Prepare for Volunteer Abroad
Set Goals
Setting clear goals will make your volunteer experience more meaningful and focused. Consider your objectives and what drives you to volunteer:
- Personal growth: What new skills or experiences are you looking to gain?
- Impact goals: How do you hope to contribute to your chosen community or cause?
- Cultural exchange: How will you engage with and learn from local South African communities?
By establishing your priorities, you’ll ensure a fulfilling and well-rounded volunteer experience.
Understand the Benefits
South Africa offers numerous benefits for international volunteers, including opportunities for personal and professional growth:
- Cultural immersion: Gain a deeper understanding of South Africa’s diverse cultures, languages, and histories.
- Wildlife experience: Work closely with endangered species or conservation programs unique to South Africa.
- Career skills: Develop transferable skills such as leadership, communication, and problem-solving.
- Community contribution: Make a difference in areas of education, healthcare, or conservation that deeply impact local lives.
Things to Know
Before setting out, make sure you’re aware of these key points:
- Visa requirements: Check if you need a visa and for how long, based on your nationality and length of stay.
- Cost of living: Living costs can vary; create a realistic budget for accommodations, meals, and excursions.
- Weather: South Africa has diverse climates, so check the weather for your specific location and season.
Local safety: Research local safety guidelines and always follow the recommendations of your volunteer program.
Choose a Location
South Africa’s varied regions each offer unique volunteering experiences and cultural opportunities. Here are three top cities for volunteers:
Cape Town
Known for its iconic Table Mountain, Cape Town combines natural beauty with urban attractions. It’s a great base for volunteers interested in community work, education, and youth programs. Cape Town’s dynamic blend of cultures, art, and history make it an inspiring and enriching environment for volunteers.
Johannesburg
As South Africa’s economic hub, Johannesburg is ideal for volunteers interested in urban development, education, and health initiatives. The city is vibrant with history and offers easy access to sites like the Apartheid Museum, providing a deep cultural context for volunteers working in social impact fields.
Port Elizabeth
This coastal city is known for its beautiful beaches and is a key destination for marine conservation and environmental programs. Volunteers passionate about animal welfare and coastal preservation will find rewarding opportunities in Port Elizabeth’s numerous conservation projects, plus a laid-back city vibe.
Choose a Cause
South Africa has a variety of causes for volunteers to support, from environmental to community-focused initiatives.
Wildlife Conservation
South Africa is home to extraordinary biodiversity, including endangered species. Volunteer programs in wildlife conservation allow you to work with animals like rhinos, lions, and elephants, playing an active role in preserving South Africa’s natural heritage.
Education & Youth Development
Many communities in South Africa benefit from educational support and resources. Volunteer in schools or youth centers to help improve educational access, assist with tutoring, and support life-skills programs that empower local youth.
Community Health
Healthcare initiatives in South Africa often rely on volunteers to support community health programs, especially in rural areas. Working in community health provides hands-on experience, helping with public health education, HIV awareness, and general medical support.

Frequently Asked Questions
How to volunteer in South Africa
It’s simple enough to volunteer in South Africa. Think about what kind of skills you have and what you can offer as a volunteer in South Africa. This will help you narrow down suitable programs. You can apply for volunteer programs in South Africa online, and once accepted, you’ll pay program fees and book your flight, as long as you’re eligible for the proper visa (see below).
Where to volunteer in South Africa
Popular places where volunteers are needed in South Africa include Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Kruger National Park. If you’re interested in conservation and environmental volunteering, the latter will be your best bet! Check out Cape Town and Johannesburg for projects in community development and education.
Do you need a visa to volunteer in South Africa?

This experience changed my life for the best!
August 19, 2026by: Jimena Amaro Cordova - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
My internship at the Salesian Institute Youth Projects pushed me far beyond what I expected, taking me from supporting program logistics to independently running counseling sessions and managing my own client caseload within just a few months. I was trusted with real responsibility early on, from leading a group of 45 adult learners on my own to adapting a therapeutic intervention on short notice for an urgent client referral, and that trust taught me more about clinical work and resilience than I could have learned in a classroom. This experience confirmed that clinical psychology, particularly cross-cultural and community-based care, is exactly the path I want to pursue.

