Locations
The island nation of Dominica is located in the West Indies, where you’ll encounter ample plants, animal, and bird species among lush landscapes. With a blend of African, Caribbean, American, British, and French influences, you’ll discover a cultural mosaic here as well. We’ve searched high and low, and here are the best places to study abroad in Dominica.
Roseau. The capital and largest city of Dominica is located in the south on the western coast. Here you’ll ogle at French colonial architecture, extensive botanical gardens, and the Morne Trois Pitons National Park. The University of the West Indies is located in Roseau, which is open to majors from communications to human resources management. Be sure to enjoy natural hot water baths and the Boiling Lake after you ace your exams!
Portsmouth. You’ll find the second largest city of Dominica on the Indian River in the northwestern coast with less than 3,000 residents. Watch a cricket game at Benjamin's Park, visit the farmer’s market during the week, and snap pics of wetlands while you trek the area and coral reefs as you dive down under at Cabrits National Park. Don’t forget your studies, too.
Calibishie. This village town is located on the northern coast of Dominica with plenty of beaches to catch some rays or surf some waves. Even scenes from “Pirates of the Caribbean” were filmed here — so “island school” just got way cooler! From the rugged mountains to the bathing pools to the rainforests, students who love nature will want to visit this little piece of paradise. You might just even spot the Jaco parrot.
Subjects
Dominica may be a small island, but it offers great educational opportunities for international students. With five private universities and two public universities here, you’ll be able to take courses from liberal arts to the sciences as well. Here are the most popular subjects to study in Dominica.
If you are interested in studying biochemistry in Dominica, the Ross University School of Medicine accepts thousands of U.S. students every year for medical training at a fraction of the cost they’d pay in the U.S. You’ll gain clinical experience as you work under trained professionals and learn the foundation essentials.
Marine biology. Learn more about researching and exploring the depths of the underwater creatures below. You’ll learn more about oceans, the environment, and climate change along the way. The Dominica study abroad programs in biology will be hands-on as you collect data and learn practical skills involving sailing boats.
Some classes are taught in English and some in French, depending on the program. You’ll also hear some local languages like Creole (a mixture of Carib, French, and African languages) and Kokoy while an international student in Dominica.
Costs
Most program fees will cover the cost of tuition, housing, food, excursions, and support. They will expect you to pay for personal expenses and airfare. You can find a meal for about $8 and a beer that cost less than $2, but transportation such as taxi fares and gas will be a little more than you’d expect.
Tuition and fees at many of the universities in Dominica are affordable — a fraction of what you’d pay in the United States, Canada, or Europe. To help cover your program costs, consider applying for scholarships and starting a fundraising campaign.
Housing
Where you’ll be staying in Dominica depends upon the program. In most cases, you’ll be resting your head at night in a student dormitory on campus that is similar to an apartment. You could also look into staying at an apartment off campus; rents can be anywhere between $300 to $700 depending on the number of rooms and distance from the city center. You could also look into staying with a host family for a more immersive experience.
Student Visas
The visa requirements depend on your citizenship and length of stay. If you’re studying in Dominica for less than six months, you won’t need a visa. However, if you’re studying in Dominica for longer than six months, you’ll need to apply for a student visa. Applying for a student visa in Dominica involves a valid passport, financial proof, admission letter, police record, and medical report with an HIV/AIDs test. Check with your study abroad Dominica coordinator and GoAbroad’s Embassy Directory for more assistance.
