A Guide to High School Programs Abroad in the Netherlands
Best Cities for Teens
The Netherlands is small (two New Jerseys!), but mighty. From famed tulips in rural Lisse to a bustling university in Utrecht, the recommendations we’ve got are boundless. Here are our top picks for everyone out there looking for high school abroad in the Netherlands.
Rotterdam. Not top of the tourist hit-list, and that’s why you’ll love it. Rotterdam offers the infrastructure, nightlife, and artscape of Amsterdam, on a local scale. Take a bike ride out of the city and into Kinderdijk, to check out those iconic windmills.
The Hague. Gearing up to major in global affairs or pre-law? This is your spot. Home to the International Court of Justice, no other city in the world has seen the trials that have happened here. If the royals are more your type of international news, the Hague is also the Dutch monarchs’ residency. Can you say celeb sightings?
Amsterdam. Ah, the glistening canals, charming bridges, and fairytale buildings. Plus, the art scene is unreal (hello, Van Gogh!) and the history is significant (Anne Frank’s house will leave you speechless). Become a true Hollander by trying raw herring, or indulging in Dutch fries. Forget calories—you’ll be biking everywhere.
Popular Program Types
While high school programs in the Netherlands are about school, they’ve got to be about the Netherlands, too! These are some things we’re (gently) pushing you to take advantage of:
Outdoor Education. This will sharpen your street smarts and self-confidence. Urban studies is a great field to undertake during your high school travel in the Netherlands. Why are those canals there? What’s the deal with those 18 windmills? Why does everyone bike? Here’s your chance to gain some knowledge.
Community Service & Volunteering. Home to the “World’s Court,” the Netherlands is the place for advocacy and a proponent of peace. There is no shortage of workshops, rallies, and fundraisers that delve into human rights.
Work Experience. Getting a head start on that resume (and career abroad)? Factoring work experience into your Netherlands high school exchange is a supreme opportunity. Loads of programs provide skills workshops where you can meet professionals and learn about their route to success.
Summer Programs. It makes sense that teen travel in the Netherlands happens most during summer. Be sure to check out your options—you can fit your study abroad experience in as short as two weeks or as long as three months!
Anticipated Costs
Costs of living in the Netherlands are probably a bit different from what you’re used to. Transportation is fairly cheap, and you’ll likely be part of a homestay, but food and sights tend to add up. Don’t forget the Dutch use the Euro, making your dollar a little less valuable. If you’re hoping to get some extra financial aid, check out fundraising sites such as FundMyTravel. This is a popular way to rally excitement and support from family and friends! Applying for scholarships is also an excellent way to pad your Netherlands high school experience.
Accommodations & Visas
Going abroad for high school is probably feeling like a pretty big adventure. Homestays are a great way to immerse in the Dutch culture as well as enjoy the comfort of a family setting. Some students prefer to share dorm-style housing with other expats, and that can be super fun, too! Your program will likely list your available options, so go with your gut about the kind of experience you’re looking for.
There’s a lot of variability when it comes to visa regulations and fees, depending on where you’re going, what you’re doing, and how long you’re staying. Americans and Canadians looking to enter Europe will absolutely need a visa, and there are loads of resources out there designed for the sole purpose of helping students obtain study visas. Be sure to check in with your Netherlands high school programs about requirements and fees, too—that tends to minimize your stress and they’re happy to do it. Also, don’t forget that the embassy websites are your friends!
GoAbroad’s Inside Scoop
You know how your parents’ generation is always talking about how the world is so different now? About all the opportunities you have? About how they might have done things differently? Getting your first taste of travel at a young age is pretty lucky; getting acquainted with full-on cultural immersion at a young age is an absolutely unbeatable privilege. There’s a lot of the world to see, so why not get started sooner? You’ll be more confident in yourself. You’ll be more competent in the world. You’ll be more excited about life. And you won’t look back with regrets.
The balance of living abroad and being a student is going to be an adjustment, don’t get us wrong. But life’s a balancing act, right? So our advice is to take advantage of every opportunity. Study when you can, relax with your host family when you can, hit up museums and clubs when you can—take it all in one step at a time. Just remember: learning isn’t only for the classroom.

1000% recommend
September 28, 2024by: Kyler W.Program: CIEE HS Summer Abroad: Diplomacy & Government in Amsterdam
I would definitely recommend this program or any CIEE program to someone looking to study abroad! My only slight hesitation is that it was very expensive, and for some people in my school or community it just might not be possible, but if someone I knew was looking for an opportunity regardless of price, I would 1000% reccomend.
An incredible, unforgettable experience!

