In Cape Town, every day will be like a choose-your-own-adventure book: imagine hiking Lion's Head at sunset, strolling through the African market at Greenmarket Square, attempting to finish a Gatsby sandwich, visiting beaches, and more. We want you to feel at home in South Africa, so we do everything we can to help you integrate into life in the city. From housing to cultural events, our job is to make sure you have the most authentic study abroad experience possible. Cape Town is a great location to explore the realities, needs, and challenges related to urban sustainability and innovation because of its historical and socio-economic contexts. Community-based learning engagements allow for hands-on student learning. Coupled with our overnight field trip to Kruger National Park this program offers you a unique and highly local experience to explore a worldwide challenge.

What is the Sustainability & Innovation program?
The IES Abroad Cape Town Summer - Sustainability & Innovation program is a summer study abroad program where students learn about sustainability & innovation while experiencing the culture, history, and daily life of Cape Town through field trips, excursions, and relevant courses.
What types of courses are offered?
The Cape Town Summer - Sustainability & Innovation program offers coursework in sustainability & innovation, taught by IES Abroad faculty and/or local instructors. Students can often also enroll in courses at local partner universities to deepen their academic experience. You will enroll in two courses for a total of 6 credits.
What housing options are available?
You'll live in a private residence hall with IES Abroad, South African, and other international students. Students live in a furnished single room with a kitchenette, private bathroom, and a digital safe is provided. Living spaces are shared, and there is a gym on site. Internet access is available. Meals are not included.
What is unique about this program?
In this program, students will spend five sessions at the Sustainability Institute (located between Cape Town and Stellenbosch) working on community-based learning opportunities.
Since there are various ongoing projects at the institute, students will spend part of their time learning about conceptual approaches to sustainability that feature indigenous perspectives and community-centered approaches.
