This an increasingly popular way for individuals to make a meaningful impact in communities around the world. With numerous organizations offering volunteer programs, it's essential to review and research these opportunities to ensure a safe and rewarding experience. *Pros:* 1. *Cultural Immersion*: Living and working with local communities provides an immersive cultural experience. 2. *Skill Development*: Volunteers can develop new skills and gain experience in areas such as teaching, conservation, and community development. 3. *Networking Opportunities*: Volunteers can connect with like-minded individuals from around the world. 4. *Personal Growth*: Volunteering abroad can be a transformative experience, fostering personal growth and self-awareness. *Cons:* 1. *Cost*: Many volunteer programs come with a hefty price tag, which can be a barrier for some. 2. *Safety Concerns*: Volunteers may face safety risks, such as health concerns or political instability, depending on the destination. 3. *Cultural Differences*: Adapting to local customs and way of life can be challenging for some volunteers. 4. *Quality of Programs*: Some volunteer programs may lack structure, support, or meaningful work, leading to a disappointing experience. *Recommendations:* 1. *Research Thoroughly*: Investigate the organization, program, and destination to ensure a safe and rewarding experience. 2. *Read Reviews*: Look for reviews from past volunteers to gain insight into the program's quality and challenges. 3. *Choose a Reputable Organization*: Select an organization with a proven track record, transparent policies, and adequate support for volunteers. 4. *Prepare Yourself*: Culturally, emotionally, and physically prepare yourself for the experience to ensure a smooth transition. By being aware of the pros and cons, doing thorough research, and choosing a reputable organization, volunteers can have a safe, rewarding, and life-changing experience abroad.

As a Social worker i often meet with clients to assess their needs, provide counseling, and develop individualized plans to address their challenges. This could involve sessions with individuals, families, or groups.

