A Guide to Degrees Abroad in Multiple Countries
Locations
You’re ready to start your educational vagabond experience, but where to begin? Would you like to cowabunga the beaches of Australia, bustle through the busy markets in Thailand, or tour the world famous art in the Louvre? The only trouble you’ll have is deciding which route to take when earning multi-country degrees abroad!
Europe is an attractive destination for adventurers like yourself. When getting your degree abroad in multiple countries, Europe excels thanks to each country being so culturally diverse, and yet close enough together to zip across borders in the blink of an eye. Not to mention this makes degrees in global studies and lessons in diplomacy a breeze. Take in the art, the culture, and the ancient history as you fly from the hearty streets of Germany to the high fashion in Italy. Capture castles and cold brews in the Czech Republic, or dine on the finest cuisines in France.
For a real cultural difference from the western world, pursue your multiple countries degree abroad in Asia. You won’t be disappointed by the buffet of modern skylines, crystal clear waters, and looming mountains that Asia has to offer. Cruise China, where you’ll see the showstopping skyscrapers of Hong Kong, frolic through the financial center of Shanghai, climb the astounding Great Wall of China in Beijing, and sneak a peek at the Monk’s life in Tibet. Mosey down to the southeast to let yourself relax on Thailand’s utopic beaches, and climb the dramatic limestone cliffs that dangle over the sea in Railay. Head north to indulge in shopping and tasty street food at the bustling open air markets of Bangkok, then peacefully stroll through the glistening palaces in Chiang Mai. You won’t regret taking a dip in eastern culture on this gorgeous continent.
Maybe you’re searching for the rainforest, the surfing hotspots, or the outback! Degrees abroad in Oceania open up a sea of options. While most programs are based in Australia, you’re just a hop, skip, and jump away from destinations like Fiji, Indonesia, New Guinea, and the Philippines. The Land Down Under boasts a buffet of art, food, and wildlife adventure, too. Snorkel with the sea turtles along the Great Barrier Reef, or surf and play on Bondi beach. Take a hike in one of the many national parks or in the depths of the rainforest. When you’re done, take in shows at the Sydney Opera house, or analyze Aboriginal art at Australia’s galleries.
Multi-Country Degree Programs
Since you’ll be traveling to many countries throughout the course of your education, the opportunities for growth are endless. You’ll have the rare opportunity to complete multi-country degrees abroad in parts of the world that others only dream of. There are programs for any combo of major, minor, and discipline, but the most popular include global studies, international diplomacy, and the arts.
Study the interconnectedness of the world through a global studies program. See how people interact politically, economically, and culturally to promote positive connections throughout the world. International diplomacy is similar with a heavier dose of politics. Or, for your inner artiste, ogle at the paintings and sculptures of the world with a program in the arts. If you think about it, these are all logical topics to study while you’re country hopping. Seeing traditions, government, and culture firsthand instead of through a book? Seeing the raw depths and inner workings of a country straight from all of the artists’ pieces? Yes, please! Experience is the best way to learn.
You can expect to travel around for one to three years for master’s or doctorate degrees, and three to four years for a bachelor's degree program. While you’re busy crossing borders while tackling your degree abroad, you’ll pick up a fair amount of foreign languages, too. Classes are usually taught in English, but you’ll naturally learn some handy phrases in each new country. Class structure and expectations will vary from place to place. Just keep an open mind and heart for this adventure, and the classroom won’t be the only place that gets you thinking.
Costs & Affordability
Everyone knows that traveling can be expensive. It’s no secret that sometimes you’ll need to scrape together spare change from under those couch cushions (so to speak) to make it work. However, in the end, any wanderluster will tell you that the experience is worth the sacrifice. Some of multicountry degree programs are pricey, but keep in mind that several include the cost of travel, tuition, and housing between each new country and city. While you will likely pay more than at most universities, the benefits of traveling will world will outweigh the cost for the rest of your life. It’s worth it to invest in yourself.
Can’t quite stack up the funds? Don’t fret. Most multi-country degree programs like these have very hefty scholarship funds that you can take a look-see at via GoAbroad’s Scholarship Directory. In fact, most programs encourage students to apply for their scholarships because they know the cost of travel can be steep, but it’s an experience they want to provide for students of all backgrounds. Just make sure to save up as much as you can, work out a budget before leaving, and you should do just fine. You could also considering reaching out to friends and family via FundMyTravel. Lookin’ at you, Aunt June.
Accommodations & Visas
Through most multi-country degree programs, housing is provided in many different forms. You could be welcomed into a homestay with a local family, taste some home cooked meals, and hear some of the native tongue. Other possibilities might include living with a group of students in flats or dorms, or hostels/hotels for shorter stays. Some programs even allow you to find your own housing if you wish, which will allow you lots of personal freedom, but that will be on your own dime.
Visa requirements vary country to country and depend on the length of your stay. For shorter stays, all you need is a tourist visa, which is usually valid for 60 to 120 days. Any longer than that, and you will likely need to apply for a student visa through your local embassy. Find your closest embassy in the GoAbroad Embassy Directory. Your program will usually provide details of what kind of visa you’ll need and answer any questions you might have. Just make sure to start any visa or passport applications well in advance of your departure since these can be time consuming processes.
Benefits & Challenges
Once you’ve tackled your studious years roaming the globe and finishing your degree, you’ll be employable and unstoppable. Any job in diplomacy or international studies will be in the palm of your hand, but even if that’s not your path of study, employers will have their socks knocked off when they see you’ve taken it upon yourself to earn your degree abroad. Traveling requires a great amount of planning, problem solving, flexibility, and a good sense of humor. You’ll be a pro in all of these skills, and they just so happen to be what the boss is looking for.
Taking on an multinational degree can be a big mountain to climb. In addition to your normal schoolwork, you’ll be responsible for visas, travel paperwork, budgeting your travel funds, and adjusting to new cultures. There can be lots of distractions on the road, and balancing travel fun time with school work can be a challenge. So check yourself before you wreck yourself. Before you take on this cool responsibility, make sure you are ready for the commitment of time, money, and hard work. Traveling is one of the best ways to learn, just make sure you get to class on time too!
Apart from scoring your dream job, you’ll feel a great sense of accomplishment knowing you’ve conquered this path less traveled. Travel shapes you into a well-rounded and self-sufficient being. When you’re dependent on yourself to sign up for classes, to plan a weekend excursion, or even to make your flight on time, you’ll learn how strong you really are. So what are you waiting for? Pick your multi-country degree program, pack your backpacks, and say bon voyage! The world is waiting.

