Why Earn a Degree Abroad
There are many types of journalism roles you can enter into, all of which have one thing in common: the audience is becoming more global. As more and more people all over the world gain access to a diversity of information sources through the internet and mass media, journalists must be constantly in tune with their increasingly international body of readers. Pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate journalism and broadcasting degree abroad will help put you in touch with the world beyond your home nation, and enhance your skills and perspective as a reporter of fact.
Locations
An obvious first parameter when deciding where to pursue your journalism degree abroad is the language barrier. Luckily many of the world’s very best journalism schools are in English speaking countries. Colleges such as Columbia University in the United States, the University of Sheffield in the UK, and James Cook University in Australia, feature some of the most prestigious journalism schools (or J-Schools) in the world. Beyond these are hundreds more academic institutions where you can earn a journalism degree abroad, making your options extremely bountiful in the English speaking world.
As bilingualism is especially valued among modern international journalists, you might also consider taking your journalism studies to a country where English is not the primary language spoken. Earning a full journalism degree abroad will give you plenty of time to master the local language, giving you great versatility for a job in professional journalism after graduation. Countries ranging from Argentina to Italy to Japan can all provide journalism students with a unique academic experience while granting them the opportunity to learn a valuable new language.
The silver lining though is that most universities in non-English speaking countries will use the local language as the medium for classroom instruction and readings. So while earning a journalism degree abroad in the non-English speaking world is an exciting proposition, which can be very rewarding professionally, you will want to enter your studies with at least a respectable proficiency in the local language as to not be overwhelmed.
Journalism Degrees Abroad
Traditionally journalism and broadcasting degrees are conferred at the graduate level, although many schools across the world are beginning to offer undergraduate degrees in journalism as well. If you are planning to earn your bachelors degree in journalism abroad then you will likely be attending a university for either three or four years. While not every university offers journalism and broadcasting degrees at the undergraduate level, most will at least offer programs in related fields, such as communications, which covers many of the same basic course concepts.
Masters degrees in journalism typically do not require that you have studied journalism at the undergraduate level, and programs will accept students from a wide array of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences (i.e. English, history, political science, film, etc.). Master’s degrees usually require one or two years of study to complete, depending on whether you study full time or part time, and whether you combine journalism with another course of study.
While undergraduate journalism programs will typically introduce you to a wide range of general concepts that facilitate a deep understanding of the field of journalism, graduate programs will usually give you the opportunity to specialize according to your individual interests in the field. For example media business, digital journalism, and television reporting are all directed ways you can focus your degree towards a specific career goal.
