Cetacean Research & Conservation in Montenegro

Are you fascinated by cetaceans—whales, dolphins, and porpoises? Our program offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the research and conservation of these incredible animals in the Mediterranean Sea. You can join for an internship or volunteer for 4 to 12 weeks, but we recommend a stay of at least 8 weeks to complete comprehensive training with the local organization. You'll learn valuable research skills, including GIS mapping, survey planning, and the use of software like Excel and R. You'll also gain hands-on experience in the field. Your tasks may include boat-based surveys to observe and photograph dolphins, collect data, perform photo-identification, and raise awareness among the public and stakeholders about marine conservation. This hands-on experience is perfect for students and graduates in marine biology or related fields, but it can also be done by anyone with a passion for marine life. The program provides an immersive experience in scientific fieldwork and marine conservation, while also allowing you to explore the natural beauty of Montenegro's coastline and national parks.

Montenegro Dolphin Research

Intern or volunteer in the Montenegro Dolphin Research (MDR), conducted in partnership with the Marine Mammals Research Association. This is the first long-term study of marine mammals in Montenegrin coastal waters. We aim to address questions about marine mammal abundance, distribution, and behavior as well as define critical habitats and investigate the impacts of major threats, ranging from tourism to seismic practices. Our wider attention focuses on promoting and implementing awareness initiatives targeted at the local community. This program is open to interns and volunteers. Joining our team allows individuals to gain both scientific and outreach skills they can practice in marine mammal research.

Life changing

I had the best time, making friends, future contacts and memories to last a lifetime! As well as being able to have the best time i really got to improve myself as a scientist and get hands on experience in the life of a true marine biologist. I could not recommend this enough to people who want to experience real life science and not just the fun stuff. I got to work whilst feeling like i was making a difference. The location couldn't be better with lots of opportunities to explore the country. It was the best six months of my life.
