What inspired you to travel abroad?
I wanted to make a difference in wildlife conservation while getting to experience a new culture. Going abroad allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and immerse myself in hands-on conservation work. Being surrounded by incredible big cats and other rescued animals while contributing to their care and rehabilitation was an opportunity and experience I could not miss.
Why did you choose the Wildlife Volunteer in South Africa program?
I was drawn to the Wild Cat Project in Kimberley because of its strong commitment to wildlife conservation and hands-on volunteer involvement. It allows direct engagement with animal care, rehabilitation, and conservation research.
I am glad I chose this program. I was able to work with passionate conservationists who taught me how to combat unethical practices like canned hunting and breeding for tourism.

Exploring the wildlife
What was your favorite part about South Africa?
South Africa’s Free State region was stunning, from its beautiful landscapes to its deep connection to wildlife, it felt unreal in all the best ways. I was able to wake up each morning to the sounds of lions and other animals. However, what stuck with me most was their love for nature and wildlife, which is reflected in their strong conservation efforts. The team was incredibly welcoming, sharing their knowledge and traditions, which made me feel comfortable and immersed in the local culture.
What made your experience abroad extraordinary?
The ability to work so closely with big cats and other wildlife was the most extraordinary part of my experience. From feeding lions to helping with medical care for injured animals, every day brought something new. As I learned about conservation methods, I was also building friendships with fellow volunteers and local staff, which created a sense of community and made the experience even more meaningful.
How did the local staff support you throughout your program?
The staff was incredibly supportive and provided guidance on animal care, conservation techniques, and safety measures. They were always excited to answer questions and made sure volunteers were comfortable and engaged. Their knowledge and passion for wildlife conservation were truly inspiring, and they made sure we felt comfortable and confident in our work, which made the experience both educational and impactful.

What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time in Kimberley, South Africa?
I wish I had the opportunity to extend my stay. The experience was so immersive, and I felt like I was just getting into the rhythm of the program when it was time to leave. Staying longer would have allowed me to gain deeper insights into conservation research and participate in more long-term projects, such as monitoring animal behavior over time.
Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.
Mornings began early with breakfast and a team briefing, followed by feeding and caring for the animals. After that, we would clean enclosures, prepare food, or assist in conservation research. The afternoons were dedicated to projects, such as habitat improvement or giving educational tours to visitors. Evenings often included a final check-in on the animals, followed by dinner, and were spent relaxing and socializing with fellow volunteers.
What did you enjoy doing in your free time while on the program?
During my free time, I loved exploring the sanctuary and watching the animals. Many evenings were spent soaking in the wonderful and stunning African sunsets. The weekends were great for unwinding, either by relaxing, socializing with other volunteers, or joining a trip to Kimberley for shopping and sightseeing.
What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?
I stayed in a shared volunteer house located right within the project grounds. The accommodation was comfortable, with all the necessary amenities, including a kitchen and bathrooms. The best part was how close we were to nature. Most nights, I would fall asleep to the sounds of wildlife, which was an unforgettable experience. The volunteer house was also a safe and secure space where we could relax after a long day.
