Venture into a fabulous Dolphin and Marine Conservation project and help preserve the habitats of this species by monitoring tourist and human interaction. Nestled in Menai Bay, home to numerous sea creatures, including bottle-nose and humpback dolphins and whales, the area is popular with tourists from all over the world. The aim of this project is to ensure that there is sustainable dolphin tourism in the area, as it brings a good source of income to the local inhabitants but it is essential to ensure that the sea life is not put at risk. It also runs a resource centre which aims to educate locals and tourists about marine life. You don’t need specific technical skills to participate in this project. However, you should be able to swim as this is an important activity during research. Plus, you must be interested in marine wildlife and must love the outdoors. Cultural sensitivity is essential both at your placement and in your spare time. If you are a student and have specific course requirements, please speak to a Kaya Placement Advisor.

Experience hands-on field research related to the conservation of savannah ecosystems in the Kingdom of Eswatini (formerly called Swaziland). Although savannahs are well-represented in African conservation areas, they are subjected to increasing degradation as a result of human influences, including land use and climate change. Well known for large charismatic game such as elephants, rhinos, and lions, there are a variety of smaller species that are threatened and are arguably more critical to the functioning of savannahs. Depending on priorities and active studies at the time of participation, volunteers may study vegetation, bats, hyenas, small predators (like mongoose, genets, and jackal), rodents, ungulates (such as giraffe and antelope), reptiles, birds, and other plant and animal life in Eswatini’s Lubombo Conservancy. They will examine the interface among commercial agriculture, rural communities, and protected areas in this Southern African region and learn from our experienced conservationists. They will be based at our Savannah Research Centre and camp in the private Mbuluzi Game Reserve, working at the Mlawula Nature Reserve and Hlane Royal National Park located nearby.

Are you a dog lover? There are around 125 dogs at Susan and Hitoshi's private dog shelter in Tokushima, southern Japan, waiting to be walked by you one to three times a day! The dogs are temporarily placed at the facility with the aim of finding new owners for them. Their previous owners have either passed away or grown too old to take care of them. On the other hand, some are stray dogs collected from parks. The main activity at the shelter is walking the dogs. This is usually done in small groups of up to 10 dogs. Some dogs, however, need to be walked alone. This activity can be rather tiresome; you should be positive, motivated, and resilient. The dogs need walking every day regardless of the weather conditions. Long-term volunteers, especially those experienced in dog keeping, can help feed and clean the dogs as well as maintain their homes. To participate, you should bring Wellington boots, sturdy shoes, a rain jacket, a winter jacket (during winter), insect repellent, and clothes that may get dirty. You should also have been vaccinated against tetanus. Free accommodation will be provided to you by the project!