I had an absolutely amazing time in the Netherlands! I stayed in Steenwijk, about two hours away from Amsterdam. My family was so kind and helpful and I met some amazing people! The first week I had an orientation program which was simply amazing. There were people from all over the globe who stayed with me in the hostel. It was like summer camp!
Best Month of my Life
November 01, 2023by: Anthony Diresta - United StatesBest month of my life, by far. The only word I can think of to describe this past summer is “unreal”. Nothing can compare to sipping tea at Kensington Palace, climbing the Arc de Triomphe and eating pastries atop the Eiffel Tower, sailing down Amsterdam's canals, visiting a giant German castle overlooking a stunning alpine lake, paragliding and whitewater rafting in the Swiss Alps, having brunch in a rotating restaurant on top of a nearly 3,000-meter-tall mountain, negotiating at an Italian leather market, relaxing at a gorgeous villa on a winery, exploring the Roman Colosseum, hiking in the beautiful Cinque Terre, swimming in the crystal-clear waters of the French Riviera, and partaking in a Spanish Tapas Masterchef-esque tournament, all within a month. This is just a small taste of what this trip has to offer. The amount of meaningful memories I’ve made is endless. I met new friends, tried new foods, experienced SO many things for the first time, and had an absolutely surreal amount of fun. 10/10 across the board.

An amazing year abroad!
July 23, 2023by: Lauren Lafferty - United StatesProgram: Study Abroad in the Netherlands with Greenheart Travel
From August 2022 to July 2023, I participated in Greenheart Travel's High School Abroad program in the Netherlands. This is an amazing program and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to participate in it. As a young person, it was so valuable to be able to live abroad and experience an entirely new country and culture. I did experience some difficult situations, but Greenheart Travel's staff was absolutely amazing. They were prompt with their email responses and were always very kind. They helped me solve my problems, and helped to make my exchange year a great one! My only issue with this program was the in-country partner organization. They were not very helpful and I wouldn't recommend them. However, Greenheart was absolutely amazing.
I learned so much!
November 10, 2022by: Adam Lempert - United StatesThank you so much for leading an incredible trip. When I went on the trip, I had the most amazing time. The consolers were fun and knowledgeable. I made many friends on the trip. It was a perfect trip. I truly enjoyed visiting other countries and learning their culture.
Best summer ever!
December 06, 2019by: Allison Aplin - United StatesMy summer with TFT is one that I will never forget! I was super nervous to travel with people I didn't know, but the kids I went with were absolutely amazing. The counselors did fun games with us to get to know each other. By the time we felt Europe all of us were sad because we had to leave our friends. Overall an amazing experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to travel.
What a trip!
November 12, 2019by: Evie Roberts - United StatesProgram: TFT for Older Teens: Amsterdam, Munich, Swiss Alps & Venice
I had the amazing opportunity to travel on the Europe for Older Teens trip to Amsterdam, Munich, Switzerland, and Venice with TFT in the summer of 2018 and it was one of the best experiences I have ever had! My amazing counselors were so welcoming and inclusive to not only me, but all the campers. I was a little nervous to go on the trip at first, but after just one day on the trip I knew I made the right choice! TFT programs are great because the counselors give you that independence you want, while also keeping everyone safe! That trip was one I will never forget, the memories I made with awesome people is priceless. Thank you TFT!
Such a wonderful and unique experience!
December 28, 2018by: Mac Kalna - United StatesThis past summer I went on the Amsterdam, Belgium, Paris trip with Travel for Teens. Let me just say this, Travel for Teens is THE way to go! The immersion of new cultures and people was in abundance throughout the trip making it that much better. All of my counselors were amazing and you could tell that they truly enjoyed the adventure as much as everyone else, but they still knew how to be very responsible and considerate of others.
First time as Counselor in Training!
November 27, 2018by: Cedar Latimer - United StatesTo see all these countries in the span of a couple weeks is amazing. This allowed me to be more immersed in the culture, relax, and have a good time. The cooking classes were a blast, and even though it was only my second time with the company I instantly felt at home with my group. Being a Counselor In Training for TFT is fun and gives you the opportunity to meet new people, enjoy great cuisine, and see awesome sights around the world. Every day of my trip was a once in a lifetime adventure that just kept getting better. This is a chance to explore some of the coolest, most diverse spots in Europe. The Alps, London, Rome, Barcelona, the south of France, and a chocolate factory in Paris were a few of the highlights for me. And seeing the cities firsthand with a local guide, good friends, and one of a kind counselors is so rewarding. I could not have asked for a more special treat because each stop is incredible and filled with excitement. Thank you Travel For Teens you have made a trip I will never forget.
Amazing time in Europe!
November 20, 2018by: Jessica Paszko - United StatesProgram: TFT for Older Teens: Amsterdam, Munich, Swiss Alps & Venice
This was my second trip with Travel for Teens and I was just as amazed by this one! The councilors are so knowledgeable when it comes to travel and made everything so much easier, especially for teens leaving the country for the first time. It's always scary to travel without anyone you know, but the councilors make everyone so comfortable with each other and you end up leaving trips with lasting friendships. Through my TFT trip, I was able to see so many different parts of Europe that I never thought would be possible in one trip. I tried different foods from every culture and interacted with locals. On TFT trips, you see the major landmarks in each city, but also the smaller, locally loved hidden gems. I always come back from my TFT trips with too many incredible stories.
The ultimate summer
November 13, 2018by: Ashley Allen - United StatesThis past summer, I had the pleasure of going on TFT’s Ultimate Europe 30 days trip. For some, 30 days can feel like a lifetime away from home. Yet, the environment I experienced with my counselors and fellow participants became my new home. There was never a dull moment and every minute was spent experiencing the world around us and making it our own personal adventure. From surprise trips to Disneyland Paris to canyoning in Interlaken, I broke out of my comfort zone so many times that I lost count. I not only returned as a more self-actualized young adult but am able to articulate what I want in my own life: new experiences, adventures, and friends to last a lifetime, the true Travel for Teens experience.
Best trip I've ever been on!
October 30, 2018by: Meagan Hoffman - United StatesProgram: TFT for Older Teens: Amsterdam, Munich, Swiss Alps & Venice
My trip with Travel for Teens to Amsterdam, Munich, Switzerland and Venice was one I’ll remember for my entire life. The people I meet and the places I saw were ones that will stay with me my entire life. From seeing the city of Amsterdam while floating down the canals to canyoning through the Swiss Alps, we saw beautiful sights in adventurous and fun ways. We strolled the streets of Venice and engaged ourselves in the Italian cuisine, and in Germany explored the Bavarian alps while bike riding. The program and counselors were supportive and knew what they were doing, and always made sure we were having fun and always in a good mood.
This is the trip to go on!
October 25, 2018by: Sydney Johnson - CanadaProgram: TFT for Older Teens: Amsterdam, Munich, Swiss Alps & Venice
In July 2018, I was given the opportunity of a lifetime: to travel across Europe with amazing kids my age and outstanding councillors. This trip showed me beautiful parts of the world I longed to see since I was a little girl. Not only were the people, accommodations and food incredible, but also the activities. Like canyoning down a mountain side in the middle of the Swiss alps, paddle boating in the canals of Amsterdam and riding my bike on a beautiful trail just at the foot of the Neuschwanstein castle to a lake where we could swim to the middle and be facing the German hillside with 2 beautiful castles. Going on this trip, I can now tell my friends that I’ve traveled across Europe and I’m not even done high school yet. It was truly an incredible experience and I would totally recommend it for any teenagers aspiring to travel.
Best trip to Europe
November 19, 2017by: Graham Parker - United StatesProgram: TFT for Older Teens: Amsterdam, Munich, Swiss Alps & Venice
Traveling with Travel for Teens was one of the best experiences I’ve had. Our trip leaders were fun and really added to the trip by hosting games, keeping us up to date, and adapting the program to our needs. Amsterdam was my favorite city because of the culture, history, and arts. Germany was fun with biking around Munich and then going to tour Neuschwanstein Castle. One of the best parts of the trip was meeting new people and making new friends. This trip, hands down, was one of the best tips I’ve had to Europe.
Time of my life
November 16, 2017by: Sara Chesak - United StatesProgram: TFT for Older Teens: Amsterdam, Munich, Swiss Alps & Venice
I went on this trip July of 2017 and had the time of my life! I instantly made friends with everyone on the trip and that made the whole trip even more fun! Exploring new cultures and sites everyday, going shopping and trying unique foods, seeing historical landmarks and meeting new people, this trip was a dream! I highly recommend it. Go TFT!

