As you sort through what to bring and what to leave behind for your next international experience, it’s a great idea to reach out to students that have completed a study abroad term, especially if they traveled to your destination, for practical suggestions. Time and again you’re likely to hear, “I wish I had packed…” followed by at least one of the items on this list. These are the top 10 items that you may not think to pack for international travel, but by the time you return from your trip, you’ll be glad that you did!

1. Travel Pillow

You’ll be so happy that you left room for a good travel pillow, especially when you squeeze in that little extra sleep on the go! Seasoned travelers – which you will soon be – know that for all the time spent getting around in planes, trains and automobiles, the extra comfort of a travel pillow is indispensable.

2. Disposable Cameras

Yes disposable cameras seem so… ten years ago. However, you might be surprised at how much fun you and your new friends will have taking pictures with these out-of-date cameras, and it’s pretty neat to look back at memories when you get the pictures developed. Without the ability to edit and delete pictures in an instant, you have to wait to see how the pictures turn out; this gives you the chance to reflect upon where you were, who you were with, what you were doing, etc. Taking pictures with a disposable camera is a great way to save memories and review them at the end of your journey.

3. Universal Plug Adapter (with multiple outlets)

Look for a universal plug adapter that works in your destination and any surrounding countries to which you may travel. A universal plug adapter that works in nearly every country provides far greater travel flexibility than a power adapter for one particular country or region. As you prepare to study abroad or travel internationally, you can find several reasonably priced converter/adapter duos available online. If you get something with two outlets, you won’t always have to choose between what you need to use or charge!

4. Reliable Wristwatch

These days, so many people have stopped wearing watches in favor of checking the time on their phones. Cellphones are super convenient, but battery life is precious for the traveler! A wristwatch is a great travel asset in any time zone; it’s also a great gift item for anyone about to become a student abroad.

5. Carry-on Suitcase

Get yourself a quality piece of luggage. Anyone that has ever had a suitcase fail can attest to what a nightmare this is! Save yourself the aggravation and start your trip off right: an international standard size carry-on hard shell suitcase will last a semester abroad – and beyond. Some of the newer options out there include modern amenities like a built-in charger and removable laundry bag.

6. Deck of Cards

Few things unite cultures like card games. A game of cards is a cheap and easy way to socialize and share different games and traditions across cultures. A deck of cards is also great to have on hand to pass the time during travel delays!

Different backpack styles

7. Lightweight Backpack

A simple backpack that you can use for day trips and travel will make your life much easier. Look for a bag with a zipper that’s just big enough to carry the essentials: wallet, phone, keys, water bottle and maybe a notebook.

8. Selfie Stick

Selfie sticks may never be cool – but they actually do help you get that perfect shot! Don’t be afraid to swallow your pride and bring a selfie stick for those once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Looking back in a few years, you may not remember you even used one, but the incredible moments it helped you capture will be unforgettable.

9. Travel Size Toiletry Kit

As you prepare for the life of a jet-setter, pre-packed toiletries are a timesaving convenience you will always appreciate having on hand. You never know when the opportunity to go exploring will turn up. A kit with toiletry essentials (toothbrush, toothpaste and travel sized product containers) that’s ready to go will make life much easier.

10. Portable Battery Charger

A portable battery charger with USB ports can be a lifesaver when traveling! Emergency/alternative power when you need it for your phone and various electronic devices is a great way to simplify your life abroad.
