Program Overview

Dive into community service and a life-changing experience while volunteering with Local Hope Guatemala/Xela AID. Engage in cultural immersion and exchange as you work daily with our local staff and the local kids, adults, and seniors in our programs. Visit their homes, learn about their lives, and explore the local area.

We'll help put your talents and interests to work, training and giving you the flexibility to lend a hand in one or more of our programs that empower self-reliance, including:
• Montessori Preschool
• Study Center
• Computer Lab
• Special Needs
• Medical, Dental, or Optometry Clinics
• Sports
• Food Insecurity
• Leadership Training
• Adult Literacy
• Environmental Issues
• Senior Services
• ESL

Your two-week (or longer) all-inclusive trip includes:
• Accommodation and three meals daily at our Eco-Guest House
• Transportation to/from Quetzaltenango
• Monday–Friday volunteer immersion
• Curated cultural experiences
• “Discovery Saturday” excursions

A portion of your program fee directly supports Local Hope Guatemala (known in Guatemala as “Xela AID”), a 34-year-old non-profit that empowers families and communities to be healthy, educated and self-reliant.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to all the most common questions about Local Hope Guatemala.

Do you offer other volunteer service trips that are not all-inclusive?

Yes. We offer a “Volunteer in Guatemala - Build-Your-Own” trip, allowing you to create your own personalized itinerary. Along with volunteer service, it includes activities and meal options you can customize to your needs. The base fee is $64 per room/night, accommodating up to three people and serving breakfast for two persons. This is the perfect solution for those who would like to build their own trip or lead a group (1-12 rooms).

Where do volunteers live?

Volunteers stay at our eco-lodge, Eco-Guest House. It features spacious, comfortable, and well-appointed rooms and bathrooms, with hot running water and full-pressure hot showers, soft towels, in-room electric heaters, amazing views of the mountains and fields, and Wi-Fi. Eco-Guest House has 12 rooms and is located within the Xela AID complex, which has elevators in each building -- making it accessible to all.

Can children and seniors join this volunteer service trip?

Yes! We welcome volunteers of all ages. Everyone has skills and interests they can share with the villagers, who range from young children to seniors. Volunteering with Local Hope Guatemala is more than service. It's also a profoundly enriching experience involving cultural immersion and exchange.

Will I have free time and what activities are available?

Yes, volunteers have free time. There is plenty to see and experience, such as hiking around the sacred Lake Chicabál in the volcano crater, taking hot baths at Las Georginas, set in a lush forest, and a visit to the nearby, colorful, colonial city of Quetzaltenango. We offer a guided tour (for an additional fee) of the magnificent Lake Atitlán and Panajachel, featuring twin volcanoes, breathtaking scenery, and a vibrant marketplace.

Does the program offer special optional activities?

Yes! You can book one or more of the following:

  • Practice for Spanish Speakers 2 – $39
  • Introduction to Back-Strap Weaving – $100
  • Build and Deliver a Chicken Coop – $117
  • Authentic Mayan "Day Keeping" Ceremony – $145
  • Guided Tour to Sacred Lake Chicabál – $60
  • Authentic In-Home Experience – $15