The best decision for a college student
April 10, 2025by: Emma Schardt - GermanyProgram: Study Abroad at UAB: Business Management Across Europe
I had an amazing time, truly a time in my life I will always cherish. I was able to call a new place home, meet so many new people who I made lifelong friendships with and created memories I will forever remember. I also grew as a person by navigating a new environment completely on my own, finding myself away from environments I am used to and explored new places that taught me so much.

Studying in Barcelona has been an incredible journey of growth and discovery. Leaving Venezuela at 18 was a big challenge, but this city has given me independence, new friendships, and amazing experiences. Adapting to a new culture wasn’t easy at first, but now I love the Mediterranean lifestyle, my studies in international business, and my job as a media manager. From running by the beach to weekend adventures, every day here teaches me something new. Studying abroad is challenging but so worth it—it’s an experience that changes you forever!

An incredible experience to learn about arts and cultural management while being immersed in many cultural experiences. What other program allows you to compare experiences from so many different perspectives? A truly unique offering!
Many thanks Robert for your review! It is true that experiencing how arts are managed in many countries and contexts gives you many points of view and possibly new ideas.
Multidisciplinary international inmersion
November 01, 2022by: Elizabeth Alvarado - PeruProgram: Master of Management in International Arts Management
The Master in International Art Management gave me a worldwide perspective on the cultural sector and how to navigate and manage its oportunities and challenges, in addition to providing an introduction to cultural sites, theory, and field studies. Its multidisciplinary approach also provided me the tools to articulate and manage different specialties and perspectives.
Thanks a lot Elizabeth for your review. It is true that we don't train people to manage a specific art form. Our graduate can manage many types of arts organizations, and even work for culture ministries!
The most unique experience of my life!
November 01, 2022by: Bailey McFaden - United StatesProgram: Master of Management in International Arts Management
Many graduate and undergraduate programs had trouble adjusting to international education during the pandemic. This program definitely falls into that category but they did an incredible job making sure we got the most out of the experience by providing alternatives for us to explore. We spent our first semester (Fall 2020) completely online with the hopes that we could be in the classroom together in the spring. The world started to open up for us in January so many of us quickly applied for our visas and quarantined in Montréal so that we could all meet in person at HEC Montréal. Now, we had no idea if we could visit any of the other locations so we did our best to be present there in Canada and have hope that we would be able to (at the very least) travel to Milano. Most of us applied for our Italian visas and found out just days before our flight that we would be studying in the classroom at SDA Bocconi. It was such an extra special experience joining the Bocconi MAMA group for lectures, group projects, consultations, and best of all, their Grand Tour of southern Italy. This final trip that we took was a replacement for our cohort that missed visiting the three other countries we were meant to visit (Colombia, India, China) and while it wasn't an equal trade in terms of international experiential learning, we had a wonderful time and experienced places and organizations I wouldn't have ever been able to visit on my own. Bocconi was an incredible host and I remain very grateful for these people and these adventures! With all of that being said, I will like to say that while I understand the difficulty of navigating ever-changing international safety protocols, I know that many of us craved better communication from our administrators. Being left "in the dark" created some unnecessary stress to our day to day decision making in this program, and I maintain the opinion that transparency is key to running a successful program of study. I additionally understand that many of our professors and lecturers were also navigating their jobs in the arts field during those unprecedented times, and many of them were successful in balancing their day to day lives as well as being present for us and our learning. But there were a couple of professors that truly left us stranded with questions and curiosities left unanswered. These things did not ruin the experience for me, they were simply a disappointing aspect of the program that I hope will continuously evolve for their betterment. I always felt as though I could speak up and give feedback that would be heard by the directors and administrators, I felt very respected for my opinions and my voice and that is the reason why I am able to leave this overall positive review. Nothing about our Masters studies was ideal, all of us had to be flexible and optimistic about the future, but we made it happen and we supported one another! I made lifelong friendships along the way and memories that will always be completely unique to us. I'm very grateful I took this risk and spent my time during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic getting my Masters in International Arts Management. I miss each of the people pictured here every single day and hope we may all be able to reunite in the near future!

