AFS Intercultural Programs: High School Abroad in France

Develop fluency in the French language and culture by living with a host family and studying at a local high school. Paris is magnificent, but France is more than one city. AFS students have lived in communities ranging from the snowcapped Alps to the sparkling Mediterranean. Most host families live in small towns, which will help you become a part of the community. Since France is a historically Catholic country, even the most rural villages have incredible cathedrals rising above quaint cobblestone streets. And, if you long to stroll the Champs-Élysées and snap pics of the Eiffel Tower, you’ll likely have that opportunity. AFS area chapters in France are usually large and active, planning trips to some of the most iconic destinations with other AFS exchange students worldwide. With AFS, you will discover what it means to live in France as a local. With its architecture, painting, cuisine, fashion, philosophy, and much more, it's easy to understand why France attracts so many AFS students.

Travel For Teens: Costa Rica Adventure and Service

Join us in Costa Rica for unforgettable memories and valuable service work! We will have the unique opportunity to perform 20 hours of valuable service work in two different communities. In La Fortuna we will work alongside the local association of Boy Scouts with various projects like planting trees to promote a better ecosystem, light construction, and clean-up projects. TFT feels strongly about the impact of this organization and we contribute every year to help them continue their mission in the community. In Sámara we work with another local association that provides supplemental educational, recreational, and career opportunities for youth with limited resources in the rural beach communities of the surrounding area. We will be helping run one of their many programs focusing on academic and artistic education, environmental consciousness, health, and socio-cultural development. Projects vary but our service work typically consists of working on art projects with the children, reading to them, teaching them English, and general upkeep of the school such as painting and light maintenance.

Hablas español? Spanish is known for its variety of dialects, which gives you a wide selection of locations to choose from. Latin American Spanish is spoken primarily in locations such as Mexico, Costa Rica, Bolivia, and Peru. If you want to master the lispy Spain-Spanish, whet your whistle in Barc(th)elona or Valenc(th)ia.

Est-ce que tu parles français? Spend some time basking in the glittering city of Paris while sharpening your French skills and taking in the best of France. After class you can take your new French skills to the streets and cruise the Seine at sunset, stroll the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, and explore the boulevards by bike.

Sprichst du Deutsch? If German is your Sprache of choice, Berlin is perfect for testing the international waters of language immersion. The multicultural metropolis maintains the unpretentious charm of an international village while simultaneously packing in a multitude of history lessons.

I can honestly say that coming to Local Life Japan was one of the greatest decisions of my life! As a 19 year old on my gap year after high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life when my mum showed me this place. A week later I was on a plane, in foreign country whose language I didn’t speak. The next month was a wonderfully chaotic whirlwind of experience and rapid learning. In a month I went from knowing only Hiragana and Katakana to being able to have full conversations in Japanese and make friends in a whole new part of the world. I couldn’t recommend Local Life Japan more! From the caring and attentive teachers, to the fast paced and engaging lessons to the wonderful local and cultural experience, this place has it all!
