A Guide to Studying Nutrition Abroad
Overview
Nutrition study abroad programs provide students with access to pertinent courses that may or may not be available in their home country, that are taught from a new perspective that takes into account alternative social issues and cultural considerations. As international understanding of the field, including the effects of food and nutrition on health and disease in a specific location and culture, will expand student’s employability and job opportunities in the future. Students will also have the opportunity to supplement their required courses with more location-specific or specialized courses such as Chinese diet therapy or West African food safety.
Studying nutrition abroad will allow students to dive deeper into the field and examine important questions. Such as how does culture affect nutritional choices and behavior? Or how do other countries approach food science and research? Studying abroad is the chance to explore the field on a global scale, and the benefits of doing so will be both immense and long-lasting.
Locations
Studying nutrition abroad can be a very rewarding experience no matter where you choose to go; but, to get the most out of your time abroad, it is important identify your specialized interests within the field and select a location where you can expand your experience and knowledge in that area. Although each student’s interests are unique and there many be specialized nutrition courses offered in many destinations around the world, here are a few of the most popular locations to study nutrition abroad:
Kenya. Students who choose to study nutrition in Kenya will have the chance to take courses at the University of Nairobi, where they will have the opportunity to engage in fieldwork, research, and coursework alongside local students and professors. It is not uncommon for nutrition coursework in Kenya to take students out of the classroom to work on development projects involving food safety, disease preventative, and other sub-fields of nutrition, so students will gain both academic and experiential knowledge by studying abroad in Kenya. You may even decide on a specialization within the field during your time abroad!
Botswana. Students who study nutrition in in Botswana will have a distinct opportunity to apply nutrition principles learned in the class life in the real world, as many study abroad programs supplement coursework with internships, volunteer placement, or other fieldwork opportunities. By working with local community members as well as a variety of organizations and institutions, students will gain a great deal of insight on the nutritional struggles faced by locals and also have the opportunity to contribute to increase nutritional knowledge and understanding.
India. Nutrition study abroad programs in India give students the chance to explore the field in very unique ways. India has an incredible wealth of nutritional history and an enormous food culture, and many practices and philosophies related to nutrition and food have in fact originated in India. Home to some of the top research universities in the world, India is definitely not a bad choice for nutrition students who are interested in conducting research and exploring the very scientific side of the field.
Australia. The Land Down Under has high aims of being the healthiest country on the planet by 2020. And let’s be honest: they aren’t going to earn the esteemed title if they don’t get their nutrition in tip top shape (which sadly means cutting back on Golden GayTimes and Milo). Aussie diets will seem familiar to most westerners, but an increased emphasis on supplements, vitamins, and minerals make it a fascinating destination for studying nutrition abroad.
Jordan. The Mediterranean diet has lasted for millennia, and it’s not by accident. Locals love a diet high in fish intake, complex grains, simple vegetables, and natural sugars (dates, honey, and apricots, oh my!), and their long lifespans are no-brainer indicators that it’s working. Learn the secrets of these ancient food preferences as you dive deep into the world of Middle Eastern cooking and nutrition through study abroad in Jordan.
Programs
Due to the nature of the discipline, it can be hard to find upper level nutrition classes abroad, so students are encouraged to study abroad earlier on in their academic careers. However, students with a strong background in chemistry and a firm understanding of the biochemical interactions of all the micro and macro nutrients with the human body are in good shape to continue their nutrition education abroad.
Those who decide to study nutrition abroad should seek out programs and courses that pair well with degree requirements at their home university (regardless of when they study abroad), introduce them to unique nutritional perspectives, and expose them to possible specializations within the field. Students can also choose to take nutrition courses within specific subfields, such as traditional healing practices, community nutrition, and public health policy.
Overall, the types of nutrition courses available and the type of approach each institution will have to the subject will vary greatly by location, so be sure to select a location that provides the perspective and courses you hope to explore during your time abroad. Lastly, it is important for students to take full advantage of their time abroad, by taking courses that expand their perspective of nutrition in their host country and also give them the opportunity to interact with the field in the real world, through internships, service-learning, field trips, and other learning opportunities outside of the classroom.
Insider Tips
Cross-Cultural Understanding. The fact of the matter is, not everyone around the world shares the same principles and ideologies about life, and this certainly applies to the field of nutrition. Each culture approaches different aspects of nutrition differently; consider the fact that some countries revere and praise those who are overweight (in contrast to the U.S.), since it is seen as a sign of power and wealth (you have money to buy food to “over nourish” yourself). Additionally, different cultures face different nutritional issues. For example, while American nutritionists are dealing with an obesity epidemic, nutritionists in other countries are facing malnutrition issues and foodborne illnesses. Spending time out of the country and out of your comfort zone will allow you to increase your cross-cultural understanding, both generally and within the field, to make you an even better future nutritionist.
Career Enhancement. Especially pertinent in science fields and fields that involve a large amount of research, international experience is an incredible asset to any student’s arsenal of skills when it comes to their future career. Adding study abroad experience to your resume will show future employers that you have what it takes to work on a team in a new environment and that you are receptive to new ideas; not to mention that you are knowledgeable about foreign nutrition practices and the field in general.