August 14, 2026by: Grace Inman - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
Connect-123 made my experience in Ireland truly incredible. From the beginning, they did an amazing job matching me with a company that fit my personality, interests, and career goals. I couldn’t have asked for a better internship experience. They also did a great job planning weekend trips around Ireland, giving me the opportunity to explore different parts of the country and make unforgettable memories along the way. Overall, Connect-123 made my time in Ireland an amazing experience both professionally and personally.
AMAZING
August 13, 2026by: Daniel Abdulla - United KingdomProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
I was, probably like some of you, a bit sceptical when initially applying due to the low price compared to other organisations. However, the experience I had was absolutely amazing and I have learnt so much about not only myself, but about different cultures and etiquettes. My program manager, Marissa, was absolutely fantastic at answer all of my questions and adjusting any mistakes I submitted onto my application such as flight number and pick-up time. Despite the huge time difference between Marissa and myself, she was able to reply to my email promptly and with extreme care - I was really at ease throughout the whole process and that made the experience a bunch better. Everything on my volunteering was as described on the program guide and there were no surprises when I landed, everything that happened during my week I was prepared for. I would really recommend this company and I want to thank them once more for the fantastic and truly life-changing experience they provided for me.
An unforgettable experience in Split!
August 12, 2026by: Nicole Boduch - AustriaProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
I had such a wonderful experience in Split! I met so many amazing people from different countries and made memories that I will definitely never forget. The Youth Support program gave me the opportunity to connect with the local community, experience a different culture and grow personally at the same time. The local team was very welcoming and supportive and I always felt comfortable asking questions or getting help when needed. I especially loved the international atmosphere and meeting people with completely different backgrounds and stories.besides volunteering, I had enough time to explore Split, enjoy the beautiful beaches and nature and experience Croatian culture. This experience helped me step outside my comfort zone, become more independent and see things from new perspectives. I’m really grateful for all the people I met and everything I experienced during my time here. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone who wants to travel, volunteer, meet new people and create unforgettable memories abroad. ❤️

Best experience ever!
August 07, 2026by: Victoria Marcene - BrazilThe experience of volunteering at Daktari was incredible. The discipline of sticking to a schedule, caring for the animals, and supporting the children during lessons is something truly special. Although my time here was short, those days were excellent. The environment is comfortable, the food is delicious, the other volunteers are welcoming, the educational system is highly efficient, and the animals are very well cared for. I thank the company Exchange do Bem for providing this experience with full support and guidance, and I also thank the Daktari family for welcoming me and teaching me so much during these seven days of volunteering.

July 31, 2026by: Gabrielle Ortiz - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
My internship has been the best experience I could have ever asked for. My co-workers are what made my time there so memorable. Connect-123 made the entire process smooth and easy, especially Antonella and Xena. They were both so kind, supportive, and helpful every step of the way. I’m so grateful I got to meet my program group, it was truly an amazing experience!
Preparation before trip
July 30, 2026by: Yuange LiuProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
The preparation before trip was so detailed that I don’t have anything to worry about. It got everything listed and made it so much easier to tick off what I’ve done and what they need. The communication with the manager for the volunteer was so smooth and fast, and I was able to get a reply current evening or next morning (due to different timing in different countries). I wanted to change my volunteer from rural teaching to turtle reservation, it was so fast that there wasn’t any problems with the money nor arrangements, everything just went so smoothly, really impressed. The local team there really helped a lot, the driver, the leader, everyone was just so nice, even the cook and the receptionist. This volunteer as itself also helped me a lot on raising awareness for the sea turtles, learnt a lot and really hope to help them consistently. This is such a memorable trip and I hope to do these volunteers with IVHQ next summer with my friends.
An absolute joy and priviledge
July 23, 2026by: NICK MEDFORTH - United KingdomI have been home for a couple of weeks now and I still can't stop thinking about my time at Daktari. Despite only a 2 week stay it has had a profound affect on me - amazing team, inspirational animals and unforgetable children. This is a mature organisation that knows what it is doing and enables volunteers to have impact at numerous levels; caring for orphaned animals, teaching and inspiring local children whilst contributing to wildlife conservation and the future of South Africa. Added bonus - Daktari is located in a stunning part of the world with an abundance of wildlife and some of the friendliest people you could meet. I would fully recommend to anyone considering volunteering or contributing in other ways. Might see you there next time!

My Experience in Ireland
July 20, 2026by: Christian Baez-Guigni - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
As my time in Ireland comes to a close, I want to thank Connect-123 for partnering with Bucknell University to provide students like me with an opportunity like this. As an undergraduate, it can often feel stressful trying to gain relevant work experience while preparing for your future career. Thanks to Connect-123, I was placed with a company in a field aligned with my career goals, allowing me to grow professionally while exploring a new part of the world. This experience has given me valuable workplace experience, unforgettable memories, and a greater appreciation for living and working abroad. Thank you for making it possible!