Although I do not speak English very well but both the guys and our trip mates helped me to fully enjoy the holiday. Personally the city that I liked the most was Paris, especially as it was arranged the tour of the city.

Engaging and insightful
January 24, 2017by: Kristina Khimich - South KoreaProgram: TFT for Older Teens: Amsterdam, Munich, Swiss Alps & Venice
This trip has to be one of the best trips I have experienced. Not only did I learn a lot during the trip, but I also had fun doing so. The staff are awesome and engaging, and there was no discomfort throughout my time with all the new friends I made. My favourite places were Amsterdam and Montreux(Swiss Alps), because although there were so many things to do, it was still a calming atmosphere. We got lucky, and we got to go to the Montreaux Jazz festival that was on during our time there and it was amazing! The people were all so different and vibrant, the music was exhilarating. I'd recommend this to all of my friends and to whoever is interesting in spending an awesome summer with new interesting people!

Ultimate Europe
January 24, 2017by: Emma Santiccioli - United StatesProgram: TFT for Older Teens: Amsterdam, Munich, Swiss Alps & Venice
TFT is the best thing that has happened to my summers! I went on the Ultimate Europe 21 day option and it was everything I was looking for and more. No other place offers trips like them, I went everywhere I wanted and more! But without a doubt, the best bart of the trips are the people who I met. My best friends and I instantly clicked the first day and have been inseparable ever since. I have traveled on two separate occasions already to visit them because we cannot bear to stay away from each other for that long. There is a certain type of bond made when you are spending every waking moment with the same people, with also experiencing the once in a life time opportunities TFT offers.
