How to Study High School Abroad This Winter
Overview
Prepare for a Winter High School Program Abroad
Understand the benefits
Joining a winter high school program isn’t just a way to fill time. It can shift how you see the world and yourself. Here’s how:
- Stay on track academically. Programs often align with your school curriculum, so you won’t fall behind while abroad.
- Build real-world skills. Independence, communication, and problem-solving grow fast when you’re outside your comfort zone.
- Stand out later. Early international experience adds perspective and depth to future college or job applications.
Locations
Choose a Location
Your winter program experience will vary a lot depending on where you go. Some destinations focus on culture, others on language, and some are built for outdoor adventure.
Japan
From city life in Tokyo to peaceful temples in Kyoto, Japan blends tradition and innovation. Winter is also a great time to experience seasonal festivals and maybe even catch the snow in the mountains.
Costa Rica
If you're looking for warmth, head to Costa Rica. It’s dry season in many parts of the country, which means the perfect time for outdoor programs focused on sustainability, language, or wildlife.
China
With a mix of ancient history and fast-paced cities, China offers a dynamic setting for winter programs. Explore culture, language, and local traditions while visiting landmarks like the Great Wall or enjoying regional cuisine during Lunar New Year celebrations.
Focus
Choose a Focus
Whether you want to sharpen your language skills, help others, or explore a future career path, there’s a program for you.
Language & Cultural Immersion
Learn a new language or improve your fluency by living and studying in a country where it’s spoken daily. You'll pick up vocabulary naturally and gain deeper insights into local customs.
Community Service & Volunteering
Give back during your winter break by joining service projects focused on environmental, educational, or community development efforts. It’s a meaningful way to travel while making a difference.
Student Exchange
Winter high school student exchange programs offer a chance to live like a local while attending classes abroad. Build language skills, adapt to a new school system, and experience everyday life in a different culture while making lifelong international friendships.
Getting Started
Tips & Advice
Joining a high school program over winter break can feel like a big leap, but planning it doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s a simple way to approach it:
1. Get matched
Use the GoAbroad Online Advisor to receive curated program suggestions that match your grade level, timing, and travel goals.
2. Choose a program
Create a MyGoAbroad account to organize your top picks. You can compare details side by side and keep notes on what stands out.
3. Funding & scholarships
Funding help is out there. Submit the Scholarships & Deals Application to unlock opportunities, and check with your school counselor to see if outside funding is available for short-term study or travel.
4. Apply
When you’re ready to move forward, head to the program listing and click "Apply Now" or "Inquire Here." That will kick off the process, and most providers will reach out with next steps like interviews, paperwork, or a pre-departure orientation.
5. Get your essentials
Sort out the essentials early. That means applying for a passport, checking visa requirements, confirming your housing, purchasing insurance, and checking out flight options.

Best summer of my life – I actually miss school now
May 16, 2026by: Emma Johanson - United KingdomI'm 17 and was nervous about spending 4 weeks in China without my parents. But honestly, it was incredible. My homestay family was so welcoming – my host mum packed me lunch every day. Mandarin classes were actually fun, not boring. We learned phrases we could use right away. Weekends we visited the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. I made friends from France, Germany, and Brazil. Came home speaking basic Mandarin and feeling way more confident. Already saving up to go back for a gap year. Highly recommend.

March 14, 2026by: Cristian Toroser - United StatesProgram: High School Exchange in Chile
My family was extremely nice. The directors were extremely nice. The school was very nice. I had the time of my life. I made many friends even though I didn’t speak amazing Spanish. It was still an amazing experience and I would do it again.

Can't recommend more!
March 06, 2026by: Nika FitzGerald - AustraliaProgram: Teen Summer Program - Japanese + Activity + Homestay
I can honestly say that coming to Local Life Japan was one of the greatest decisions of my life! As a 19 year old on my gap year after high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life when my mum showed me this place. A week later I was on a plane, in foreign country whose language I didn’t speak. The next month was a wonderfully chaotic whirlwind of experience and rapid learning. In a month I went from knowing only Hiragana and Katakana to being able to have full conversations in Japanese and make friends in a whole new part of the world. I couldn’t recommend Local Life Japan more! From the caring and attentive teachers, to the fast paced and engaging lessons to the wonderful local and cultural experience, this place has it all!