So incredible
July 20, 2026by: Valorie Radel - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
This experience has been nothing short of incredible. I will forever be grateful for this opportunity. My internship could not have been a more perfect match. I have gained not only new skills but also a new perspective as well. Outside of the internship, exploring this beautiful city has been so fun. Carla, the program coordinator, is one of the most amazing people I have ever had the privilege of meeting. She planned the most fun activities for our group and was truly invested in our well-being!

Living in Ireland
July 17, 2026by: Benjamin Pearcy - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
Following this program was a unique experience that I will never forget. I thought it gave a great balance of working at my internship, meeting new people, and exploring the new country. The opportunities each weekend gave great insights and experiences to explore outside of where we were staying and i highly recommend going to each one.
Volunteering
July 14, 2026by: Sophia Riveiro - BrazilProgram: #1Buffelsdrift Eco Ambassador Program | South Africa
Volunteering was an incredible experience! I was able to learn a lot about conservation and what it takes to keep everything running smoothly. I learned a lot about the local species and got to see them quite often. Everyone on the project is super friendly and welcoming,I felt right at home, and they were always looking out for our well-being! I definitely recommend this project to anyone who’s interested.
Beyond the volunteering, I was lucky enough to have amazing experiences like watching a giraffe be released, vulture feedings, as well as making great memories with the staff and my fellow volunteers.
July 03, 2026by: Alexander Parillo - United StatesMy volunteering experience with African Conservation Experience involved spending a month at Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre as an intern on the Wildlife Rehabilitation Placement. As soon as I arrived, it was clear that Moholoholo is an amazing place filled with passionate staff who are all dedicated to helping wildlife. During my time on the project, I was able to learn new skills and techniques for animal care and husbandry. I had such a variety of experiences, not only through conversations with the staff, but also in the hands-on experience I was able to do as well. Whether it was how to hold an owl during routine medical examinations, proper procedures for quarantine and animal releases, or new and interesting enrichment activities for animals. Beyond the volunteering, I was lucky enough to have amazing experiences like watching a giraffe be released, vulture feedings, as well as making great memories with the staff and my fellow volunteers. The sanctuary is also located beneath a beautiful mountain that is never tiring to wake up to, in addition to being near a small town with plenty of shops. The time I spent volunteering at Moholoholo is one of the most fulfilling and enriching experiences of my life. The work can be tiring, but for anyone and everyone who is interested in learning the correct and modern methods for wildlife conservation and care (or simply wishes to do work that directly helps wildlife), Moholoholo, with its knowledgeable and dedicated staff, is absolutely the best place to visit and volunteer.
Unforgettable
July 03, 2026by: Nick Medforth - United KingdomDaktari is unforgettable in so many ways. It has been an absolute joy and pleasure to work with the team, children and animals. This is a unique volunteer project because it combines teaching local children about life skills, environment and conservation with hands on animal care. Everything is well planned with supportive project coordinators. The best part is seeing the learning and developing confidence in the children. I would fully reccomend. 5 stars!

More Than a Trip: A Life-Changing Experience in Jamaica
June 23, 2026by: Steph Cink - United StatesProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
My Jamaica experience was great because it allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone, connect with new people, and make meaningful memories while serving others. I loved being able to learn about the culture, build relationships with the local community, and see the impact that small acts of kindness can have. The experience challenged me to grow in my faith, gratitude, and appreciation for the opportunities I have. It was rewarding to work alongside others who shared the same passion for helping people and creating a positive difference. IVHQ does a great job of creating opportunities for volunteers to make a meaningful impact while also providing support and guidance throughout the experience. They help connect volunteers with local communities, organize programs, and make it possible for people to serve in a way that is safe and structured. I appreciated how they allowed us to experience the culture of Jamaica while still focusing on helping the community. Their organization made the trip feel purposeful and helped create an environment where volunteers could learn, serve, and grow.

The best experience! Once in a lifetime
June 20, 2026by: Adelle O’SullivanThe most incredible experience that will hold a special place in my heart and I would recommend to everyone. IVHQ is a great and trusted organisation that makes a volunteering trip easier to plan, book and experience! From start to finish , IVHQ provide support, checklists, guidance on what’s best and training; the training really enables you to know what to expect when landing in your volunteering country! The information provided on the programmes are precise and they ensure that there’s local support on the ground when you arrive! Would definitely recommend!
