As a volunteer on the teaching program in Kenya, you’ll have the opportunity to assist local teachers in schools or even lead your classes if you feel comfortable. Most volunteers teach English or Mathematics, but if you're skilled in another subject, you're encouraged to share that knowledge as well. Classes typically run from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and serve students in grades 1 to 4 (roughly ages 7 to 11). Volunteers may be placed in local schools or orphanages with attached schools, depending on their interests. Some orphanages without schools still welcome volunteers to lead informal educational sessions for the children, offering them learning opportunities they might not otherwise receive. Teaching methods and classroom environments may differ significantly from what you're used to, so flexibility and open-mindedness are key. To ensure a meaningful impact and a rewarding experience for both you and the children, a minimum commitment of two weeks is required. This program is an enriching way to support education in under-resourced communities while gaining firsthand insight into a different cultural and educational setting.
