Since 2009, the organization has been operating in La Hesperia Cloud Forest Reserve. This is an area of unique significance to cloud forest conservation. It is the meeting point of two of South America’s biodiversity hotspots and home to an incredible number of endemic species. They conduct long-term research on specific species to identify important habitats to protect and develop sustainable farming practices. They also function in a number of advocacy and community outreach capacities. As a participant in this program, you’ll help maintain and develop their various research projects. The organization tends to have a few different projects in operation, so there's great scope for a variety of work. You could be setting camera traps to study large cats or capuchins, working on sustainable chocolate production initiatives, or assisting with other projects. THE CHALLENGE In rural Ecuador, limited resources lead to poor education: 1 in 10 are illiterate, and only 24% finish middle school. Few speak English. With 40% of the population in poverty, English can open opportunities such as tourism. We’ve seen strong demand for our weekly classes—some walk over an hour to attend—but a lasting solution must be more regular and accessible. THE SOLUTION We’re seeking interns eager to apply their English teaching, TEFL, or TESOL skills in five nearby communities. You’ll get support from our team to visit schools, meet teachers, design programs, and deliver engaging lessons mainly for children. Gain hands-on experience while making a real difference and creating a brighter future. OUR METHODOLOGY Our internships use Design Thinking to co-create solutions with local partners. You’ll learn to observe, ideate, and prototype in real contexts, building skills while driving sustainable change. Learn Spanish in group classes and volunteer in one of many projects in the city of Cuenca in Ecuador with The National Registration Center for Study Abroad. Each week, volunteers will attend Spanish lessons for 20 hours. The maximum number of students in each class is five. Group classes are organized in such a way that each will always consists of students with the same level of Spanish proficiency. Each class is 55 minutes in length. To get the maximum benefit from the Spanish course, beginner students must spend four to 12 weeks studying the language, while intermediate and advanced students must spend two to 12 weeks in classes. After at least a week of Spanish lessons, volunteers will be placed in community volunteering projects in the afternoons for at least four weeks. Placement opportunities include teaching English to primary school students, helping senior citizens in their daily routine, assisting the homeless, and serving as tour guides in national parks and reserves.

CFHI’s Intensive Beginner Spanish Programs are unique in that participants begin with service-learning placements rather than clinical rotations. In this program, receive increased Spanish language instruction in preparation for entering healthcare settings. Over the course of 4 weeks, take 40 hours of intensive beginner Spanish classes focusing on basic grammar and conversation. In the mornings, participate in a community engagement project and learn about the cultural and social context of Quito. The last two weeks, focus on practicing Spanish skills during clinical rotations at local healthcare facilities such as community level clinics on the outskirts of the city serving low-income populations, or government hospitals delivering free high-level diagnostic, specialized, and emergency care. Other rotations include a public maternity hospital where high-risk pregnancies are managed, and a military hospital focusing on internal medicine and surgery. Participants will come away with more confidence communicating in Spanish within social and professional settings, as well as a holistic view of healthcare systems in Quito and how Ecuadorians access these services.

Its natural, cultural diversity and Inca heritage appeal to many volunteers. Despite tremendous economic progress, Ecuadorians are still working to reduce poverty and the standard of living. The Ceiba Foundation offers a variety of internships in conservation, research, education, and community development. These internships are a great way to combine your academic background with hands-on field experience.
