Popular Types of Language Immersion Programs
Choosing a language to study is as tricky as choosing which flavor of gelato to try first when you land in Rome! It’s important to consider the scope of opportunity for you to utilize the skill once you’ve mastered it, and of course, your reason for learning in the first place. There’s no justification for learning French if you want to explore South America or Italian if you want to study in China.
Spanish is a popular choice, and being spoken by 41 million people around the world, it’s a handy skill to have for making friends, working overseas, and traversing large portions of the globe. Just imagine the possibilities trekking the Andes in Chile, scuba diving in Belize, or exploring the castles in Spain!
French is the second most studied language in the world, so you’ll be joining many fellow earthlings by learning this language. In some of the French summer immersion programs for high school students, you could even take culinary classes to learn from professional chefs!
Italian is also another great romantic-based choice and equally useful when it comes to linguistic-focused degrees and globetrotting adventures, not to mention the delicious cuisines available! Authentic Italian pizza or pasta, anyone? Plus, who why not learn the language of famous fashion designers, artists, and musicians?!
If you fancy a slightly more off-the-beaten-track type of linguistic pursuit, the more unique choices include Chinese, Japanese, Greek, and German. You shouldn’t select a language based solely on the country you wish to visit — but there’s a lot of potential for your bucket list there — and no one would judge if that influenced your choice!
Top Locations for Immersion Programs
It’s not just about what you study, it’s also (largely) about where you get to study it! Immersing yourself in the language makes it much easier to fine-tune your skills as the opportunities to practice are all around you during summer language immersion programs for high school students. Consider cultural preferences, climates, and of course, what’s on the menu as you make your decision.
For Spanish language students, Spain is the obvious choice, although Mexico and Costa Rica are also home to some high quality language schools. The geographical proximity of Latin America to the United States makes it an attractive choice. Not to mention the amazing beaches of Mexico’s Caribbean coast, opportunities to zip-line through the jungle in Costa Rica, and endless supplies of tacos and guac on hand.
When it comes to French, the obvious and smart choice would be France. And the chance to see the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, or the Palace of Versailles? Oui oui! You’ll also want to consider the intrigue of romantic Paris versus the more traditional smaller towns and coastal areas. Plus, if you study in France, you’ll have access to nearby countries like Switzerland or Belgium to practice it as well!
With all the different architectural beauties from the Leaning Tower of Pisa to the Sistine Chapel to the Pantheon, it’s hard for anyone to look past Italy! Many of the programs offer plenty of 3D experiences for you to experience the language among the Italians in market places all under the Tuscan sun.
For the adventure seekers and unusual language skill chasers, there are more appropriate locations, such as China, Greece, Japan, and Germany. Between the Giant Pandas and terracotta warriors of China, Mount Fuji and the buzz of Tokyo, you aren’t short of epic opportunities to gain wanderlusting passport stamps.
Accommodation Options
Most programs include accommodation, taking away the logistical struggles and letting you focus on mastering the language rather than fulfilling your basic needs. The style of housing ranges from homestays to hostel-type dorms and shared apartments for summer language immersion programs for high school students. Homestays offer complete cultural immersion and endless opportunities to practice your linguistic skills, the chance to have a personal tour guide, and a “home away from home” environment, and bonus — home-cooked meals! Depending on your location pick, you might need to ready yourself to adapt to a local way of living, but that’s all part of the adventure!
Visas
Depending on the nationality of your passport and the country in which you wish to study, you may require a visa. The type will depend on the destination and the length of your program as well. Be sure to check in with your nearest embassy in plenty of time to be sure to obtain the permit you need. Your host school could also be a helpful resource in advising you on the correct type of visa for the program and provide any supporting documentation required to get your permit ready before you jet off.
GoAbroad Insider Tips
Learning a language abroad will help you to stand out from the crowd when it comes to university and job applications. The adaptability and applicability of the skills to innumerable scenarios should not be underestimated! Learning in a country which speaks that language accelerates your progress and allows you to practice and put your skills to use immediately. The biggest challenge is mastering the language, but you’ll have the support of your hosts and fellow students to help you.
Summer language immersion programs for high school students offer the perfect way to boost your skills while having an awesome adventure!

Great time in Barcelona
August 30, 2026by: Marie Holatová - Czech RepublicProgram: Young Adults Summer Program in Spain
My great time spent in Barcelona started from being picked from an airport and transported to accommodation, to accommodation i have only one con and thatt was a little complicated communication with staff, the school looked really good from outside and inside so it was nice being there, with the school i had a little problem and it was that i had a feeling i learnt almost nothing and from the trip i think i have improved more in emglish than spanish, but maybe that might be my fault too. After all i really enjoyed and made some friends and it was totally worth it.
Arcos in Santiago de Compostela
August 18, 2026by: J S - United StatesI had a very excellent time on my Arcos Journeys Abroad program, in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and on the Camino de Santiago. The host families were incredible, as were all the chaperones and teachers. The activities were always very fun, and there was a nice balance of structured time and free time. The Camino was also amazing, and I was unexpectedly delighted by that aspect of the trip. Thank you!!
Best experience ever
August 14, 2026by: Sofia Bertoli - ItalyProgram: Young Adults Summer Program in Spain
I spent two weeks of July in Barcelona with Expanish School and it was one of the best experiences of my life. In two weeks I learned a lot thanks to the teachers and the trips we did during the week and in the weekends. I got to know some amazing people that became my friends and with them I shared this magnificent experience. My host family was so lovely, they immediately made me feel comfortable and at home. Now that my experience has finished I find myself thinking about the days spent in Barcelona with Expanish. I already recommended the school to my friends because I think it is really really valid.