The best experience ever!
August 20, 2026by: Adriana Acles - United StatesProgram: USAC Costa Rica: Heredia - Latin American Studies & Ecology
Studying abroad can seem scary and intimidating, however the Costa Rican culture and USAC staff made my journey so welcoming, easy, and fun! The staff were truly so kind and genuinely cared about their students. Any question, concern, or recommendations were happily answered and they followed up with everything. They made my experience so enjoyable and allowed me to fully focus on my academics and experiences.
Viterbo changed my life!
August 19, 2026by: Serah Blackstone-Fredericks - United StatesProgram: USAC Italy: Viterbo-History, Art, Photography, & Journalism
I wrote this while I was abroad, and it felt correct to share in this space for anyone considering Viterbo. What a blessing to be studying abroad in Viterbo. Recently, I have been reflecting on what dropping into a community longterm offers. In having the opportunity and capacity to build a rhythm in a medieval Etruscan town, I am connecting with locals and learning so much about how life moves here in Viterbo. Italy, like the US has a lot of different vibes and paces from town to town and city to city. Viterbo is no different. Study abroad offers a unique opportunity to drop into a region and to feel out what life is like in a space very different than your own. Speaking Italian has offered me an incredibly unique lens to conversations with locals and those who are considered locals from other regions. Overall, they echo the same sentiments about Viterbo, something I have yet been able to see, and will need to process when I am away. Daily, everything closes down in the early afternoon, which is the hottest part of the day. It’s been incredibly hot overall, with some days reaching 38 degrees celcius. I feel I have adapted overall, but today was especially hot and last night was hard to sleep. As an anthropologist and musician, there have been so many opportunities to drop into playing music and connecting with historical sites, stories, and more. It was a bumpy transition into Italy as the student loan changes arrived on July 1st and I have been connecting with students who are expressing how their financial aid packages will be changing this fall. It’s a major moment of change in the world, and I am thankful to be experiencing it from a new space where I am gently adapting and becoming used to how many people enjoy smoking overall. I'll never be the same!

Memories that will last a lifetime!
August 01, 2026by: Tanner Lebo - United StatesProgram: USAC Spain: San Sebastián - Spanish Language & Psychology
San Sebastián is a great place to study abroad if you live diverse cultures and languages, great food, great wine and cider, and many more factors. Right in the heart of the Basque Country, it has much to offer. You can go out for a nice night with your friends and have Pintxos and drinks, or visit the nearby towns that hold much cultural significance. No matter what you decide to do, you won’t be disappointed!

August 01, 2026by: Madelinn Cassell - United StatesProgram: USAC Spain: Alicante - European & Mediterranean Studies
It was the best time of my life. I was able to learn so much not only from the amazing teachers but also from the welcoming community of Alicante. The field trips were also very fun, and ended with the most beautiful views of the ocean and the city. I am forever grateful for this opportunity and genuinely encourage everyone to study abroad at one point in their college career.

