How to Go on Homestay Adventure Travel Abroad
Overview
Prepare for your Homestay Abroad
Understand the benefits
Sharing daily life with a host family abroad turns an ordinary trip into something personal and unforgettable. These are just a few things that make it so special:
- Cultural immersion. Experience daily life, traditions, and routines like a true local.
- Language learning. Improve your skills naturally through everyday conversations.
- Local insights. Discover hidden gems and tips you’d never find as a tourist.
- A second family. Staying with another family means becoming part of one. Even after you leave, you’ll know there’s someone across the world who feels like home.
Things to know
Before you dive into daily life with your host family, keep these helpful tips in your back pocket:
- Respect and adaptability. Be ready to adjust to new routines, house rules, and ways of living. It’s all part of the experience.
- Meals. Most homestays include shared meals, giving you a delicious intro to local flavors and family customs.
- Communication. Chat openly with your hosts about privacy, schedules, and expectations to set the tone for a smooth stay.
- Gifts and etiquette. A small thank-you gift is a kind and appreciated way to start your stay on a warm note.
- Safety. Homestay providers usually vet families, but it’s always smart to check reviews and ask questions if anything feels unclear.
Locations
Choose a Location
Homestays are available all over the world, so you're not short on options. You probably already have a country in mind or at least one you've always wanted to visit. If not, here are a few suggestions to get you started.
Costa Rica
If you're into nature, friendly people, and that laid-back pura vida vibe, Costa Rica is a great choice. Homestays here often feel like you're part of a small, tight-knit community—and yes, the scenery is as amazing as you’d expect.
Australia
Whether you're by the beach or out in the bush, Australia offers a super chill homestay experience. You’ll get to know local life, share meals with your hosts, and maybe even pick up some Aussie slang while you're at it.
Ecuador
Ecuador is full of surprises. One day you’re in the mountains, the next you’re exploring colorful markets or relaxing on the coast. Staying with a family here is a great way to practice Spanish and experience the heart of the culture, not just the highlights.
Getting Started
Tips & Advice
Taking the leap to start your homestay journey can be exciting and a bit overwhelming, but getting started is easier than you might think. Here’s what to do:
1. Get matched
Start by using the GoAbroad Online Advisor to find homestay programs tailored to your goals and interests. It's an easy way to see what options fit your needs.
2. Choose a program
Create a MyGoAbroad account to compare different programs and find the perfect fit for you.
3. Funding & scholarships
Traveling, even for a homestay, can still get costly. You’ll need to budget for flights and day-to-day expenses while you're in another country. To help cover your trip, consider creating a campaign on FundMyTravel.
4. Apply
If a program catches your eye, click "Apply Now" or "Inquire Here" on the program listing. From there, you’ll be connected directly with the provider, who will guide you through the process.
5. Get your essentials
The most important part of your preparation is making sure your passport and visa are good to go. You’ll also want to book your flights and arrange travel insurance well ahead of time, so nothing sneaks up on you later.

I had the best experience in this beautiful small iland. It has so much of cultural beauties and activities. People are so warm and friendly. My one week stay was simply amazing! I strongly recommend this island and their programs for student travelers. But this would be more fun if you go as a group of 10 to 20 or more.

Blair’s Amazing Thailand Adventure!
July 10, 2025by: Blair Calihan - United StatesProgram: Thailand Adventures and Service with Rustic Pathways
I went on the Rustic Pathways Thailand Adventurer trip, and it was the best experiences of my life. The leaders were absolutely fantastic and always there whenever you need them. The company itself was very well ran and organized. The people were all super nice making my time even more enjoyable! All the activities were super fun and I loved my time traveling, exploring, and immersing myself into the Thailand culture!
Hi Blair! Thanks so much for sharing! We’re thrilled you had such a great time exploring Thailand with us. Sounds like your group, the leaders, and all the adventures made it a trip to remember! See you next summer (*fingers crossed*)!
Some of the best weeks of my life
May 21, 2025by: Max Wenham - EnglandProgram: South America Explorer with Gapforce
This was my first travel experience and it was great. Starting in Cusco was a great place to meet everyone and the city is amazing. The Salkantay trek was some of the best days of my life with Machu Picchu capping it off. So the whole trip with Quilatoa, the activities in Baños, the wildlife volunteering and the otovalo market it’s overall a great trip. I would also say though if you are going bring a bit of soap unless you’re ok with 3in1 :) and pack a bit of variety in your clothing as you will be trekking but there are opportunities to go out at night with the others on the trip.