¡Hola, Sofia! What a beautiful review to read — thank you! :) We're so happy your two weeks in Barcelona turned into one of the best experiences of your life! It's wonderful that you learned so much thanks to our teachers and all the trips along the way, and even better that you made friends who shared it all with you. Hearing that your host family made you feel so at home too just makes this even more special. Thank you for already recommending us to your friends — that truly means so much to us. We hope to welcome you back to Expanish soon! ¡Un fuerte abrazo!

August 13, 2026by: Teodor Dorobisz - PolandProgram: Young Adults Summer Program in Spain
My host family was amazing, the teacher was very nice and helpful and I could learn a lot. The activities were fun and were helping me learn more about the place and the culture. Unfortunately not many people my age were attending them but they were still very fun
¡Hola, Teodor! Thank you for sharing this with us! :) We're so glad the program let you dive into the city, culture, and language all at once — and it's wonderful to hear your host family and teacher made such a positive impact on your experience. We're happy the activities added to that too, and we hear you on wanting more people your age around — we'll keep working on bringing in a wider crowd! Thanks again for choosing Expanish — hope to see you again soon! ¡Un fuerte abrazo!
My favorite academic experience
July 24, 2026by: Maxwell KrauskopfMy experience with world class programs can never be replicated. The program is so good that my only complaint is the heat outside, which isn’t even really a problem because the staff even think of that giving everyone fans. From the begging to the end I learned about Italian history and cuisine in an extremely interesting and enjoyable way. Everyone was kind and fun to be around, everywhere we went was presented in an incredible way and everything down to the food and rooms was extremely good
Italy trip 2026
July 24, 2026by: AndersItaly was such a great trip. I got such a well rounded trip. I learned a lot of cool stuff some stuff I liked to learn about some I didn't care for as much but yet I am still glad I got to learn it all. I also got plenty of time to do my own thing explore shop hangout relax. I also got to see so many cool places, 8 different Cities. My favorite part of the trip is that the instructors are more like friends than teachers. This is my second trip with this program and I love the instructors. They Genuinely make the trip as good as it is. They are the perfect amount of strict for safety and learning but also laid back for fun and stress free. I love these trips so much. Highly recommend.
Best trip of my life
July 24, 2026by: Aiden Peterson - United StatesIt was a very fun program where they taught us a lot about Itlay and I also enjoyed it so much that I did it twice. They gave us 3 to 4 hours of free time almost everyday was definitely one of the biggest highlight of the trip. They gave us enough time to do what we wanted. The staff was always supportive and you weren't forced into doing all of the activities if we didn't feel well or didn't want to. They tried to make the trip the most enjoyable as possible and we're very flexible with what we wanted to do. We also weren't in just one city we went all over the Italy visiting at least 9 cities.
I had the time of my life!
July 18, 2026by: Christian Steiniger - United StatesMy study abroad experience with World Class Programs was absolutely incredible! From start to finish, the staff was truly exceptional – so supportive, knowledgeable, and genuinely made the trip unforgettable. I honestly wish I could have stayed longer! I learned an immense amount, particularly in subjects like color theory and various painting periods, which has been invaluable. This program provided such a rich and immersive learning environment. Highly recommend!

A Life-Changing Experience
July 11, 2026by: Elizabeth Lowney - United StatesProgram: CIEE HS Summer Abroad: Spanish Language & Culture in Seville
My CIEE high school summer abroad changed my life. At 16 years old, I traveled to Sevilla, Spain with CIEE. I realized there that I wanted to pursue a career as a Spanish teacher, and now I am working at a public school in New York doing just that!! Since my amazing experience with CIEE as a student, I’ve also returned to the non-profit to work as a Program Leader supporting other students as they embark on this engaging, unique, and life changing experience. I can’t recommend CIEE enough!!