Worth going
August 01, 2026by: LilyAnn Douglas - United StatesProgram: USAC Costa Rica: Heredia - Latin American Studies & Ecology
I had a lot of fun and got to go on trips (apart from the program, mostly) to see a lot of awesome places during the weekends this summer. I learned a lot more Spanish and improved my speaking pace, while also being able to understand a lot more and at a much quicker listening pace as well. That is the thing I think I am most proud of is my improvements with the language. But I am glad I studied abroad because it also gave me a LOT of opportunities to get out of my comfort zone and try new things. I have grown a lot as a person even in just 2 and a half months here. The nature and wildlife here are incredible and worth seeing.
Best Decision I've Ever Made!
July 20, 2026by: Sarah Carlson - United StatesProgram: USAC Spain: Alicante - European & Mediterranean Studies
The five weeks that I spent in Alicante were some of the best weeks of my life. The friends I made, the experiences I had, and the things I saw are truly unimaginable. You cannot explain how life changing something like this is until you are there. I was really on the fence about going abroad and I am so incredibly grateful that I made the choice to go. This program is ran wonderfully. I loved my classes, I always felt so supported by our advisors, and we had the most wonderful landlord. If you are even considering going abroad, do it!! I will always have a special place in my heart for Alicante and my time abroad.
An Amazing Experience.
July 17, 2026by: Kara Hunt - United StatesProgram: USAC Italy: Reggio Emilia-Education, Communication & Health
I've had an incredible time studying abroad in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Every day I find myself in a new adventure, meeting new people, and immersing myself in the culture here. USAC has done an incredible job at making me feel safe, supported, and comfortable. Academically, I feel scaffolded to learn new information about the community and the Reggio Emilia approach, combining the perfect mix of theoretical and practical study. Socially, this community has been an amazing place, filled with weekly events, concerts, and just a welcoming town feeling in general. This has definitely been an experience of a lifetime.
Heartwarming Community
July 16, 2026by: Marissa Hart - United StatesProgram: USAC Italy: Reggio Emilia-Education, Communication & Health
The best part about Reggio Emilia is it is not super crowded with tourists. It’s a small city full of life where you can meet Italian locals and truly immerse yourself in the culture. I loved being able walk and get gelato whenever I wanted, then explored using easy access to bus transportation to the mall and movie theater and then to the train station too. The local cuisine is also phenomenal, erbazzone is devine and each Wednesday during the summer the piazza’s are full of energy with dancing, concerts and so much more. The planned field trips were amazing from trying balsamic vinegar to even exploring a castle there is something for everyone. The support from the program directors is excellent, they were always there for all my questions and made the program feel like home.
Best time ever.
July 16, 2026by: nathan barton - United StatesProgram: USAC Spain: San Sebastián - Spanish Language & Psychology
This was the best summer and possibly expierience I have had in my life. I studied in San sebastian for 2 sessions over the summer and loved it. Met the best people who I can consider my friends for life now while learning so much. I got fully immursed in the culture here while attending so many cool events I never thought I would be able to like participating in the running of the bulls and being in spain to see the spain soccer team make it to the finals in the world cup. I learned how to surf and more importantly speak more fluent in another language. I highly recommend this program!!!
Best experience I could have wished for.
July 16, 2026by: Madelinn Cassell - United StatesProgram: USAC Spain: Alicante - European & Mediterranean Studies
Every person was SO helpful and supportive. Luis and Veronica were amazing and so were the professors. They did a fantastic job with the tours and trips, they were always so fun. There was also just enough time that me and my friends I made were able to explore on our own and experience the holidays and festivals Alicante had to offer.
Life Changing Experience
July 16, 2026by: Emily Thompson - United StatesProgram: USAC Costa Rica: Heredia - Latin American Studies & Ecology
I decided to study abroad to better my Spanish skills while also immersing myself in Latin American culture. Costa Rica has done just that! My Spanish has improved so much, and I have been able to immerse myself firsthand in what I have learned in my Latin American Cultures classes back at my home university. I would totally recommend this immersion program!

