A Guide to Volunteering Abroad in Germany

Prepare for Volunteering

Set goals

When planning your volunteer experience in Germany, it's essential to set clear goals to get the most out of your experience! Here are a few basics to get going:

  • Identify your interests and skills you’d like to work on during this time and seek out peers or mentors to aid in growth.
  • Find a program that aligns with your values and network with the community.
  • Figure out if there are any personal soft skills you’d like to be intentional about and hone.
  • Consider how you’ll connect with the country—language, culture, food, etc.

Understand the benefits

Volunteering in Germany offers numerous benefits regardless of your path! Benefits everyone can walk away with are:

  • Cultural immersion. Experience Germany's rich culture and history through any volunteer program or wherever your interests lead you.
  • Professional development. Gain valuable work experience and skills in a structured setting while benefiting the community.
  • Networking and connections. Build connections with locals and international volunteers to build a larger social net.
  • Personal Growth. Enhance your adaptability and problem-solving abilities in a professional setting, in a different country, and around new people.
  • Positive Impact. Contribute to meaningful projects and social causes and aid German communities anywhere in the country.

Things to know

Wherever you volunteer in Germany there are a few basics everyone should know about before their trip.

  • Language skills - Basic German can be helpful but isn’t always required, as Germany is home to many languages spoken regularly.
  • Cultural etiquette - Germans value direct communication, punctuality, and respect for personal space; being loud in public is generally seen as rude.
  • Legal requirements - Make sure you have the necessary visa, permits, vaccinations, and health insurance before your trip.
  • Accommodation and money - Housing options include host families and volunteer accommodations, and while Germany’s cost of living is reasonable, budgeting ahead is wise.

An Unforgettable Camp Experience

November 22, 2025by: Andrea Sopena López - SpainProgram: Volunteer as a Summer Camp Counselor in Europe

My experience at the camp was amazing. It was incredible to meet people from different countries, share experiences, and create friendships that I’ll always remember. The children were full of energy and enthusiasm, always eager to try new activities, and the teamers were kind, supportive, and fun to work with. The camp offered the perfect mix of adventure activities and team challenges, making every day exciting and rewarding. One of the sweetest moments was on my birthday, when the group of girls I was taking care of surprised me with balloons, small gifts, and a very sweet celebration. It was incredibly thoughtful and touching, and I grew very fond of them — it’s a memory I will treasure forever. Overall, my time at the camp was awesome, filled with learning, unforgettable moments, and a strong sense of connection with both the children and the team. I left with valuable experiences, personal growth, and a heart full of gratitude.
