CIEE HS Summer Abroad: Spanish Language in Barcelona

Tapas and ancient temples. Picasso and paella. Quirky, colorful buildings that look straight out of a Dr. Seuss book. In Barcelona, you’ll discover all this and more. Museums display bold works by Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, and Joan Miró. The buildings themselves are as impressive as the masterpieces inside. Delicious food abounds, with specialties unique to the Catalonian region like creamy custard and caramel desserts. Here, you’ll study the standard Spanish language, also known as Castilian, and get exposed to the regional Catalan language. Not to worry: In Barcelona, 98% of the population speaks “regular” Spanish, even if they also speak Catalan. The city is a fascinating place to discover linguistic differences while ramping up your Spanish vocabulary and conversational skills. After daily language and culture classes, you’ll head out on the town for group activities, museum trips, and downtime in local parks and cafes. On evenings and weekends with your homestay, you’ll get into the rhythm of Spanish life while shopping, kicking around a soccer ball, hitting the beach, and helping to prepare meals with host siblings and friends.

LITA: A Unique Approach to Language Immersion in Spain

LITA is a full-immersion program that offers high school students a dynamic experience far removed from English-speaking tourism. Participants advance their language skills through small, intimate groups of 12-16 students and three group leaders, with extensive homestay experiences in small towns, internships, and other off-the-beaten-path adventures. At the same time, they acquire a genuine understanding of Spanish culture as part of a safe, structured, and personalized immersive experience. The name LITA alludes to the philosophical foundation of our program: a Spanish word ending with the diminutive “ita” that often denotes something small and personal and is something or someone toward which one feels great affection. This informs all elements of our programs.

A Guide to Summer Language Immersion Programs for High School

Popular Types of Language Immersion Programs

Choosing a language to study is as tricky as choosing which flavor of gelato to try first when you land in Rome! It’s important to consider the scope of opportunity for you to utilize the skill once you’ve mastered it, and of course, your reason for learning in the first place. There’s no justification for learning French if you want to explore South America or Italian if you want to study in China.

Spanish is a popular choice, and being spoken by 41 million people around the world, it’s a handy skill to have for making friends, working overseas, and traversing large portions of the globe. Just imagine the possibilities trekking the Andes in Chile, scuba diving in Belize, or exploring the castles in Spain

French is the second most studied language in the world, so you’ll be joining many fellow earthlings by learning this language. In some of the French summer immersion programs for high school students, you could even take culinary classes to learn from professional chefs!

Italian is also another great romantic-based choice and equally useful when it comes to linguistic-focused degrees and globetrotting adventures, not to mention the delicious cuisines available! Authentic Italian pizza or pasta, anyone? Plus, who why not learn the language of famous fashion designers, artists, and musicians?!

If you fancy a slightly more off-the-beaten-track type of linguistic pursuit, the more unique choices include Chinese, Japanese, Greek, and German. You shouldn’t select a language based solely on the country you wish to visit — but there’s a lot of potential for your bucket list there — and no one would judge if that influenced your choice!

This Didn't Feel Like School — It Felt Like Discovery

December 16, 2025by: Farinaz Zirak - AfghanistanProgram: Your Online Pathway to Global Education
10

I just finished my first year at smarts school international Online, and I can honestly say I've never learned this well before. The traditional classroom setting never quite clicked for me, but this self-paced program was a complete game-changer. The biggest difference was the shift in my own mindset. It stopped feeling like a chore—"I have to do this assignment"—and started feeling like curiosity-driven exploration. When a topic grabbed my interest, I could dive deep immediately, following my own "oh, I'm curious, let's find answers" instinct without waiting for a bell to ring or a class to move on. I was learning for me, not just for a grade. A fantastic example was the science curriculum. I didn't just read about experiments; I got to actually write detailed lab reports from scratch, which taught me how scientific thinking is really communicated. Even more surprisingly, I performed virtual lab experiments right on my laptop. Using interactive simulations, I could practice procedures, manipulate variables, and see the results in real-time. It was hands-on learning in a digital space, and it made complex concepts stick in a way a textbook diagram never could. This experience showed me that education can be flexible, engaging, and truly built around how I learn best. I gained academic skills and a newfound confidence in my own ability to seek out knowledge. If you're a self-motivated student who craves a more personal and explorational learning journey, I couldn't recommend this more. Pros: · Self-paced structure fuels curiosity and deep learning · Engaging, modern curriculum (loved the virtual labs!) · Develops real-world skills like scientific writing · Freedom to explore topics of interest in-depth Cons: · Requires strong self-discipline and time management · Not the traditional "social" school experience (but clubs & forums help!) Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
