In this program, you will be given the opportunity to change the lives of women in Kathmandu, where sexism and equality are big issues. Women are less likely to be employed and/or receive an adequate pay. This program aims to mitigate the effects of this discrimination by allowing you to empower these women and show them that they matter. You will teach English (and a few other subjects – see below for more details) and help these women thrive through enhancing their confidence. Volunteers’ responsibilities may include teaching the women how to use a computer (basic skills), teaching them about various health topics, talking to them about the rights that they have and/or conducting activities and workshops.

The land rises from the southern plains of the Terai, barely above sea level, to the top of Mt. Everest - the highest peak on Earth, in a distance of less than 130 miles. Most volunteer projects are available in Kathmandu, the capital and largest city in Nepal. The Women Empowerment program in Kathmandu offers you the opportunity to teach and mentor women of all ages who have had little or no access to formal education. Through conversational English, life skills, and creative teaching methods, you will help them build essential skills, expand opportunities, and become more self-sufficient. During the first week of this program, you will take part in a mandatory culture week designed to help you understand local customs—an essential foundation when working with vulnerable communities. Many women in Nepal leave rural areas to seek employment in cities, hoping to improve life for their families. Often, they have little or no formal education and work as housemaids, making it difficult to access better job opportunities in a society where education—especially in English—is crucial for advancement. You will play a key role in expanding their opportunities through structured English lessons and everyday conversation. All higher education in Nepal is conducted in English, making your teaching especially valuable. A trained teacher will support you in planning your lessons, with a focus on inspiring women of all ages and helping them rediscover their strengths. You will teach groups with varying educational backgrounds, using a provided course book as a guide, particularly helpful for first-time educators. Creative methods are encouraged to make learning engaging and meaningful.

The basic need for a children's development program stems from the following facts about Nepal. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, with approximately 25% of its population living below the poverty line. Therefore, the fundamental rights of many community children are often not met. Most children in rural communities aged 3 to 5 lack access to quality education. Approximately 5% of children never attend school. The children who attend school often drop out before completing high school. Only 46.2% of children complete their high school education. They instead help at home, support household chores, and babysit while their parents work on the farm. 37.4% of children aged 5 to 17 are involved in agricultural labor, with a significant proportion working on their family farms. 26.3% of children aged 10 to 18 are married or in a union with their partner. So, the children’s development is not well in place.

Years of insurgency and political uncertainty have caused the country to fall behind many of its neighbors when it comes to human rights. An uneasy peace now exists, but little has been done at government level to help the women of Nepal. This is where Friends for Asia comes in. Our volunteers work with disadvantaged women in a number of centers to educate, assist and help them lead their lives with dignity in a male-dominated society. Volunteering in Nepal - A Day in the Life Our Woman Empowerment Project allows our Nepal volunteers to really get to the heart of Nepal life. Volunteers will work closely with disadvantaged women to educate them and give them a new perspective on life. This can be done throughout the day through basic interaction and activities. Volunteers will also schedule classes in subjects that help the women help themselves, such as English, computer skills, office skills and other skills that will aid them in the path to employment or further education.

In this project, we are helping the forest community and the Senegal village of Kavre district near Banepa. After the earthquake, a lot of buildings were destroyed, and the local population needs help in rebuilding the village. We'll be assisting in developing effective agricultural methods; we will do environmental awareness and forest conservation work; we'll work together with local people to build a multi-purpose community house; we will be involved in construction work. The community house will also serve as a shelter in emergencies, a youth club, and a public medical exam room. We'll build an area for seniors, a garden near the house, and a rooftop for the meeting room. Other construction projects include making a water tank and rebuilding the Hindu temple. We will also build a much-needed wall around the community school and repair wood shelters for the village. In the nearby forest, we will build a fire line together with the local people. We'll prepare and perform plays aimed at raising awareness on environmental issues, hygiene, and emergency procedures during earthquakes. We'll also work with local women to empower and prepare them for the workforce.

Volunteers in Nepal immerse themselves in a vibrant culture. Most famous for Mt. Everest, the country captures hearts because of its people and customs. The Nepalese are known for cooking hearty, flavorful meals and greeting others with "Namaste." While tourism is booming, Nepal still remains one of the poorest countries. Volunteers mostly work in rural communities. Volunteers in Nepal can be caregivers at child care centers, teaching assistants at schools, and counselors for women and girls victimized by human trafficking.
