The Real Uganda's volunteers assist our partners with a variety of empowering community-based activities. Volunteers split their time between these locally requested interventions: Public health and clinical work: Volunteers work in rural clinics providing testing, treatment, counseling services, and prevention education. Nutrition, vegetable gardening, and community sanitation programs are also ongoing. We aim to support rural public health in Uganda. Teaching and childcare: Volunteers work in rural classrooms, choosing what ages and topics to teach. Art and sport are the most popular. Traditional teaching in Uganda is rote learning and memorization. We aim to encourage teamwork, fun, creativity, literacy, and general knowledge in primary schools. Organic farming: Volunteers work alongside women and community members to maintain gardens. Depending on the season, volunteers prepare the soil, plant seeds, spread mulch, weed, harvest, and chase birds and other pests. Learn from Ugandan farmers, and share your ideas as well. We aim to teach efficient land use, organic pest control, and nutrition.

Become a part of the community in Kabale, a town located in southwestern Uganda, and learn about their groundbreaking, integrated approach to addressing and improving maternal and child health. Due to insufficient government infrastructure and funding, nonprofit organizations have taken the lead in providing access to healthcare services, especially in remote regions. With CFHI’s local partner you will rotate through the main general clinic, as well as the newly built Maternal and Child Hospital where you will learn from physicians, nurses, medical officers, lab and ultrasound technicians. At the HIV/AIDS clinic, sit in on counseling sessions, shadow health workers who conduct testing and learn how to reduce rates of mother to child transmission. Accompany outreach local team in a rural village and explore how nutrition and HIV are closely linked. Other opportunities include rotating at a nutrition center that treats and prevents maternal and child malnutrition, visiting traditional birth attendants and healers, and joining a local radio program that provides public health education to the community.

PLATFORM for the NEEDY

PLATFORM for the NEEDY (PLANE) is passionate about the adolescents and youth of Uganda. We are seeking generous, passionate doctors and nurses to volunteer in this Sexual Reproductive Health Rights Education Project in Uganda. We also welcome interns seeking practical experience in the medical field. PLANE initiated this program after realizing that many children were dropping out of school, some teens were forced into marriages by their parents and relatives, and many teenage girls got pregnant. Most Ugandan youth, especially girls, are not aware of their rights. They tend to keep quiet when married off or forced into sexual acts. Thus, under this program, we organize youth conferences and discuss topics on career guidance, sexual reproductive health rights, financial literacy, IT tools, and profitable use of social media. Volunteer doctors and nurses, as well as interns, work in different schools to talk to students and tackle relevant issues such as family planning, delayed marriage, and self-esteem. The program offers a great opportunity to counsel local Ugandan students about their reproductive health and future.

Participating in our children's support volunteer project can impact you and the orphans themselves. We recommend coming for four weeks or more if you are to make a great impact on the lives of these children. The voracious need these orphans have to seek and learn about any subject matter—sports, music, or farming—is awe-inspiring and humbling. Our volunteers can work in every and any aspect of the children’s center; whether it is teaching the children and helping them with their homework, playing a game of tag, or simply sharing your time, experiences, and knowledge with them you are making a difference in their lives. Volunteering at our children's support volunteer project will give you an intimate insight into a new and exciting world. A world where childcare is a privilege and a gift, where orphans who have nothing will share whatever they can with a stranger, and where you can change the lives of people and children just by being yourself.

The Bugembe Initiative for Development (BID) is an action-oriented, community-based organization dedicated to empowering women, youth, and vulnerable individuals. Formed in 2011 with its base in Bugembe, Jinja District, the Bugembe Initiative for Development (BID) is an action-oriented, community-based organization dedicated to empowering women, youth, and vulnerable individuals through a holistic, socio-economic approach. Diseases, literacy, unemployment, poverty, ignorance, wars, and natural disasters in Uganda have resulted in situations of vulnerability and moral degeneration. The most affected people are the children, women, youth, and the elderly. Many current community initiatives fall short in coping with the ever-increasing number of poor women, needy youths, and vulnerable children. BID Uganda was born out of the need to reach out to these neglected, forgotten, HIV/AIDS sufferers, orphans, abandoned street children, homeless, and those in extreme poverty within the communities and our society who are hurting in life. At BID Uganda, we are always looking for volunteers to help us administer our programmes and get involved in the community.

In Africa, there’s a saying: Sometimes a true friend means more than family. For countless children facing poverty, early marriage, limited access to education, and adult responsibilities as early as age 12, a kind word can make a lasting impact. The Pen Pal Program was created to bring hope through simple, heartfelt letters. By writing just once or twice a month, you can offer encouragement on topics like education, health, love, and resilience—messages that remind a child they matter and that their future holds promise. More than 5,000 children are currently waiting to hear from someone who cares. After you sign up, you’ll receive profiles by email and can choose a child to write to, based on your time and interests. If you’re interested, the program also offers orientation calls to help you get started and learn how to make the most of your participation. Whether you're a student, teacher, parent, retiree, or part of an organization, your words have the power to uplift. Join the Pen Pal Program and help a child rise above hardship toward a brighter, more hopeful future.
