Volunteer with Local NGOs in Cambodia

IVHQ’s local organization cooperates with a network organization including 30+ local NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and other Cambodian towns, focusing on community & rural development, democracy development & gender issues. The organizations support the poorest of the poor & those who have become landless, offering capacity building opportunities & organizing advocacy for the reconstruction of the country. Local NGOs usually have very limited (if any) financial resources, & often struggle to run their programs & to raise funds from international donors. Many staff members are volunteers receiving no (or a very small) salary. All NGOs urgently need support in areas such as fundraising & proposal writing, organizational development, administration & research. For volunteers studying at a university it would be more of an internship experience as some professional development workers support some of our placements. Placements are offered in the following fields: Community development, Health/ HIV/Aids awareness, prevention & rehabilitation, Women & Child issues, Advocacy & Human Rights Issues, Environmental Issues, and Education.

The Globalteer Cambodia Community Project is located in the town of Siem Reap, near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat. The program works with carefully selected independent partner projects in and around the city. We also work with projects that develop sustainable agricultural programs for their communities as well as with a specialist clean drinking water project that drills wells for some of the poorest villagers in the region and installs highly effective water filters to prevent the spread of often serious and sometimes fatal water-borne diseases. The program focuses on the poor and vulnerable, helping them and their families to establish long-term solutions to their needs through education, healthcare, nutrition, and income generation.

Volunteer as an English Teacher at our NGO for Poor Children

New Dream of Cambodian Children Organization (NDCCO) is a non-profit organization in Phneachey Village, on the outskirts of Siem Reap. NDCCO was founded in 2014 and was registered as an official NGO in 2018 with the government of Cambodia under number 2197. We provide free education, school meals, and community support to underprivileged children and families from our partner communities. We believe education is a key factor in the fight against poverty and that every child has the unalienable right to access quality basic education. NDCCO has an approach that emphasizes sustainable education. We work with the local village chief to target families in most need, offering them a place at the school. Most jobs in Siem Reap are in the hospitality services; thus, the ability to communicate in English is required to access employment. By providing free English lessons to underprivileged kids, we offer them greater employment opportunities. With the help of volunteers, we deliver lessons five days a week to over 230 kids from 6 to 17 years old.

A week’s volunteering

I volunteered here for a week back in April while travelling. It was one of the most rewarding things I did on my whole trip, and I wish I could’ve stayed longer! The kids are an absolute joy and Kim and Jack are just amazing people. I have recommended NDOCCC to multiple people since going who have gone on to volunteer here, and am continuing to recommend it to anyone travelling in the area. Lots of love.
