The second semester unfolds in Africa, with time split between Cape Town, South Africa, and Lilongwe, Malawi. Tanzania is home to diverse wildlife, from charismatic lions and elephants to thunderous herds of wildebeest and zebras. Spend a semester exploring national parks and savannas, observing these wild creatures up close and learning about their ecology and behavior. Meet members of local Maasai, Iraqw, and Hadzabe tribal communities to learn about their long-standing cultures and traditions and collaborate with residents to address human-wildlife conflict and other environmental issues. Finish the semester with an in-depth field research project on wildlife management, community livelihoods, and sustainability. SFS students live and study at the Center for Wildlife Management Studies. Known locally as “Moyo Hill Camp” and surrounded by Tanzania’s world-famous national parks and wildlife, it’s the perfect base camp for expeditions into the field. The Community, Activism, and Social Entrepreneurship (CASE) Program is a funded, 8-day guided program in Tunisia specifically for students of 2-year institutions and 2-year or similar non-baccalaureate degree programs at 4-year institutions. They will be introduced to the world of advocacy and civil society organizations in and around Tunis through daily presentations, panel discussions, engagement with local peers, tours, and community service. They will engage with leading organizations, activists, and community leaders on topics like civic engagement, sustainability, race and indigeneity, gender, migration, and other critical global justice issues through Tunisian and North African lenses. Applicants must be: - U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. - Currently enrolled at a 2-year institution or seeking a 2-year degree or similar pre-baccalaureate degree program - Fully vaccinated for COVID-19, including at least 1 booster, at least 30 days before the program start date. Note: Knowledge of Arabic or French language is not required to participate in this program. All program activities will be conducted in English.

Travel to Namibia, Africa, with Cincinnati Zoo and Miami University instructors to join the Zoo's long-term partnership with the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF)—the global center of cheetah conservation worldwide. Ongoing research projects at CCF include radio tracking, cheetah physiology, ecosystem management, and the design of school and community programs in Namibia. Discover the power of inquiry to generate knowledge and inspire conservation. All students can investigate the local ecosystem, ask questions, collect data, and present conclusions. Inquiry investigations may include species behavioral studies, waterhole surveys, and full moon game counts. Before and following the field experience in Namibia, students will complete coursework via Dragonfly Workshops Web-Based Learning Community as they apply these experiences to their home institutions.