I had a time of my life!
March 06, 2026by: Liam Roche - United StatesProgram: Teen Summer Program - Japanese + Activity + Homestay
I had an absolutely fantastic experience with Local Life Japan's teen summer program! I found this program as a rising senior in high school looking to continue my study of the Japanese language, and it completely exceeded my greatest expectations. The staff is very warm, caring and flexible, and the teachers are engaging and helpful; they would even research the answers to difficult/obscure questions and share their findings the following morning. They were able to accommodate every students' level of Japanese proficiency while providing additional challenge to those who wanted it. The cultural activities were also amazing! There were loads of fun adventures, from Zen meditation to tea ceremonies to bowling. My personal favorite was probably our visit to Himeji Castle, which was both scenic and loaded with fascinating historical and architectural knowledge. I seriously cannot recommend this program enough to people who want a healthy mix of language learning and cultural immersion. I am incredibly lucky to have found this gem. The sense of community is incredibly powerful, and I can't help but want to find an excuse to visit again. Thank you Local Life Japan!

My Educational Experience at Smart Schools International
December 19, 2025by: Sarah Samad - AfghanistanHi, I'm an 11th-grade student at SSI. Although I joined Smart Schools International (SSI) only a few months ago, it has already turned out to be one of my best decisions. It is a place I sincerely and highly recommend to any student willing to learn! Whether due challenges, responsibilities, or limitations beyond their control, Many students lose access to education. What makes this school special is that it provides an opportunity for students anywhere in the world to continue their education through an officially recognized, standard and structured academic system ensuring learning remains available to those who are willing to study. As an online school, the learning system is easy to adapt to and well-organized. Here I listed my my thoughts and experiences about SSI: 1.The platform is student friendly, which allows students to study at their own pace and manage their schedules effectively. 2.The Flexibility is a major strength; students can study anytime and anywhere, fitting their education around their llives. 3.The teaching approach is clear, with topics explained step by step. For me Learning feels like solving a puzzle piece by piece; it makes complex topics interesting and fun to learn rather than overwhelming. 4.Assignments, exams, and quizzes are designed in way that reinforce learning rather than creating stress. I have personally learned many key points from them. 5.Teachers and staff provide consistent care and support. Each student is assigned a proctor who regularly checks in and offers encouragement. For example my proctor, Ms. Laura Payne, has been incredibly supportive, ensuring I feel noticed and motivated throughout my studies. Overall, SSI offers a supportive and inclusive environment that truly adapts to student needs. I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to study here and hope my experience helps other students seeking a reliable educational option.
My Smarts school take
December 19, 2025by: kalimullah Samad - AfghanistanThis online school offers a smooth and effective learning experience. The website is easy to use, and all lessons are well organized, making it simple to stay on track. The recorded video lessons are clear, informative, and helpful for understanding topics without pressure. Studying through videos allows me to learn independently and manage my time better. I can review lessons whenever needed, which really helps with revision and confidence. The teaching style is straightforward and student-friendly, making learning from home comfortable. Overall, this online school is a reliable choice for students who prefer flexible, video-based education. It provides quality learning in a calm and supportive way.
My experience with SSI
December 19, 2025by: Abdul Karim Samad - AfghanistanFor me SSI is the best choice for studying because they provide the best studying material for their students, they are responsive, and communicate the best way they can, and thats a very effictive way for reaching to their students and help them understand better, especially for someone such as myself who is studying online from abroad the SSI has provided the best studying enviroment for me.
This Didn't Feel Like School — It Felt Like Discovery
December 16, 2025by: Farinaz Zirak - AfghanistanI just finished my first year at smarts school international Online, and I can honestly say I've never learned this well before. The traditional classroom setting never quite clicked for me, but this self-paced program was a complete game-changer. The biggest difference was the shift in my own mindset. It stopped feeling like a chore—"I have to do this assignment"—and started feeling like curiosity-driven exploration. When a topic grabbed my interest, I could dive deep immediately, following my own "oh, I'm curious, let's find answers" instinct without waiting for a bell to ring or a class to move on. I was learning for me, not just for a grade. A fantastic example was the science curriculum. I didn't just read about experiments; I got to actually write detailed lab reports from scratch, which taught