I made new friends, improved my Spanish, and learned a lot about a new culture and myself.
September 19, 2024by: KristinaI spent a total of 6 months in the Dominican Republic and can generally say that I love the country. I went to two different hospitals and then to the dentist. I hoped that I would get a real insight into medicine there and that this would help me decide what to study, but I have to say that this was unfortunately not the case. There was really absolutely nothing to do in the first hospital and we sat there for four hours a day just reading. On average, we had maybe two patients a day, nobody came when it was raining, wie weren‘t allowed to do anything and the hospital was still under construction. After 6 weeks, I was allowed to change hospitals, and Nacho, the local coordinator, made every effort to make the change possible! There were significantly more patients in this hospital. Over time, I was also allowed to carry out tasks on my own and was allowed to watch a surgery twice which was really interesting. Nevertheless, I have to say that a lot is promised on the website, with various medical areas in which you get an insight and that you can help in the ambulance, in the pharmacy or in the laboratory. None of this was the case and even though I enjoyed the work, it was relatively monotonous and not what was promised. The staff at the hospitals have become friendlier over time, but especially at the beginning they didn't really pay attention to you and as soon as you didn't understand something in Spanish, they rolled their eyes and turned away. Working at the dentist, on the other hand, totally surprised me. The two dentists were super friendly and tried to explain everything. I also got to know a lot of different types of treatment, was allowed to see everything up close and was able to assist with everything after just a few days, such as a wisdom tooth operation. I enjoyed working at the dentist's the most by far! Overall, I really liked the accommodation we stayed in, as we lived in the same building with all the volunteers and were therefore able to get to know lots of great people. However, the photos on the rgv website don't match the actual accommodation at all; the accommodation shown is completely different. Nevertheless, casa regular is a nice place and the locals who live in the same building are really friendly. Overall, it has to be said that the communication between rgv and Aldeas de Paz is not really good and rgv never tells you that they are working with Aldeas de Paz so you are really confused at first. In addition, rgv gives you contact details of people who are supposed to be the local coordinators, but these people don't even exist there, only the employees of Aldeas de Paz. The coordinators of Aldeas de Paz, on the other hand, are very nice and especially the coordinator of the marine program, always organizes excursions for all volunteers and takes care of everyone. Spanish lessons hardly ever took place at the beginning, but our coordinator arranged for a replacement and since then we have had a very nice Spanish teacher who gave good lessons. All in all, it was an absolutely unforgettable time in the Caribbean, where I made new friends, improved my Spanish and learned a lot about a new culture and myself but honestly not because of the projects
The volunteering work was great but could be improved by adding consistent tasks for volunteers to complete.
September 14, 2024by: SophiaProgram: Animal Rescue, Assistance, & Care
The staff team was great and always offered support, Nacho the coordinator was very nice and was always ready to help. The volunteering work was great but could be improved by adding consistent tasks for volunteers to complete, the hours for the work were very good since we only worked around the morning and the rest of the day we were free to do as we pleased. The living conditions were very simple but i liked that at Las terrenas all volunteers lived together so it was very easy to socialize and make friends with the others. Las terrenas as a town was incredible the beaches and the people were amazing. I loved that everything was not very far from the accommodation so it was very easy to get to the beach or to restaurants.
Do not hesitate! Best experience of my life!
March 16, 2021by: Silvia S. Terratiz - SpainProgram: Volunteer World: Best Volunteer Abroad Programs Worldwide
I probably had one of the best experiences of my life in Natuwa for a month, feeding the many animals that live there, taking care of them, discovering a different way of life than mine, more minimalist and peaceful. Rodolfo is an extremely understanding man who cares about the well-being of his voluntarios. We had the chance to do several extra activities outside the centre, such as snorkeling near to Isla Tortuga, or swimming at night with bioluminescent planktons, which were dazzling. The workteam is really friendly and allows you to feel integrated quickly and easily. However, you have to expect to work hard sometimes, for example planting trees, doing work to maintain the infrastructure, but this is only a part of the day. outside the centre
A wondrous experience
February 25, 2019by: Michael Ojeme - NigeriaProgram: Volunteer World: Best Volunteer Abroad Programs Worldwide
The time I spent in Dubai, Oman and Abdul Dhabi, I have a wonderful and experiential Joy with the people and I was able to showcased my skills and the people explore my knowledge to their satisfaction Little details of my experience Dubai Falcon Ballroom Hotel which was so great. Even more perfect was the fact that they had thought of everything in advance, I didn’t need to remind them I needed a fresh bed shread in the room (which I did have to do twice at the local hotel I stayed in my country, more on this later) as they had already taken care of that prior to our arrival. The bed, oh the bed! It was dreamy in every way, the most comfortable place I’ve ever laid in, and the most restful sleep I had had in years, and sometimes teary nighttime awakenings. some things can’t be helped…oh, the joys of travelling with flight Emirate is spectacular. A night between those bed-sheets really restores and rebalances you. I had excellent views directly facing the Mall of the Emirate and part of the pool below (if you stretched your neck). Everything in the room was spotlessly clean and looked brand new. The desk was comfortable for planning my daily routes on our my map.
Self Challenge in Thailand
January 04, 2019by: zhongxuan yang - ChinaProgram: Volunteer World: Best Volunteer Abroad Programs Worldwide
August 8th, 2018, I went to Thailand for the highest skydiving constitution in Asian. At the time, when I put on heavy equipment, I was super nervous, so I paid hundreds percent concentration on training. All set down, I followed the coach to get on the helicopter and had a big swallow before taking off. On the way to five thousand inches high, my hand still stuck the edge of seat tightly. It's the real time when I hardly moved right to the open door, my foot suspended in the midair and smash wind make me hard to breathe. Without struggle, I was pushed to jump with closing eyes and opening mouth. Actually, I screamed loudly but heard nothing. The parachute opened in seconds successfully and everything went as well as training. When I stood steadily on the cloud, I touched the soft clouds, astonished by the beautiful view of Phuket Island---golden-green fields are surrounded by the sea blue, trail of the train intersect through the landscape, cars running on the roads are as tiny as ants moving foods. Swinging back to the ground, I was so proud of myself and at the same time, I was so excited about the astonishing views in the sky.

