Human Rights Volunteer Program in Guatemala

Based in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, we’ve spent years building deep, trusted relationships with a strong network of grassroots human rights organisations in the region. Our work is led by the needs of these organisations, meaning volunteers are matched with projects where they are genuinely wanted and where their contribution can make a real difference. We take the time to understand your goals, skills, and reasons for volunteering, then thoughtfully connect you with organisations working on a range of human rights challenges, including women’s rights and gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, indigenous representation, youth empowerment, and migration. When matching volunteers, we consider your Spanish level, time commitment, and experience; some roles need Spanish or specific skills, others don’t; some organisations prefer longer stays, while others welcome short-term support; some placements simply need passion and commitment. As a volunteer, you’ll gain hands-on experience supporting community programmes, contributing to advocacy initiatives, and collaborating with local leaders, while amplifying community voices and helping create meaningful, lasting impact on the ground.

Volunteer with UPAVIM and support our mission to empower the women of La Esperanza, a neighborhood on the outskirts of Guatemala City. Contribute to initiatives that promote economic opportunities, enabling these women to provide for their families’ needs. You also help improve the quality of life for the entire community. Over the past 33 years, UPAVIM has grown from a small baby-weighing program to a women's cooperative employing over 100 local women and making handmade fairtrade crafts sold around the world. The proceeds from these crafts pay the women's salaries, as well as fund UPAVIM's community health clinic and school. The school offers a daycare, pre-school, and elementary school (K-6th grade). UPAVIM also manages the first public library in the neighborhood. Here, we offer free English classes and tutoring for all ages. We operate a bakery and a soy factory to provide the community with fresh and affordable goods. Are you interested in volunteering in Guatemala? Inquire today to get more information.

Life Shifting Experience

Volunteering with International Volunteer HQ alongside the incredible team at my placement in Kenya has been one of the most humbling and grounding experiences of my life. I arrived thinking I was coming to give time, energy, skills, support. What I didn’t expect was how much I would receive in return. Every day here has been a reminder of the power of dignity, resilience, and community. I have witnessed strength that doesn’t shout, hope that doesn’t give up, and kindness that shows up even when resources are limited. The people at the women's education placement lead with heart, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting others not just for today, but for generations to come. This experience has slowed me down in the best possible way. It has invited me to listen more deeply, to be present, and to remember that real impact starts with human connection. The smiles, the conversations, the shared moments they stay with you. They change you. I am deeply grateful to IVHQ for creating a bridge that allows volunteers like me to step into meaningful, respectful, community-led work. And I am endlessly thankful to my placement in Kenya for welcoming me with open arms and trusting me to be part of their story, even for a short time. This is not a trip I will “return from” unchanged. It is an experience I will carry forward into my work, my relationships, and how I show up in the world. Thank you for reminding me that service is not about saving, it’s about standing beside, learning together, and honoring the shared humanity that connects us all.
