What inspired you to travel to Dominica?

The decision to travel abroad to Dominica is deeply rooted in my aspiration to embrace broader experiences and pursue unique study opportunities.

Traveling to a new country provides an unparalleled chance to immerse myself in a different culture, gain fresh perspectives, and develop skills beyond academics. Dominica’s vibrant environment and rich history offer the perfect backdrop for personal and professional growth. This journey represents more than just an educational endeavor; it is a step toward understanding the world through diverse lenses and building connections that will shape my future in profound ways.

Why did you choose Therapy Abroad?

I chose Therapy Abroad Inc. because of its commitment to providing immersive, hands-on learning experiences in unique cultural settings. Their programs allow me to combine professional development with personal growth, enhancing my skills in a real-world context while engaging with diverse communities. The organization’s emphasis on collaboration, cultural exchange, and impactful learning aligns perfectly with my goal of expanding my knowledge and gaining meaningful international experience.

What was your favorite part about Dominica?

My favorite part of Dominica is its breathtaking natural beauty. The island is often called the “Nature Isle” for a reason—lush rainforests, pristine waterfalls, and vibrant marine life. I particularly enjoyed exploring the hot springs and hiking trails that showcase the country’s unique volcanic landscape. The warmth and friendliness of the local community made the experience even more special, creating a perfect blend of adventure and cultural immersion.

What made your experience abroad extraordinary?

What made my experience in Dominica extraordinary was the combination of natural beauty, hands-on learning, and cultural immersion. Being able to study and apply my knowledge in such a stunning environment, surrounded by lush rainforests and vibrant communities, created a unique and enriching experience. The connections I built with both locals and fellow participants added depth to my journey, making every moment meaningful. The island’s tranquility and the warmth of its people truly made this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?

The local staff supported me throughout my Speech-Language Pathology program in Dominica by providing guidance, encouragement, and a wealth of knowledge about the country and my fieldwork. They ensured I felt comfortable and prepared, offering valuable insights that enriched my learning experience. Their accessibility and willingness to address any challenges made the transition smooth and stress-free. Their passion for their work and the local culture inspired me to fully engage in the program, making my experience even more rewarding.

What's one thing you wish you had done differently during your time abroad?

I wish I had taken more time to explore the local culture and traditions outside of my program activities. While I gained so much from the structured experiences, I feel I missed some opportunities to connect more deeply with the local community by participating in cultural events or learning more about Dominica’s history. I also wish I had planned better for downtime to fully soak in the island’s natural beauty and reflect on my journey.

Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.

A typical day during the program in Dominica was a perfect balance of work and play. Mornings were usually dedicated to hands-on learning experiences, wherein I worked alongside local staff and fellow participants on therapeutic activities or community projects. These sessions were both challenging and rewarding, allowing me to apply my knowledge in real-world settings while making a tangible impact.

Afternoons often included exploring the island’s natural beauty, such as hiking lush trails, visiting waterfalls, or snorkeling in vibrant coral reefs. Evenings were a time for reflection, sharing stories with others, or enjoying the local cuisine and culture.

Each day was a blend of meaningful work and unforgettable adventures, making the experience both productive and enriching.

What did you enjoy doing during your free time in Dominica?

I really enjoyed the freedom to explore Dominica’s natural beauty during my free time. Whether hiking through the rainforest, relaxing by the hot springs, or swimming in crystal-clear waters, I could unwind and connect with the island’s serene environment. I also appreciated the opportunity to interact with locals, learn about their traditions, and experience the warmth of the community.

This balance of relaxation and cultural immersion made my free time incredibly rewarding. It allowed me to recharge while making lasting memories.

What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?

The accommodations at the hurricane shelter in Castle Bruce were simple yet functional, providing a safe and community-oriented environment. I appreciated the sense of resilience and camaraderie among the people there, as the shelter served as a place of refuge and a hub for local support. The practical setup included basic amenities, which helped me focus on my work while still feeling comfortable.

I liked how the shelter was close to nature, with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. It was a unique experience that allowed me to connect with the local community in an authentic and meaningful way.

What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before they travel?

Before going on the trip to Dominica, people should know it’s essential to be adaptable and open-minded. The island’s infrastructure may not always be as developed as in more tourist-centric locations, but this adds to the authenticity of the experience. It’s important to embrace the slower pace of life and be prepared for variable weather conditions, especially in more remote areas. Additionally, respecting local customs and traditions will help foster meaningful interactions with the community. Lastly, packing light and being ready for outdoor activities, like hiking or swimming, is key to fully enjoying the island’s natural beauty.

Would you recommend Therapy Abroad to others? Why?

Yes, I would definitely recommend Therapy Abroad Inc. to others. Their program in Dominica offers a unique and enriching experience that combines professional development with personal growth. The opportunity to work in an immersive, culturally diverse environment is invaluable, and the support from Therapy Abroad and its local staff is exceptional. It’s perfect for anyone looking to expand their knowledge, gain hands-on experience, and engage with a vibrant community while exploring a beautiful country like Dominica.

What do you feel is the most significant benefit of traveling abroad?

The most significant benefit of traveling to Dominica is the opportunity for personal and professional growth through cultural immersion. It broadens my perspectives, allowing me to experience different ways of life, values, and worldviews that I wouldn’t encounter in my home country. This exposure not only enhances my adaptability and problem-solving skills but also deepens my understanding of global issues, making me more empathetic and open-minded. Traveling abroad pushes me outside my comfort zone, helping me develop a greater sense of independence and confidence, all while creating lasting memories and connections.

Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?

My time abroad has had a profound impact on my life, shaping my personal and professional growth. It has broadened my perspective, helping me better understand and appreciate diverse cultures, which has deepened my empathy and made me more adaptable. The hands-on learning and real-world experiences have enhanced my skills, making me more confident and capable in my field. Additionally, the connections I’ve made with people from different backgrounds have expanded my network and provided valuable insights that I can apply in my studies and future career. Overall, my time abroad has instilled a sense of adventure, curiosity, and a greater appreciation for the world around me.

What does meaningful travel mean to you?

To me, meaningful travel means experiencing a destination in a way that goes beyond just sightseeing. It’s about immersing myself in the local culture, building genuine connections with the people, and learning from the environment and community. It’s not just about ticking off tourist spots but about engaging with the place in a deeper, more impactful way—whether through volunteering, studying, or contributing to local initiatives.

Meaningful travel enriches my understanding of the world, challenges my perspectives, and leaves me with experiences that stay long after the trip.