me how scientific thinking is really communicated. Even more surprisingly, I performed virtual lab experiments right on my laptop. Using interactive simulations, I could practice procedures, manipulate variables, and see the results in real-time. It was hands-on learning in a digital space, and it made complex concepts stick in a way a textbook diagram never could. This experience showed me that education can be flexible, engaging, and truly built around how I learn best. I gained academic skills and a newfound confidence in my own ability to seek out knowledge. If you're a self-motivated student who craves a more personal and explorational learning journey, I couldn't recommend this more. Pros: · Self-paced structure fuels curiosity and deep learning · Engaging, modern curriculum (loved the virtual labs!) · Develops real-world skills like scientific writing · Freedom to explore topics of interest in-depth Cons: · Requires strong self-discipline and time management · Not the traditional "social" school experience (but clubs & forums help!) Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A Life-Changing Pathway to my American High School Diploma
December 03, 2025by: Andrea Pestañas - PhilippinesGraduating from Smart Schools International has been an amazing experience. The flexible online setup allowed me to manage my time easily while still receiving a quality American education. The lessons were clear, and the teachers were always supportive and quick to help whenever I needed guidance. SSI didn’t just help me finish high school—it boosted my confidence and prepared me for college and future opportunities. I’m proud to be an SSI graduate and highly recommend the program.
2019 term in Chile
October 30, 2019by: Charlie H - United StatesProgram: High School Exchange in Chile
Nacel has really been very helpful during the application process and my stay in Chile. I almost missed my chance to do the 2020 term in Chile, because I forgot to look for my perfect study abroad program in ahead of time and by then I was very busy with my homework at school. But.. Anyway, Nacel opened the doors for me when the rest of the agencies didn't accept me because “I was late”. It's really impressive landscapes over there. We flew over the Andes Mountains! I have never seen such a beautiful country in my life. I landed on a Saturday afternoon at Santiago airport. There was my host family Los Arenas and my local coordinator. I had done Skype before with my host family. As I already knew them, it was very normal for me to run to greeting them. They showed me their love and affection with a lot of kisses and hugs. Chilean people are very kind and warm. We went to their house, they lived in a neighbourhood where you could clearly see the Andes far away, but near! I don't know how many photos I've taken of that beautiful landscape. The next day, Domingo, they organized a delicious barbecue in the garden of the house. I met cousins and family friends. At first, I think it happens to all of us, I experienced new feelings: JOY of being in a new country and meeting new people, sadness because my parents were in the United States with my siblings and at that moment I was starting a new life and living new adventures. The feeling of sadness lasted very little because I have so much to do in Chile: adapt to my new life, unpack my suitcase, study, check new vocabulary, help my host family at home, and hanging out with friends. The first day of school was amazing! We woke up in the morning, the host mother ironed my uniform and prepared a ''colacion'' bag where there was a cheese sandwich, an orange juice and an apple. They dropped us off to school, and the vice-principal welcomed me with some students. I felt very good about that warm welcome. I felt very good and happy to be an exchange Student in Chile. Attending high school wearing uniform is great. If you haven’t tried yet, you should! We all look the same. My classmates are very nice and fun. I remember one time when I didn't understand something, during recess, they brought the English teacher to translate their message to me. I will miss everyone with all my heart. I will also miss the food: Empanadas, sopaipillas, cazuela, Humitas..everything! Chilean people have shown me that it is possible to be happy and always move forward and overcome obstacles. I hope that my little brother Liam takes Spanish courses at school seriously so that he can soon participate in this Nacel exchange program and perhaps visit the Arenas in Santiago.
High School Program with Go Abroad China
March 05, 2016by: Natalie - CaliforniaI am a high school student back in the US and I decided to go to China during the summer holidays (last year). I joined Go Abroad China, their high school program. It was very interesting, first of all my Chinese language classes were held at a university BLCU in Beijing, but I was living with a Chinese family as my hosts. I had class everyday with some other classmates, they tried to keep people around a similar age and Chinese level together. I really liked learning Chinese. In the afternoons they would take us out to see the city, sometimes they organized activities right on campus. It was really cool being in a campus. My Chinese host family was so great to me, I liked the family that Go Abroad China help arrange for me. They could speak some English and shared a lot of Chinese food with me and made me feel welcome. My time there was great, I enjoyed and learned so much.
