Masters Degrees in Social Policy

Learn to integrate policy, scholarship, ethics, and participatory practice to achieve sustainable development goals. Starting in Quito, Ecuador, explore the challenges of one of the most biodiverse countries in the world while learning from faculty, guest lecturers, and experts in the field. Study ecological impacts, forest regeneration, sustainable land practices, and conservation on an excursion to northern Ecuador’s patchwork of cloud forests. The second semester unfolds in Africa, with time split between Cape Town, South Africa, and Lilongwe, Malawi. Over 15 weeks, you will engage in comparative analyses of design thinking, monitoring and evaluation, economics, resource management, health policy, and trade. In the final semester of this one-year program, you will spend 10 to 12 weeks in a full-time practicum in a role and location of your choice.

The SALISES program provides multidisciplinary supervisory support for students pursuing research degrees. The degree areas are Social Policy; Economic Development Policy; and Governance and Public Policy. It encourages applications to topics in various areas, with a specific thematic focus on navigating Globalization (Caribbean International Finance Centres, Caribbean Development Theory and Policy), Social Renewal (Law Reforms and Sexual and Reproductive Rights, Ways of Being in a Digital Age) and Sustainability (Coping with Climate Change and Micro-Insurance, Greening Caribbean Futures and Sustainable Livelihoods). Admission requirements for the MPhil are a Bachelor's degree or equivalent with at least an Upper Second Class Honours or relevant work experience. Direct entry requirements for the PhD include an appropriate postgraduate qualification and relevant work experience. Candidates registered for the MPhil can transition to PhD level upon demonstration of appropriate progress. A short research proposal is required upon application. Accepted students are required to complete 3 totaling 9 credits, including SALISES and other UWI courses upon approval of their supervisor.
