Each day, about 2,000 kilograms of food is wasted in Portugal. Volunteers on this inspiring project travel around Lisbon visiting supermarkets, cafes, bars, and restaurants to collect unwanted or unused food. This food is then distributed to some of the city's poorest inhabitants. Volunteers help with food collection, preparing the food for distribution and giving it to the people who most need it. Not only does this project do amazing things for sustainability, but it also goes a long way to helping people in need. Volunteers can take part for one week to 12 weeks. Volunteers live in an eco-guesthouse in Lisbon with other volunteers. Three meals per day are provided.

This all-in-one semester begins with one month traveling Spain by train, followed by two months in Barcelona where you choose your pathway. You’ll build soft skills (communication, confidence, problem-solving), hard skills (Spanish, digital tools, cooking), and leadership abilities focused on positive impact. Choose one of three pathways: - The Internship Pathway offers full-time hands-on experience, real projects, and strong hours for future credit or professional goals. - The Entrepreneurship Pathway combines a part-time internship with entrepreneurship labs, mentorship, and Spanish classes, ending in a Shark Tank–style pitch. - The Special Interest Pathway lets you blend part-time internship, volunteering, and classes, or focus fully on volunteering plus Spanish or creative electives. The Food Rescue project addresses two critical issues: reducing food waste and fighting food poverty. Every day in Portugal, thousands of people benefit from food that would otherwise go to waste, collected from local restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets. As a Food Rescue volunteer, you’ll be part of a dedicated, volunteer-based movement committed to eliminating food waste and ending hunger. What to Expect: Community Impact: Help redistribute food to those in need. Volunteer Collaboration: Work alongside local volunteer teams to ensure food reaches the people who need it most. Operational Support: Assist in the collection, packing, storage, and distribution of food donations.
