacher" when they see you on your bike. The project managers are very professional. Harry and Sherice do everything to keep a good organization. And believe me, there are lots of things that need to be organized. African Impact can be proud to have 2 so enthusiastic people on board! To sum up: It was a great experience to be here on the project. I stayed in one of the most beautiful places on earth. I could help the people to increase their chances on the job market. I got an deep insight in the local peoples daily life. And last but not least I spent time with lovely people, like Harry, Sheriece and Dulla.

My time in Zanzibar has been nothing short of amazing. As soon as I stepped out of the taxi I felt instantly welcomed not only by the amazing project managers and other volunteers but also every local I passed by. The staff here are very accommodating and go above and beyond to help you with absolutely anything, answer all of your questions and make you feel happy and welcomed. Teaching my classes is an experience that I will never forget. I have never felt so much satisfaction as I do when I teach my both my nursery classes and my adult English class. So many of my students have such a hunger to learn and so much potential. Coming here would have to be one of the best and most rewarding things that I have ever done. I have fallen so in love with Zanzibar and all of the people here. I would definitely recommend this project to everyone!

Volunteering projects are very well managed, and also flexible to switch projects. The house is comfortable for privacy and socializing. Livingstone is pretty good for socialising too, as there are places to go on the weekend.

I booked my volunteer experience quite last minute (just one month before I was due to arrive in Moshi) and from my very first conversation with Kylie (super friendly destination manager) I felt happy and confident that I was making a great decision to join the project. From the first moment I arrived at the volunteer house I was greeted by some of the friendliest people you could ever hope to meet. I felt assured from day one that I had joined a truly worthwhile project with great people who were always on hand with support and made my whole time in Moshi fun and meaningful. I would recommend African impact Moshi to any and all who want a truly life changing volunteer experience.

The main aim of the project is to provide additional support to the teachers at the Zambezi Sawmills Community school in Livingstone, Zambia. We have taught English and Maths at Grade 5 level. The experience with the children is unique and rich. A lot of freedom is allowed to manage lessons and marking during the classes.

It would have been appropriate to warn us it was holiday time, because the draft community for two weeks was really affected because of that. What little we were in the community was wonderful. The overall experience was amazing. The place, the animals, the team working in different areas in Antelope Park and the time shared with other volunteers was all great!

During my first week I was a bit nervous about the classes I would have to give during my second week, but when I look now back it was just amazing and the time flies away. The welcoming was very good, after a couple of days I felt really home and accepted. Further it is very nice to spend time with the other volunteers, even tough if it is just playing cards. I have so much during this short time.

I am happy having booked my volunteering at African Impact in Moshi. The experience at the projects was impressing. The students are always motivated and even it was sometimes challenging to teach them (because of their sometimes limited English) it worked. The staff is friendly and always there for you if you need help or advice. The volunteer community was socializing a lot and there is every week one organised event for socializing. The accommodation is simple but there is everything you need and for Tanzanian standard it was an excellent accommodation.

Better than expected

I spent 4 weeks on the teaching and community project in Zanzibar. I was quite surprised about the good living conditions in our African Impact house as I had expected the worst considering that I have never been to Africa before. The food was very international and the view from the balcony was amazing. It did not bother me to share my room with three other volunteers because this is the best way to make friends. About the program which was considered from most of the volunteers too overloaded, I did not really mind because volunteering is the reason why I came to Zanzibar in contradiction to others who made me feel like they were here to be tourists and spend their days at the beach. The staff was unfortunately quite distant and did not offer to do things together at the weekends for example.

I had a great time volunteering here in Zanzibar with African impact, The surroundings were beautiful and everyone in the village and the volunteers were so nice. I loved the teaching with the Kanga ladies and at Kidenga school with their English lessons, it was good to be here for their exams as you can see how hard they have worked and what it has all been for for! I was surprised to see how much the schedule changed during Ramadan and this does need to be made more clear when booking even at 3rd parties such as travel agents.

Volunteering for African Impact was very rewarding. It was hard being there as the only volunteer at the time but I couldn't have expected a better experience. Every project is different and addresses many different issues that the community faces and I am so glad that I was able to experience all of them. Gaining the experiences that I did in Tanzania are something that I could've never done as a tourist. I got to see Tanzania for what it was as an everyday citizen and I am so thankful that I was accepted into the community and allowed to help where I could.

Volunteering with African Impact has taught me more than I could have imagined. I have grown to love the class I was teaching and extremely sad to leave them. Each week brought new challenges to face due to unforeseen circumstances, but they were welcomed as it was a good experience. The management team was also there backing me up 100% asking if there was anything I needed them to do. Although teaching every morning was without a doubt my favourite, I really enjoyed the afternoon projects as well. It truly felt like you were impacting peoples lives for the better.

I have been on the Kids & Lions program for six weeks, i am really glad that i chose this program, because it was a good combination between the community program, and the lions. I think the community program it pretty good organized, and the staff was good at their job, so I learned a lot from the work, and i feel like I made a different i some of the places we went to. The Drop in center was a highlight, and i really liked being there two times a week, and it was there I felt like i did make the most different. The social life in the park is amazing, and i have met so many nice people from many different countries. It is a really social place to be at, and i have made many new friends. The food we got here at the park was always very good, the only thing I would complain about is that it have happen many times that it was not enough food for everybody, or that when we got back from community, that they didn't know that we were coming back. So the communication was not always on top. And one last thing that i want to comment on, is that the internet is really expensive. I think maybe it would be better to charge for like one or two weeks of internet, not MB.

Very easy and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The staff became more a family than a boss-like hierachy. I wouldn't worry about not fitting in. The staff are very flexible to your ideas and many of the ideas come from the volunteers but are guided by the staff. Which is important.

I voulunteered in Moshi with African Impact for 1 month and it was too short. It was the best experience abroad in my whole life. I got to experience a new country in a way no turist can. Being a part of the community, being welcomed with a big smile and being appreciated is the best feeling in the world. I got to teach members of the Maasai tribe to read and write in swahiili witch to me was one of the best highlights. They are just a bunch of lovley people! I also taught english to kinds between the ages 2 - 5 and they are just adorable and full of energy! If you are in doubt, GO! I would strongly recommend this program to anyone!!! It was nzuri nzuri nzuri sana!
