Seamester Study Abroad and Gap Year Voyages

Seamester is the educational adventure of a lifetime! For more than 40 years, we have offered unparalleled educational voyages where students spend a semester at sea sailing between islands, countries, and even continents. We design our programs to provide engaging learning experiences with real outcomes in ways that are impossible to replicate in the traditional classroom. Living as part of a close-knit team on an ocean-going vessel, our students learn fundamental lessons beyond academics: teamwork, leadership, and personal responsibility. They receive academic credit from the University of South Florida, along with PADI scuba certifications and IYT sailing certifications. Our programs are designed to inspire students to realize that it’s the journey, not the destination, that matters the most.

A Guide to Studying Abroad in the British Virgin Islands

Locations

The British Virgin Islands consist of an archipelago of sixty Caribbean islands. The several largest of these are home to the majority of the territory’s 28,000 citizens, living in small towns and villages, while most of the smaller islands sprawled across the seascape remain uninhabited. The British Virgin Islands lay just a few miles due east of the US Virgin Islands and are bordered to the north by the Atlantic ocean.

The largest of the British Virgin Islands is Tortola, which is only 12 miles long and 3 miles wide. Tortola is home to over 80% of the local population, making it by far the most popular destination where to study abroad in the British Virgin Islands. Road Town, the capital and largest settlement in the territories, is also located on Tortola. H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, the country’s sole institution of higher education, is situated on the main island as well.

Other destinations where you can potentially study abroad in the British Virgin Islands include the other “major” islands of Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Anegada. These islands all have very small populations, but nevertheless feature opportunities to study abroad within a variety of specialty programs.

Being on Seamester was such an amazing experience in so many ways. From learning how to scuba dive to being completely under sail for the first time, I was able to learn so many new things and fall in love with boat life. The community was one of the best parts of the trip. Since we all are with each other pretty much 24/7 it’s easy to create really close relationships. Overall, the trip was amazing, the only thing I wish that was different was that I chose a longer trip
