Holistic Community Outreach in Uganda

The Real Uganda's volunteers assist our partners with a variety of empowering community-based activities. Volunteers split their time between these locally requested interventions: Public health and clinical work: Volunteers work in rural clinics providing testing, treatment, counseling services, and prevention education. Nutrition, vegetable gardening, and community sanitation programs are also ongoing. We aim to support rural public health in Uganda. Teaching and childcare: Volunteers work in rural classrooms, choosing what ages and topics to teach. Art and sport are the most popular. Traditional teaching in Uganda is rote learning and memorization. We aim to encourage teamwork, fun, creativity, literacy, and general knowledge in primary schools. Organic farming: Volunteers work alongside women and community members to maintain gardens. Depending on the season, volunteers prepare the soil, plant seeds, spread mulch, weed, harvest, and chase birds and other pests. Learn from Ugandan farmers, and share your ideas as well. We aim to teach efficient land use, organic pest control, and nutrition.

Savannah Conservation Volunteering, Eswatini (Swaziland)

Experience hands-on field research related to the conservation of savannah ecosystems in the Kingdom of Eswatini (formerly called Swaziland). Although savannahs are well-represented in African conservation areas, they are subjected to increasing degradation as a result of human influences, including land use and climate change. Well known for large charismatic game such as elephants, rhinos, and lions, there are a variety of smaller species that are threatened and are arguably more critical to the functioning of savannahs. Depending on priorities and active studies at the time of participation, volunteers may study vegetation, bats, hyenas, small predators (like mongoose, genets, and jackal), rodents, ungulates (such as giraffe and antelope), reptiles, birds, and other plant and animal life in Eswatini’s Lubombo Conservancy. They will examine the interface among commercial agriculture, rural communities, and protected areas in this Southern African region and learn from our experienced conservationists. They will be based at our Savannah Research Centre and camp in the private Mbuluzi Game Reserve, working at the Mlawula Nature Reserve and Hlane Royal National Park located nearby.

Teaching, Women Empowerment, Medical & Wildlife Volunteering

Volunteering Journeys programs in South Africa are highly sought after, offering a wide range of opportunities—from English teaching and coaching sports to medical electives to animal and wildlife conservation projects, including work with the Big 5. These programs are well-suited for gap year students, families, and anyone seeking an adventure-driven volunteer experience. One of the key attractions of volunteering in South Africa is the variety of additional activities available, allowing you to explore while making a meaningful contribution. Known as the “Rainbow Nation,” the country earned its name through decades of struggle to overcome apartheid and institutionalized racial discrimination. While apartheid has ended, South Africa continues to face challenges such as economic inequality, gender-based violence, and illegal wildlife trade. Our placements are designed to help address these ongoing issues. As with many developing nations, there remains a strong need for dedicated volunteers to support both short- and long-term humanitarian and animal welfare goals. Programs are based in Cape Town, with wildlife conservation opportunities located in Kruger National Park.

Program: Volunteer at a Rhino Orphanage in UNESCO World Heritage Site

9

I first came across African Conservation Experience (ACE) when I read a testimonial on their website that said, “just do it, you won’t regret it”, and that’s exactly what I did. I knew I was with the right organisation when that first phone call was made, the staff took time to make sure I found the project that was right for me! My passion for rhinos made the Golola Rhino Orphanage And Rehabilitation Centre the obvious pick. Travelling alone seemed daunting, but the staff in the UK and South Africa put all my worries aside, making sure I was safe and always a phone call away. Arriving at the project was amazing. The team at Golola are 100% committed to taking care of the precious rhinos, and I felt privileged to be part of that. I learned so much working alongside them and appreciated their patience and sharing their invaluable knowledge with me. Because of this project, these amazing, beautiful rhinos who were brought in as babies are now thriving and given the best level of care and even going on to reproduce, which is wonderful, especially at a time when rhino populations are declining. I have booked my fourth trip with ACE, so I think that says it all!
