The San Sebastian program opens an academic window on the Spanish and Basque people, introducing you to the rich diversity of Spain and offering a truly multicultural experience. San Sebastian has the highest level of bilingualism of any of the area's cities: all of its inhabitants speak Spanish, and one-third speak Basque. This program is ideal for students interested in Spanish or Basque Studies. Our intensive language approach allows you to complete up to two years of university language coursework in only one semester. The language courses can be complemented by our electives in related areas such as history, literature, culture, and art. Spend a semester or academic year in the modern and cosmopolitan city of Barcelona, Spain, with AIFS Abroad! You’ll earn up to 15 credits per semester studying at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF). Courses are taught in English or Spanish, with no previous Spanish language study required. There are many ways to make an impact within Barcelona’s local community. Once you’re abroad, volunteer opportunities will be available through local NGOs to provide services to people in need within the local community. Live in a Spanish homestay or, for an additional fee, in an apartment or student residence. Homestay students receive breakfast and dinner Monday through Friday from the family. Apartment and residence students have access to a shared kitchen. Cultural and social activities include guided tours of Barcelona and its famous landmarks and attractions, cooking classes, Flamenco performances, and tapas evenings with Spanish students. 3-day excursions to the Pyrenees (fall only) and Tarragona and Southern Catalonia (spring only) are included in the program fee, as well as day trips to Gerona and Besalú, Figueras and the Salvador Dalí Museum, and Montserrat and Sitges.

This program is perfect for students with intermediate-level or higher Spanish skills who seek an authentic and immersive experience. At the beginning of the semester, you can optionally take an intensive Spanish language course to help prepare you for the semester abroad. Seville, the capital of Andalusia and Spain’s 4th largest city, is between the Sierra Morena mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoying culture from the Romans, Visigoths, Muslims, Jews, and Christians throughout the ages and serving as the focal point of the Spanish Renaissance, the city is rich in history and tradition. When visiting Seville, you can experience the city as it was centuries ago. The lovely winding streets and active public squares of the Barrio Santa Cruz allow insight into the oldest portion of the city, and the list of monuments and historic sites is seemingly endless. The Tower of Gold once served as a landmark for arriving ships, and its Cathedral houses the tomb of Christopher Columbus. The 12th-century Moorish palace, the Alcázar, is the oldest palace fortress still used by European royalty. While studying, exploring the streets, visiting museums, or soaking up Spanish culture, API students in Seville gain a broad education in the Spanish language and civilization.

The Multidisciplinary Studies Program offers semester-long courses in either English or Spanish in business, communication, economics, history, political science, and many others. The courses offered only in English are computer science, biology, chemistry, psychology, and others. Spanish language courses are offered at six levels, including Spanish for the health professions, Business Spanish, Spanish conversation, Spanish phonetics, Spanish reading and composition, and Spanish/English translation courses. Our Spanish language classes have a class size range of 10 to 16 students, while all other classes have a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 24 students. Classes are held from Monday to Thursday and may occasionally have Friday activities. In addition, transcripts for completed courses are issued by Pablo de Olavide University. Students who score at the Advanced I level on their Spanish placement exam may enroll in up to two regular university courses. If the courses with the Spanish students are conducted in English, this language requirement is waived. Please note that a GPA of 2.75 or higher is required to participate in the program.
