High School Study Abroad in Austria

Austria is a fairly small country with a population of just over 8 million citizens. Most of the country lies at a high altitude in the northern and eastern regions of the Alps, which makes for world class hiking, skiing, and other outdoor adventure activities.

Most high school students choose to settle in for their program in Vienna, the country’s capital and largest city. Vienna is home to over a quarter of Austria’s population and is the main political, economic, and cultural hub of the country. Renowned for its immense influence throughout Europe in the arts and sciences, Vienna was home to such famed persons as Marie Antoinette, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Sigmund Freud. Much of its historical architecture, such as the Schonbrunn Palace and State Opera House, has survived the country’s tumultuous history and remains accessible to the general public.

Other cities that are common locations for high school programs in Austria include Salzburg, Graz, and Linz. While no other city comes close to Vienna in size and global influence, these alternative destinations can offer a more quaint and authentic experience of the Austrian lifestyle. Many high school programs in Austria will further take you to several cities and towns across the country, so you do not have to choose just one!

Two unforgettable weeks

When I decided I wanted to travel last summer, I looked at quite a few websites before I finally found TFT. I knew immediately that they were the company I wanted to spend my summer with because they had such a variety of intriguing options. The trip that really piqued my interest was the Europe for Older Teens: Prague, Austria, Slovenia & Croatia, and my experience with TFT ended up being two of the best weeks of my life! The activities were a perfect mix of history, culture, and free time to get to know all of the amazing people this tour allowed me to meet. Whether it was the locals, counselors, or other campers, I so enjoyed spending time with and interacting with them all! From wandering around the magical streets of Prague, gorging on pastries (and just food in general) in Vienna, indulging in the splendor of nature in Bled, and having my breath taken away by the charm of the Adriatic, every day was a treat. My summer with Travel for Teens was unforgettable, and I look forward to seeing even more of the world with them in the future!

Once-in-a-lifetime experience

I had an AMAZING experience living in Austria for three months last year on Greenheart's trimester program. Excellent family, excellent location, and excellent cultural immersion. I had no idea our cultures could be so different. Greenheart did an awesome job of making sure I was placed with a safe family that could suit my needs (I am non-smoking and vegetarian) and passions. They also were always helping us with Visa questions and the like. And my experience with Greenheart did not end after I returned from Austria. They are much more than a travel abroad program, and they are dedicated to helping alumni engage in community service (they offer grants, workshops, and conferences) and further cultural immersion. Highly, HIGHLY, recommend.