A tremendously enriching experience!
February 27, 2018by: Sun - Dominican RepublicMy experience in Samana with Aldeas de Paz has definitely exceeded my expectations in a couple of different aspects. First, by working as a dental assistant through the dental care program, I was able to work with a dentist side by side, directly interact with patients, and closely observe the reality of dental care in a developing country. The Staff at the hospital including my dentist were very nice to me which made it easy to adapt and become part of the team. It had been a valuable experience that I wouldn’t be able to experience elsewhere. Next, I got to meet amazing people here – other volunteers. Open-minded people with great hearts come here to volunteer and it was great to spend time with them by working and traveling together, sharing stories and lives. I am blessed to have these friendships. Overall, it was a tremendously enriching experience!

Quality of culture
December 26, 2017by: Olatosu Gabriel - NigeriaProgram: Volunteer World: Best Volunteer Abroad Programs Worldwide
I'm Olatosu Gabriel, I was so touched when I travel to Tanzania, with a lots of unexpected surprises, really enjoyed my tour over there, especially in Zanzibar, their masquerades where so fine, they moved out with voodoo, flames of fire coming out of their head, women half naked dancing on their toe. Some strong men holding their masquerades that held cutlasses, I had a lot of time watching their festival, I enjoyed the way of their greetings, prostration and two hands on their head, I also visited a port, where I saw some animals, some that I have never seen in my life, also visited Kenya, I enjoyed their meal and their women so cheerful and lovely, most are black but beautiful, also visited Ghana in Accra, really enjoyed the cool place, with lots of fun, clubbing and enjoyed their women hospitality,. So amazing,...

Life changing experience
December 21, 2017by: Steffi - NetherlandsProgram: Volunteer World: Best Volunteer Abroad Programs Worldwide
The service was exceptional. I had many technical difficulties and someone was always there to help me out. Thank you so much! So easy to get in contact with organisations and tailor a search based on what my interests or travel requirements are for the experience. Love the range of filters and ease of contact and booking. I especially appreciated the transparent ethical guarantee on the website when looking at programs. Really great site! I've spent two weeks at a horse sanctuary and I had an amazing time! It is a nice project, you learn a lot about horsemanship and respect towards the horses.
It was an absolute blast!
February 16, 2017by: ThomasA few weeks from when I wrote this, I stepped on to a small budget airliner and made my way across the Caribbean to the Dominican Republic. Before this experience I had never left the United States, and I was unsure what my time in Samana would be like. Needless to say, it was an absolute blast. I volunteered in a small dental clinic in Las Pascualas, a small, sleepy city on the outskirts of Samana. Volunteering in the clinic opened my eyes to some of the difficulties associated with public health care in a developing country, and it allowed me to look at public service through a different perspective. The dentist I was under was very nice, and incredibly accomidating; an absolute joy to volunteer under. This trip also allowed me to meet people from around the globe, and develop friendships with people who I would have never come across in daily life. The other volunteers really helped make this trip worthwhile, and I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent with each one of them. Overall, Aldeas de Paz is a great organization to be apart of. The volunteers work hard to help the people of Samana, and the program director, Manfred, is very enabling. He will go out of his way to make sure you are getting the most out of your experience. I stayed in Samana for 28 days, and the time has honestly gone by very quickly. I have learned more than I had hoped to on this adventure, and I definitely recommend it to others.
An eye opening journey!
February 01, 2017by: Brandi - Santo DomingoI chose Aldeas de Paz as my first trip out of my home country the United States and I am so glad that I did. It was an eye opening journey that taught me a lot about the experiences of those living in a third world setting and a lot about myself as well. I worked in the dental clinic of the hospital in Samana. I was given the amazing opportunity to work as a dental assistant there within the first three days of my arrival which was more than I was expecting! Everything here is learned in a very hands on manner, so that even in just a month of being here I feel that I have learned and done so much! The staff of the hospital, and all the local people of Samana for that matter, were very patient with me and accepting as I don't speak very much Spanish. Having to adapt to the language and cultural differences only made the experience richer. The rest of the volunteers were also an enormous help in getting me comfortable in the new environment and seeing that leaving my comfort zone was the most valuable part of this journey. I will never forget the people I met here. I made friends from around the globe, and I will carry these friendships with me the same as my experiences in the Dominican Republic. Overall it was an amazing adventure and has only fueled my fire to experience more of the world! I would definitely recommend Aldeas de Paz to anyone looking for the same.
