Volunteering in Ghana!

December 06, 2014by: Kirsten Harris - Quebec City

Ghana is an extraordinary place! The people are generous, open-hearted, and helpful. Before volunteering there, I had not travelled to any African country. But now I know I'll surely go back to Ghana and also visit other countries. Working with the children at the school and the orphanage was a very wonderful experience. In each case, I was really able (after a couple of days of getting used to everything) to sink my teeth into the work, and the kids (and staff) were really great. I won't forget the smiles, enthusiasm and warmth from the kids...they were so appreciative of the smallest of gestures: holding a hand, giving a hug, making up a silly song, or just simply listening to them. This was my third time volunteering, and I always feel that I get more than I give. It is true of Ghana as well. Teaching English at the an elementary school and working some in an orphanage were wonderful insights into life in Ghana for some children and the challenges of poverty. Warm and hospitable, Ghanaians make you feel right at home! And the kids are simply the sweetest! In both environments, I felt I was adding something and was appreciated for my efforts. I spent most of my time in Kumasi, but I did get the opportunity to travel to the Cape Coast and Kakum National Park. All-in-all, volunteering in Ghana was truly an unforgettable experience.

My 2 weeks program was really changed my life. I helped in a primary school, helping the children reading English. The kids are amazing, the city is beautiful and I received all the support that I needed from the Love Volunteers team and from the local team also. It was Amazing!

Volunteering in Albania

I had never visited Albania before. In fact, the country had never been on my radar of travel destinations. But I'm so glad I thought outside of the box and took a volunteer opportunity there! I was in Boga, Albania, a little town of about 400 people situated in the northern part by the Albanian Alps. To say it was picturesque is an understatement. It was an absolutely beautiful place! Small and remote, it was a nice chance to see people living a totally sustainable lifestyle. It was a window into a lifestyle I knew nothing about. The people were warm and friendly and open to having someone visit their small town where they don't get many visitors. I taught English in the little schoolhouse there for about 3 weeks. The kids were enthusiastic and I was really impressed that they came during the summer after their farm chores. They taught me a lot about Albania and I was able to visit other areas farther north. I'm glad I went to see this little corner of the world and its people.

What inspired you to travel abroad?

I was inspired by the desire for helping disadvantaged children from other communities who need help in education and learning.

Traveling around the world can expand one’s perspective on life. I knew that being able to meet and interact with those who are living in completely different cultures, environments, and societies would open my mind to something I’d never experienced before. I was also called to go abroad because I wanted to use my skills to give back to a community, while at the same time experiencing the culture in a new way and learning the language more proficiently. That way, I would be gaining from the people I worked with, while they gained from me!

I had traveled quite a bit but I wanted to go somewhere and truly immerse myself into a different country, see a new way of life that wasn't in a book. And I wanted it to be somewhere fairly off the grid.
