Take part in a volunteer project in breathtaking Sri Lanka, working with turtles on one of the many beautiful beaches and becoming immersed in the local culture. Three days each week, volunteers work in the hatchery, which is about an hour away from the volunteer villa. Tasks include feeding and cleaning the turtles, moving turtle eggs into the hatching area, caring for disabled turtles, cleaning tanks and more. One day a week is Environment Day, where volunteers will take part in beach cleaning activities in Galle.

Our Monastery volunteer program in Nepal or Sri Lanka is a truly unique teaching experience. You will teach a group of young monk students from various background Englishskills. The monks living in the monastery belong to the families whose faith is Buddhism. Often the children are from the poor families from the mountainous regions of Nepal. The monastery provides the young monks with accommodation, meals and education. Additionally, being in the monastery young monks also learn and study Buddhism and perform various rituals. A lot of monks are keen to learn English as part of their education but many monastery lack the funding required for skilled English Teachers. These monk children are only provided limited time a day of English teaching from government teachers, most of which are not well equipped in teaching the subject, and thus very little development takes place. Hence, there is a great need for skilled English-speaking volunteers to teach them the basics of the language and provide them with much-needed confidence that comes with a better understanding of the outside world.

Out of 7 species of turtles that live in the world, 5 of those species live in the Indian Ocean. You will be helping to care for four different species of turtles– Loggerhead (the rarest), Hawksbill, Green, and Olive Ridley. There are around 30 disabled or wounded turtles living in the centre, and the centre also hatches hundreds of turtle eggs in a separate facility, which will be released to the ocean. With your help, the project aims to allow these incredible animals to survive in a safe and healthy environment. Sea Turtles are known to live for around 150 years. PLEASE NOTE: A mandatory culture week in Kandy is required for the first week of this program. The transfer from Kandy to the Turtle project in Ambalangoda is not covered in the program fee.