The best travel experience I’ve had!
November 28, 2024by: Niko Brank - United StatesProgram: AFS Summer Global Prep in Colombia
This program was amazing; my group and I spent our 2 weeks well exploring all Popayán and the surrounding areas have to offer. The group I went with was great, and the 8 of us got pretty close by the end of the trip, as well as growing close with our AFS staff chaperone, making unforgettable memories. I also grew very to my host mom, who despite not speaking a word of English, we got to know each other very well and she took me to some of Cauca’s most amazing places during family day. Best experience I could ask for in such a short 2 week period. Get ready, future AFSers for an adventure to remember.

Life changing experience
November 28, 2024by: Callum BuchananProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester

The opportunities and emphasis on the 'discovery' aspect of the program
November 19, 2024by: Peter GrumanProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester
Pacific Discovery was recommended to us by parents of a PD alumni (Aus/NZ) and it made a huge difference to us in our review of alternative programs. The points highlighted by the parents that appealed to us centered around personal growth, world/cultural/travel experience, great planning, and excellent guides; our student's experience was terrific in all these aspects, and we so appreciate the guidance he received during the program to help contextualize all of the amazing and mundane experiences he had on the progam. The opportunities and emphasis on the 'discovery' aspect of the program particularly for his individual development, was, for us, the main reason for selecting PD, and we couldn't be more pleased with how that purpose was achieved.
The spontaneous discoveries the group was making
November 12, 2024by: Diana GrumanProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester
We loved the communication between Pacific Discovery and parents. The portal offered detailed information and forms prior to the trip. During the trip, the weekly summaries gave us a window into the activities and the spontaneous discoveries the group was making in their towns, service sites, and local hosts.
I feel like I’ve grown a lot and learned a lot about myself from stepping out of my comfort zone.
November 03, 2024by: Gemma ColeProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester
The South America Gap Semester pushed me out of my comfort zone both mentally, physically, and socially. Pushing my body beyond what I thought it could do, opening up to - and being vulnerable with- a new group of people, and communicating in a different language in a place so vastly different than I’m used to, were all challenging and rewarding experiences. I feel like I’ve grown a lot and learned a lot about myself from stepping out of my comfort zone and opening myself up to new opportunities and possibilities.

Life-changing trip
October 30, 2024by: Noah Lopez - EnglandProgram: Thailand Adventures and Service with Rustic Pathways
The trip was life-changing doesn't even cover it. We got to work with animals and live like a local. If anything there could have beebn more time doing that thought. I loved the trip iwth Rustic. If you want travel with a purpose, look no further. I feel more conscientious of water usage and the need for help in other countries.

Lifetime experience
October 29, 2024by: Victoria Flores - United StatesProgram: Thailand Adventures and Service with Rustic Pathways
Rustic has a great tour for anyone serious about diving deep into a region through the eyes of the locals. My class recently took a trip to Thailand with them, and they nailed it by taking us far from the usual tourist spots, giving us a raw, authentic glimpse of life there. The highlight? Visiting the indigenous community—a rare opportunity we would’ve never had without Rustic's insider connections.
Hi Victoria! Thank you so much for traveling with us. We love that the highlight of your trip was visiting the indigenous community! We're glad you made a true connection with the people and their culture. And we hope you join us on another trip soon!
Incredible
October 29, 2024by: Benjamin Thomas - United StatesProgram: Thailand Adventures and Service with Rustic Pathways
The nature was incredible—buffalo by the road, colorful insects, and the majestic elephants. The villagers were kind and made me feel safe. Outside of the project, I played football with locals, bonded with the children, and made real connections. The elephants and gibbons were unforgettable, and Huay Pakoot became a special place thanks to the people, animals, and landscape.
Hey Benjamin! Thanks so much for traveling with us, and we're thrilled that you had a great time. Thailand is such a special place. We hope you join us on another trip soon!
Best memories
October 29, 2024by: Amber Allen - United StatesProgram: Thailand Adventures and Service with Rustic Pathways

Amazing Experience!
August 25, 2024by: Katy Abbott - United StatesMy 15 year old daughter looked at a number of programs before narrowing in on this program. ARCC was very professional prior to departure, during the trip, and afterwards. My daughter got so many experiences within the two weeks she was there-- all so valuable and educational. I loved that the teenagers were without phones for all but an hour of the trip. ARCC has the whole thing dialed. It's clear they know what they are doing.
