Nepal: Traditions of the Himalayas (Summer)

Terraced rice paddies, fluttering prayer flags, dew-drenched mornings: discover the beauty of the Himalayas, experience life in remote mountain communities, participate in a meditation retreat, and study traditional arts with local masters. Since ancient times, travelers, monks, merchants, artists, and warriors have passed through Kathmandu in their journeys across the great Himalayan range. Some never left, and today, ethnic groups peacefully coexist in the peaks and valleys of this dynamic country. Nepal’s rich cultural diversity provides a strong foundation for a larger conversation about the underpinnings of identity, community, and spirituality. Our summer abroad program weaves a path between rural and urban environments and different religious communities as we explore how ancient traditions can survive in a rapidly developing society. During our time in the Kathmandu Valley, we meet with local activists and experts who share their insights on Nepal’s history, politics, and culture. Moving into rural Nepal, we trek through lush green forests and stunning valleys, before settling into a homestay with subsistence farmers.

A Guide to High School Programs Abroad in Nepal

Locations

Nepal is a relatively small country by landmass, but is densely populated for its size; it is one of the top 50 most populated countries in the world. Most cities and villages in Nepal are thousands of feet above sea level, and the country is also home to eight of the ten largest mountains in the world, including Mt. Everest.

Kathmandu is Nepal’s capital and its largest city, with a population exceeding 1 million people. It is a main transportation hub and cultural center of the country, boasting everything from ancient temples to crowded, vibrantly colorful marketplaces. Many high school programs in Nepal are located in Kathmandu, which provides a great opportunity because the city is truly something special. Although, many structures and buildings were destroyed during the earthquakes in 2015, and the city has a long road to recovery ahead.

Pokhara, which is only a short bus ride away from Kathmandu, is another popular city for high school programs in Nepal. Pokhara is significantly smaller than Kathmandu and is a popular launching point for trekkers looking to tackle some of the country’s tallest peaks. Sitting on the banks of the stunning Lake Phewa, Pokhara is a great alternative destination for nature lovers.

It is also possible for you to be placed in a rural area away from Nepal through certain types of programs, working closely with villagers in a variety of projects. Students living in a village in Nepal will likely have very basic conditions, which makes it an even more valuable experience. Living simply high up in the Himalayas will be quite the breath of fresh air!

Program: High School Volunteer and Adventure Experience in Nepal

So i went on this trip, sceptical, fearful etc. It's a big step for any 16-17 year old to take, but it was so worth it. I mean i am visiting their website 3 months after my trip, looking at potential programs I am thinking of doing. They are caring, safe but also human. By this I mean you don't feel belittled by them because you are young... they give you the chance to take that first step into adulthood. Secondly, if you are the type of teenager to go volunteer in Asia in your holidays, do not doubt you will meet people with the same kind of mindset as you. I now have a network of friends across the globe, that's pretty awesome! They are brilliant, reliable and kind. 5/5. Thanks GVI!
