Studying Finance Abroad

In the hyper-globalized state of today’s marketplace, finance is becoming, by nature, an international pursuit. New policies and technologies continue to break down economic borders, and successful interaction across cultures is increasingly important to work in the field. What better way to get your feet wet in the global economy than by studying finance abroad?

Why Study Finance Abroad

Studying finance abroad is the perfect first step toward a successful career in what is a powerfully competitive global field. The courses you enroll in, experiences you have, and connections you make will create a well-rounded experience that will bring your financial insight and global IQ to the next level. Not to mention, studying finance abroad will be plenty of fun away from the numbers too.

There are many considerations to take into place when deciding where to study finance abroad. Think about the quality of the program you are enrolling in, how effectively you will be able to navigate the language barrier, and additional opportunities that you’ll be able to pursue beyond the classroom, for starters.

Many students want to study finance abroad in the biggest and the best cities, in places like New York, London, Sydney, and Tokyo, where huge financial decisions are made everyday that shape the contours of the global marketplace. These cities undoubtedly offer some of the best opportunities to study finance abroad, and should be seriously considered by any finance student. Other major global cities in a similar vein include Paris, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.

You don’t have to study finance abroad in a huge economic hub to obtain a good financial education, however. Most universities around the world offer degrees in finance, meaning you can study abroad nearly anywhere that interests you and you will likely be able to take courses related to finance.

In the end, studying abroad is about much more than academics; it is the opportunity to travel outside of your comfort zone and expand your global perspective, so go somewhere that you know will challenge you!

Studying Finance Abroad

There are two main routes you can take when studying finance abroad, either enrolling in courses at a foreign university that can transfer back to your home university for academic credit or opting to participate in a study abroad program that is specifically built for finance students.

If you choose the former, there are many different organizations that arrange international student enrollment in foreign universities, which provide students with the chance to take a variety of finance courses abroad. However, keep in mind language barriers may prevent you from going this route in certain countries, that is if you are not adept in the local language. Some popular finance courses available through foreign universities include macroeconomics, international business practices, corporate finance, and business law.

Study abroad programs that are specifically designed for finance students are also a good option, as they will optimize every level of the experience toward your academic interests and introduce you to like-minded peers from around the globe. Finance study abroad programs tend to have more structured agendas and more limited course offerings than a traditional study abroad experience.

Go Global. Understanding the nuances of international finance is an incredibly complex undertaking, but one that can be aided by actually traveling to another country and experiencing firsthand a different economic environment.

Network. Studying abroad often leads to the forging of strong relationships, both personal and professional. You will make a great group of friends from around the world, and also have the opportunity to network with financial professionals, and possibly even future overseas employers.

Emerging Markets. Why not beat the rush by studying finance abroad in a country that is developing into a major economic power? Just imagine the potential benefits of living in a place like China for a year and learning Mandarin!
