The Real Uganda

The Real Uganda's volunteers assist our partners with a variety of agriculture and conservation activities. Because subsistence farming is a way of life in Uganda, efficient agricultural techniques and extra hands help improve the lives of rural Ugandans. Volunteers work on communal farms. They clear land, prepare soil, plant food crops and trees, weed, harvest, and chase away pests. Volunteer ideas and energy encourages our farmers and eases their work. Garden tools and training are provided on-site, but volunteers are encouraged to bring appropriate garden boots, gloves, and sun hat. This is a challenging and rewarding program for volunteers interested in hard work, and learning about food security and the effects of global climate change in developing countries. Other activities such as women empowerment and primary school teaching may be on offer by the host organization. Volunteers should dig in and try everything. The exchange of ideas and culture is highly valued in Uganda.

Over ten days, we will immerse ourselves in the natural world with overnight stays in stunning safari lodges with excursions into a series of Ugandan wildlife reserves. Animal encounters will include tracking and observing chimpanzee families in their natural habitat, spotting elephants, leopards, and buffalo on game drives, and coming face-to-face with rare tree-climbing lions - a rare breed of lion only found in two places in the world - as you track them with a local conservationist. Volunteering in Mukono offers a unique opportunity to give back to rural communities through participation in grassroots projects. On top of this, you will gain an insight into the daily living conditions of locals. As a volunteer, you will experience traditional Ugandan life and take part in daily activities. These include helping in construction and building, visiting elderly villagers, teaching children outside their classrooms, assisting in setting up vegetable gardens, giving youth health talks, teaching English to high school students, feeding animals, and organizing health outreach programs. Ssamba Foundation operates in rural communities where dirt roads turn to sticky mud when it rains and into dust when the climate is dry. The main transport is Boda- Boda bikes, which share the road with animals and bicycles. Like a big part of Uganda, these communities have households struggling to meet their basic needs; much less putting their kids in school. Their main sources of income include small-scale animal rearing, selling fruits and vegetables, brickmaking, and other manual labor jobs.

Bugeme Initiative for Development (BID)

The Bugembe Initiative for Development (BID) is an action-oriented, community-based organization dedicated to empowering women, youth, and vulnerable individuals. Formed in 2011 with its base in Bugembe, Jinja District, the Bugembe Initiative for Development (BID) is an action-oriented, community-based organization dedicated to empowering women, youth, and vulnerable individuals through a holistic, socio-economic approach. Diseases, literacy, unemployment, poverty, ignorance, wars, and natural disasters in Uganda have resulted in situations of vulnerability and moral degeneration. The most affected people are the children, women, youth, and the elderly. Many current community initiatives fall short in coping with the ever-increasing number of poor women, needy youths, and vulnerable children. BID Uganda was born out of the need to reach out to these neglected, forgotten, HIV/AIDS sufferers, orphans, abandoned street children, homeless, and those in extreme poverty within the communities and our society who are hurting in life. At BID Uganda, we are always looking for volunteers to help us administer our programmes and get involved in the community.
