The animals at this wildlife sanctuary have been injured or orphaned, leaving them in need of some assistance if they have any hope for survival. The animals become tame during their rehabilitation so they cannot be reintroduced to the wild, but this does allow for an unforgettable experience since volunteers can work closely with the animals and establish relationships. The sanctuary provides aid to zebras, cheetahs, elephants, and many more animals in need. The program starts monthly, and volunteers can stay from 2 to 12 weeks. This allows for flexibility and duration that can fit into anyone’s schedule. The sanctuary is located near the small resort town of Hartbeespoort, locally known as Harties, which is only 40 minutes from the giant metropolis of Johannesburg. Volunteers can experience a little of each place through actually living inside the sanctuary and Johannesburg in their free time. Volunteers can work in a variety of interesting projects such as vulture kitchen, which provides vultures with a healthy supply of meat. The birds are endangered because many people poison them with bad meat.

Enjoy the best of both worlds with your children in this family volunteering and adventure program. Immerse yourself in the culture of Swaziland while helping build or renovate much-needed infrastructure, including homes or shelters for orphaned children. Witness wildlife animals, including the Big 5, during game drives in Kruger National Park. The Family Volunteering: Swaziland Building to Kruger Adventure program is an unforgettable combination of community service and safari experience. In Swaziland, help experienced builders with a range of building activities, from making blocks to fitting roofs. Adults work according to instructions and younger kids take on supportive tasks, with the assistance of parents. In South Africa, groups enjoy big game viewing, guided bush walks, and night drives. At the same time, learn about the plants and animals of the African savanna and the importance of protecting this beautiful yet fragile ecosystem. This project requires the motivation to work hard and follow instructions. Carpentry, building, electrical, and plumbing skills would be a great asset, but not necessary.

Everyone has heard of the Big 5—Africa's “must-see” animals! But are you ready for your disappointing fact of the day? They are called that because they were the most difficult to hunt. Because of this, “claim to fame” hunters have gone overboard, making each of these animals endangered and needing your help! This volunteer trip will put you in the heart of South Africa’s gorgeous Eastern Cape. It’ll be your job to track the movements of wild herds across a 6,000-hectare private game reserve on an open-top safari! You’ll make a meaningful impact by ensuring that the Big 5 will be around to hunt—with cameras, of course—for many generations! Make lifelong friends and memories while doing meaningful work. Get up close and personal with some amazing animals in a program that includes everything you can think of!

South Africa has celebrated an end to formal apartheid but, despite its rich natural resources and can-do attitude, the majority of the black population still faces huge challenges. Job prospects are still in low supply, housing and the standard of living are still far below expectations, access to running tap water is limited, decent flushing toilets are shared, and millions still live in slums. Much of the work and projects involve helping the overcrowded community of Imizano Yethu township where most of the residents live in makeshift iron shacks, sharing communal taps and toilets with hundreds of neighbors, where the roads are potholed, and where the basic infrastructure is rundown. Volunteers take on various tasks: - improve and maintain normal community and preschool (crèche) care centers - assist with the refurbishment of the Community Youth Center - rebuild shacks lost due to fires - replace simple roofing - waterproof homes - install concrete flooring - paint and refurbish local schools - participate in community and school sports programs like soccer, volleyball, field hockey, and physical education lessons