It was a great experience and I made some good friends. Being in a new culture was very beneficial for me. I miss it already and wish I stayed for longer but I also got way to hot towards the end of the adventure.
Life changing experience!

Incredible experience!
July 03, 2026by: Maggie Hernandez - United StatesThe Molise Italian Studies program was a wonderful way to be immersed in the Molise region, some of the Puglia region, and Rome. By visiting some of the smaller, lesser-known areas in these regions, I got to see firsthand how people live, work, and support their communities through the activities and social work experiences. I can say I grew as a person and have a new outlook on my everyday life at home. It was evident that Italians in these regions value community and connection. I appreciated the opportunities to participate in activities at some of the agencies, such as at LAI and in Capracotta, rather than simply observing the activity. Our tour leader, Andrea, was kind, patient, organized, and knowledgeable throughout the entire trip.
Grazie, Maggie! We are so glad to hear this trip made such an impact on you, and we can't wait to hear about your plans moving forward!
So much fun!
July 02, 2026by: Alex Santoro - United StatesI had an absolutely amazing time; I made so many incredible memories that I truly won't ever forget. The friendships I made were so awesome, and the opportunities to experience true culture were life-changing. Both of my professors were absolutely wonderful, and our guide was incredible. Everyone was so amazing and truly tried their best to give us the most rewarding experience possible, and they exceeded my dreams.
Grazie, Alex!
Wonderful, meaningful trip!
July 01, 2026by: Jen McLaughlin - United StatesMyself and my colleague brought a group of ten university students on a trip with Molise, and we could not be happier! Our guides were knowledgeable and kind. Every single person we encountered along the way as we traveled was welcoming and gracious. So many laughs were shared amongst our students and the Italian community, and we never once felt as if we were not in steady, capable hands with the company. Upon returning home from Italy, we immediately arranged our next trip with Scott and Megan, and plan to continue this trip regularly to allow students to continue to experience all the amazing things our first group did.

Thank you, Jen! Looking forward to working with Wilkes again in 2027!
Abroad Dreams Come True
July 01, 2026by: Cialyn Floyd - United StatesAs a student who dreamed of going abroad for years, I never considered a trip like this would be at my fingertips. Many know that traveling abroad is a big decision because it involves location costs return of investment and with being in school of the timeline of when it’s going to happen. I decided to make my minor Hotel restaurant management sophomore year of college, but wasn’t sure of how I was still going to make my broad dream come true. Fall semester of 2024 when I was in one of my HRM studies I wondered what options there could be to study the subject abroad. That’s when I discovered the Molise Italian Studies program NAU in Italy: Economics of Gastronomy. After promptly siding up, I was introduced to a fully guided program with pre-arrival meetings that fully explained the details and necessary precautions of going abroad. Which included an itinerary of the daily activities the lessons that would be focused on and places of accommodation. All details, which transferred extremely well into the actual trip. Each lesson was fully in depth and offered different opportunities. My favorite day was probably the day we visited Di Iorio Tartufi - Italian Truffle where we learned how truffles were safely found and made into a meal. I came home with at least 5 jars!! I highly enjoyed the environment, the greenery, and absolutely the delicious assortment of truffle products. At the end of the day, this program offered me a week of excitement and verity of locations across molise. I couldn’t have asked for a better program to introduce me to the world of traveling.
Grazie, Cialyn! So glad to be a part of your HRM journey (& we dream of truffles too)!
Boss semester
June 27, 2026by: Ezra Bradford - United StatesProgram: Study Abroad Semester Program
I had a pretty great semester at UL. I thoroughly enjoyed the classes and the professors, but also learned a lot about myself and the Irish people. I joined the Christian Union pretty early on and was welcomed into fellowship with that group. I accompanied some friends of that group into smaller towns I may not have otherwise visited and helped lead churches playing piano. I was welcomed into homes and I really felt loved. I also got to see much of the countryside and felt it easy to travel around to sight see. My time in Ireland is a time where I grew in knowing myself but also my understanding of the world. I loved learning Irish traditions, culture, and history, and I know that I could never know nearly as much by staying home.