Thank you Bailey for your review. We welcome your opinion and acknowledge your criticism. Your cohort was struck the hardest by the pandemic, as you had to study in an everchanging context: borders that opened, closed, then opened again, plans that changed often… I am sorry that you felt that you were left “in the dark”, as we were doing all we could to give our students an information as accurate as possible. We can always improve so we will. Fortunately, you kept good memories of your program. Thank you for posting those awesome pictures! I hope that you and the other MMIAM 8 will be able to join any of the future cohorts on their international trips so that you can experience the parts of the program that you missed.
Best Masters in the world!
October 28, 2022by: Marion Lecoq - CanadaProgram: Master of Management in International Arts Management
I really had one of the best years of my life studying in this masters. Not only did I learned a lot in the course of one year, but I also made friends for life and had the chance to discover many great places around the world. It was great to meet many art professionals in every city that we visited and to be immersed in the local culture like we did.
Thank you so much Marion for your comment. I'm sure your cohort stayed in touch with the arts managers you met in the cities you visited as this is a great way to develop your international professional network.
Best year of my life!
October 27, 2022by: Anne-Sophie Grenier - CanadaProgram: Master of Management in International Arts Management
I did the MMIAM program in 2017 - 2018. The structure of the program has changed since then (they've added more countries). In my time, we did one semester at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, one semester at HEC in Montreal, Quebec, three weeks at Universidad de los Andes in Bogota, Colombia, and one semester at SDA Bocconi in Milan, Italy. In each country we had great field trips to artistic organizations and events, met with cultural leaders, and had time to explore, travel, and dive in! It was life changing on so many levels, and my classmates and I are all still good friends. The academic expectations and rigor vary from school to school. This isn't a pass/fail semester abroad - it's a masters' degree from some of the top schools. Overall it was very enriching and I quickly got a leadership role in arts organizations after graduating - though this isn't the case with everyone. The program is pricey and moving every semester poses some challenges in terms of finding affordable accommodations that are suitable for grad students. Overall, it was totally worth it.
Thank you very much Anne-Sophie for your review. It is true, the program helps students grow faster in their career but this depends on the student's work experience before the program and his/her personality and talent. You clearly had what it took, congratulations!
It was a once-in-a-lifetime learning experience!
October 27, 2022by: Diandian Gu - ChinaProgram: Master of Management in International Arts Management
It was a very enlightening experience. I highly recommend the program not only for its unique structure, but also for its internationality and genuinely caring atmosphere. I had the opportunity to learn about art from all angles: artists, administrators and patrons. I am very fortunate to have been able to travel to many countries in Europe, North/South America and speak with some of the most renowned individuals in the arts world. My cohort was amazing - extremely diverse and fascinating people. The leading professor Francois was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. The curriculum was well established, not perfect but definitely a good learning path.
Thank you very much Diandian for your comment. Feel free to tell us what you would change in the curriculum. We are always open to improvement.
New family and new worlds
October 25, 2022by: John Tenny - United StatesProgram: Master of Management in International Arts Management
The MMIAM Program is a completely unique masters program. On the MMIAM you are one of an intimate cohort of intelligent, diverse, and dynamic students from all over the world. Your fellow cohort members will bring a richness of experience and perspectives that are incomparable to any other degree program. Your cohort of 7-15 becomes your family as your travel around the world to study at different prestigious universities and undertake consulting projects in the US, Canada, Colombia, Italy, and India. There is nothing like it in the world, and the amount of real world experience and dynamism gained from this program is something that can hardly be explained. Attend one of their info sessions and you will quickly know this is where you belong.
Thank you John for your comment and for mentioning the MMIAM family. You are right, attending an information session is a very good way to know if there is a fit between the program and a prospective student.
No Arts Management Master's program can compare!
October 15, 2022by: Hayley P - CanadaProgram: Master of Management in International Arts Management
The combination of small cohort size, immersion in six countries, and the pairing of both theoretical and practical learning applications is unparalleled in an Arts Management Master's program. If considering the program, reach out to the administration, and they can connect you with alumni to share their experiences and answer questions - that is what convinced me the program was the right fit for me.
Thank you Hayley for your comment and for pointing out that we can put prospective students in contact with alums. We sure can! :-)

I had always dreamt about studying abroad, when I saw the opportunity of a Bachelor's Degree where I could take each year in a different country I thought that it would be the perfect programme for me and it actually was. The experience of being part of an international group with students from all nationalities was incredible. Also, it has been very fascinating to experience different teaching methods and to learn about different cultures.