Best experience of my life, incredible language and cultural immersion
May 21, 2026by: Greta Conlon - United StatesProgram: LITA: A Unique Approach to Language Immersion in Spain
I did LITA's Northern Spain program in the summer of 2022 at 15 years old, and it remains the single best experience of my life. What sets LITA apart from every other program is how deeply personal it is. From day one, our leaders and Jordan knew exactly who I was, my interests, my personality, my goals. The level of individualized attention in a group of students is something you simply don't find somewhere else. My host family experience was incredible and genuinely changed how I see the world. We traveled across all of Northern Spain — Galicia, Valladolid, the Pyrenees, and Barcelona each stop carefully chosen to deepen our understanding of Spanish culture rather than just check tourist boxes. The whole program operates with a family mindset; you don't just visit Spain, you become part of it. If you're a high schooler serious about Spanish and craving an authentic, life-changing adventure, LITA is unlike anything else out there.
Life changing Language Intensive Program
May 21, 2026by: Lauren Heberlee - United StatesProgram: LITA: A Unique Approach to Language Immersion in Spain
LITA was one of the most transformative experiences of my life. What made the program so special to me was that it wasn’t just about learning Spanish in a classroom—it was about truly living the language and culture every single day. From staying with host families to exploring small, rural towns I felt completely immersed in authentic Spanish life. At first, the “Spanish only” environment felt intimidating, but it ended up being the reason I grew so much. I became more confident speaking Spanish than I thought possible, not because I was memorizing vocabulary, but because I was constantly connecting with real people and navigating everyday life in another language. By the end of the program, Spanish started to feel natural to me. What I loved most about LITA was the sense of community. The group leaders care about every student and create such a supportive, welcoming environment. I made incredible friendships with people from all over the country, and the shared experience of stepping outside our comfort zones brought everyone really close together. I also became so close with my host family, who made me feel at home from the very beginning. I can not recommend this program enough to anyone who is hoping to expand their Spanish language skills.
Best summer of my life – I actually miss school now
May 16, 2026by: Emma Johanson - United KingdomI'm 17 and was nervous about spending 4 weeks in China without my parents. But honestly, it was incredible. My homestay family was so welcoming – my host mum packed me lunch every day. Mandarin classes were actually fun, not boring. We learned phrases we could use right away. Weekends we visited the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. I made friends from France, Germany, and Brazil. Came home speaking basic Mandarin and feeling way more confident. Already saving up to go back for a gap year. Highly recommend.

Can't recommend more!
March 06, 2026by: Nika FitzGerald - AustraliaProgram: Teen Summer Program - Japanese + Activity + Homestay
I can honestly say that coming to Local Life Japan was one of the greatest decisions of my life! As a 19 year old on my gap year after high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life when my mum showed me this place. A week later I was on a plane, in foreign country whose language I didn’t speak. The next month was a wonderfully chaotic whirlwind of experience and rapid learning. In a month I went from knowing only Hiragana and Katakana to being able to have full conversations in Japanese and make friends in a whole new part of the world. I couldn’t recommend Local Life Japan more! From the caring and attentive teachers, to the fast paced and engaging lessons to the wonderful local and cultural experience, this place has it all!

I had a time of my life!
March 06, 2026by: Liam Roche - United StatesProgram: Teen Summer Program - Japanese + Activity + Homestay
I had an absolutely fantastic experience with Local Life Japan's teen summer program! I found this program as a rising senior in high school looking to continue my study of the Japanese language, and it completely exceeded my greatest expectations. The staff is very warm, caring and flexible, and the teachers are engaging and helpful; they would even research the answers to difficult/obscure questions and share their findings the following morning. They were able to accommodate every students' level of Japanese proficiency while providing additional challenge to those who wanted it. The cultural activities were also amazing! There were loads of fun adventures, from Zen meditation to tea ceremonies to bowling. My personal favorite was probably our visit to Himeji Castle, which was both scenic and loaded with fascinating historical and architectural knowledge. I seriously cannot recommend this program enough to people who want a healthy mix of language learning and cultural immersion. I am incredibly lucky to have found this gem. The sense of community is incredibly powerful, and I can't help but want to find an excuse to visit again. Thank you Local Life Japan!

Improving My Spanish and Confidence Abroad
February 15, 2026by: Matthew S.Program: CIEE HS Summer Abroad: Honors Spanish Language in Seville
I feel like my Spanish and my confidence have improved a lot. I’ve made friends, spend time hanging out with them, and feel much more comfortable speaking. One moment that really showed my progress was during my school exams. I take Lengua, and I’m the only American in my class. On my first exam, I got a 4.45, which was above the class average but still a failing grade. After studying a lot on my own and with friends, I took the next exam and improved to a 7.45. My teacher even told me how much I had improved, which felt really rewarding.
Amazing Experience and hard to leave.
February 14, 2026by: Aylin Nolan - Germany“Thank you Lisa for everything. I am currently at my layover in Toronto and I am leaving for Germany in an hour. Thank you for the amazing time in Canada and all the organization. I really enjoyed my trip here and i am so sad to leave. But at least i have these amazing memories and a lot of new connections to people from all over the world. That all would not have been possible without you and i am so grateful for you and that you pour your whole heart into the kids experiences in Canada. Thank you so much!!” Aylin - Germany

My Unforgettable CIEE Program in Japan
February 04, 2026by: Elka L.Program: CIEE HS Summer Abroad: Japanese Language & Culture in Kyoto
This program was a truly unforgettable experience. From going on excursions with people from all over America to living with a Japanese host family and attending a local high school, I got a real look into daily life in Japan. Spending time with school clubs and classmates made the experience even more meaningful, and I can say with full confidence it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’d be more than happy to share that experience with peers.
