Volunteer in a Community Soup Kitchen in Buenos Aires

This Community Soup Kitchen is located in Villa 21, a large and unstable housing settlement south of Buenos Aires. It mostly lacks paved roads and sewerage; many houses are made of perishable materials and have no running water or drainage. The neighborhood faces serious health problems, as it is located on a creek that divides the capital city of the province. The creek itself is highly contaminated, causing respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases that primarily affect children. The soup kitchen is visited by approximately 50 people from the neighborhood for breakfast and lunch every day. They can eat at the soup kitchen, but most of them take food back home to share with their families, reaching up to 200 people. The soup kitchen is also part of a Community Center that tries to help the unprivileged population from this area. They work with families and children, from infants to 3 years old, supporting them in their growing and development process together with a team of professionals and social workers. This Community Center was founded in 1994 and began as a soup kitchen until it expanded into a kindergarten with the help of mothers from the area.

More than volunteering: A life-changing family in Argentina

February 27, 2026by: Fabio Castellini - Italy

Program: Volunteer with Engineering Without Borders Argentina

I first connected with Ingeniería Sin Fronteras Argentina in 2016, and even before landing in the country, I felt welcomed like family. This organization is a fantastic, inclusive, and transparent environment with a clear, inspiring mission: to make the world a better place, one brick at a time, literally! For nearly three years, my Saturdays with them were the highlight of my week. Even now, back in my home country, I find myself reminiscing about our 8:00 AM meetups at Plaza Constitución to catch the 148 bus to Quilmes. I miss the hard work on-site, the 'hands-on' approach, and the incredible feeling of seeing what collective effort can build from the ground up. Above all, I miss the people. While I’ve stayed in touch with many of them, the daily camaraderie was unique. It was a truly beautiful experience that I wish I could replicate here at home. I highly recommend ISF Argentina to anyone looking for a meaningful, grassroots volunteering experience. It will change your perspective as much as it changes the community.
